The 2017 Oriental Institute Gala
Celebrating 98 years of dedication to research, discovery, and cultural heritage preservation of the ancient Near East.
The Oriental Institute is pleased to present the 2017 James Henry Breasted Medallion to Misty and Lewis Gruber. Named in honor of the Oriental Institute’s visionary founder, the Breasted Medallion honors dedicated volunteer commitment to and philanthropic generosity on behalf of the Oriental Institute.
As members of the Oriental Institute Visiting Committee for 13 years, the Grubers have been committed to supporting the Institute’s efforts to study past civilizations for the benefit of future scholars and citizens. They were the driving force behind creating a Memorandum of Understanding with the Field Museum, which allows the two institutions to share resources. The Grubers fully funded an innovative program for the digitization of all Oriental Institute publications, providing online access to these materials for scholars and enthusiasts of the ancient Middle East all over the
world. This effort has had particular significance in the countries where the Institute conducts field research. So far, more than 100,000 electronic publications have been downloaded through the OI’s website—a free service that has led to increased revenues from our print publications. Most recently, the Grubers have been instrumental in introducing the Oriental Institute to new supporters.
Ancient civilizations are a passion for the Grubers, who support the preservation of the ancient city of Antinoupolis in Egypt through the Antinoupolis Foundation, which is led by James B. Heidel, an architect and epigraphic artist on the Oriental Institute’s Epigraphic Survey expedition in Luxor, Egypt. Lewis also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Field Museum, and Misty is a former member of the board of the Leakey Foundation (now serving as a Leakey Foundation advisor) and of the board of the American Research Center in Egypt.
