Rent parties originated in 1920’s Harlem in the heart of New York City. Tenants hired a musician or band to play for the neighborhood or building and then passed the hat to raise money for their rent.

Community LINC’s signature fundraising event takes inspiration from these rent parties in gathering our community to spread hope and opportunity to those in the midst of difficulty. We congregate at The Rent Party to celebrate life in the heart of our city and “pay the rent” for the families we serve as they transition from homelessness into self-sufficiency. Thank you for being a Silver Lining and helping us end homelessness and transform lives!

The Karen and Hank Herrmann Humanitarian Award, recognizing the Herrmann’s unparalleled legacy of selfless and generous support for families impacted by poverty

and homelessness, is presented this evening with love and appreciation to Linda and David Gentile who have demonstrated extraordinary compassion for homeless families working towards self-sufficiency.

About Karen and Hank Herrmann

Karen and Hank Herrmann came to Kansas City in 1971 from New York, where Hank started his career as an investment analyst on Wall Street. He moved here to join Waddell & Reed where he became CEO in 2005 and Chairmen in 2010, and is currently one of the firm’s longest tenured leaders. Hank sets a standard centered on giving back because he believes that investing in the communities that a company serves is not only good business, but is the way to provide a ray of hope and encouragement amidst the cloud of difficulty that often surrounds us. He and Karen volunteer their personal time and resources, which fosters an environment among their friends, family, peers, and associates where volunteerism and philanthropy have become second nature.

Under Hank’s leadership, Waddell & Reed and Ivy Funds have consistently provided a Silver Lining to community, cultural and charitable causes in the Kansas City area and nationwide. His strong encouragement to serve on boards and to contribute to local organizations has caused a greater philanthropic effort resulting in a brighter future for many in and around Kansas City. The Herrmanns set high expectations for themselves, their family and friends, and their associates at Waddell & Reed. They view giving back as a privilege and find reward in their ability to be a Silver Lining in the lives of so many.

2013 Karen and Hank Herrmann Humanitarian Award

2013 Recipients Linda and David Gentile

The 2013 Karen and Hank Herrmann Humanitarian Award is presented to Linda and David Gentile.

As the President and Chief Executive Officer of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC) since December 1, 2010, David has elevated Blue KC’s role as the area’s leading health insurer to provide affordable access to healthcare and to improve the health and wellness of its members. David has been the company’s key executive responsible for coordinating Blue KC’s strategic planning activities to date including transforming the company into the area’s leading wellness enterprise. Under his leadership, Blue KC has embarked on multiple community sponsored wellness initiatives while

continuing to offer state of the art health insurance products in the market. Under his helm, Blue KC has received the J.D. Power and Associates “Highest Member Satisfaction” distinction in both 2012 and 2013, Ingram’s 2012 “Best Companies to Work For” designation and has been awarded the ArtsKC Award on four occasions.

Together, David and Linda continue to work tirelessly to provide Silver Linings for the Kansas City community. David and Linda serve numerous civic organizations, including the Mid-America Coalition on Health Care; Ronald McDonald House; Junior Achievement of Middle America; Third and Long Foundation; Horizon Academy; Union Station; Kansas City Area Development Corporation; Kansas City Chamber of Commerce; Kansas City Civic Council; the USOC governing entity of USA Volleyball; Kansas City Young Matrons and Friendship Inn.

Tonight it is our privilege and honor to celebrate David and Linda for the tremendous work they put forth to make Kansas City a better place. They truly embody what it means to foster an environment in which volunteerism and philanthropy have become second nature. Congratulations and a heartfelt thank-you to David and Linda Gentile!

For 25 years, Community LINC has been uniquely successful in helping families end homelessness and maintain their hard-won independence permanently.

Our dream is to impact poverty and break the cycle of homelessness for Children and their parent’s..

With your help, we are providing a Silver Lining to repair the damage, both physical and emotional, from homelessness.

25 years of ending homelessness and transforming lives

Mission: Community

LINC’s mission is to end

homelessness, impact

poverty and remove

barriers to self-sufficiency

for the families we serve.

The Community LINC Story Community LINC – A Model That

Works• A five year study shows that 80% of

the families who left for permanent housing between 2007 and 2011 did not become homeless again.

Why We’re Successful: • Housing Placement (and indirectly

Employment Services) ends homelessness by convincing landlords to take a risk on our families.

• In 2013 78% of the families exiting Community LINC have found a home.

• Employment Services impacts poverty by equipping clients to find and keep a job.

• Budgeting & Financial Education shows parents how to manage money, often for the first time.

• Family Coaching (Case Management), Aftercare, Mental Wellness Counseling & Healthy Lifestyles, and Lifeskills classes remove barriers to self-sufficiency.

• Children’s Lifeskills, academic assistance, Mental Wellness Counseling and a Wellness Clinic reduce the damage of homelessness and awaken children to new life options.

Why We Excel:Data collection and analysis drive continuous program improvement. Our program design follows proven, evidence-based models.

Why “A Hand Up” Is a Greater Gift Than a “Hand Out”:Parents find jobs and become taxpayers• Taxable income increases – by $4M

dollars for all families who have exited since 2007.

• Dependence on public assistance declines – by $1M for those who exited since 2007.

Families don’t become homeless again• 8 out of 10 families who left from

2007–2011 did not become homeless again.

Facts About Homelessness:• Families are the fastest growing

segment of the homeless nationwide.

• Many people in the U.S. are three paychecks away from becoming homeless!

• The average wait time for subsidized housing is at least three years.

• Jobs that pay well remain scarce and the clients we serve have fewer skills.

• The poverty rate in the United States is the highest since 1993.

The Rent Party Steering Committee LeCretia’s Story

The year was 2000 and LeCretia Morrison was about to enter her first year of high school. Like most teenagers, she was very excited but apprehensive. She had attended school in her neighborhood for years – and had friends there as well as a sense of belonging. She couldn’t know it as high school began that September morning, but that year – she and her family would become homeless.

As a single mother, LeCretia’s Mom was a superstar, always keeping LeCretia safe and fed and sheltered. But when they lost their home, there was no way for this fragile little family to stay together and circumstances forced them to live apart. Freshman year is supposed to be exciting. It’s a time of self-discovery, of learning, of finding your footing as you move into early adulthood. But freshman year for LeCretia was one of loss, sadness and often times fear. She lost her room, her neighborhood, but most importantly – her mother was no longer by her side.

Had it not been for Community LINC, no one knows what would have happened to this young family. But when they rejoined in a temporary home, LeCretia found herself marveling at all the family was learning. Her mother’s mentors and especially her budgeter, Joni, was literally changing the course of this family’s life. They learned how to create a structure for money management and other life skills that left LeCretia hopeful about her future. She was even more inspired by her amazing mother, who not only worked every job she could, but enrolled in nursing school to finish her degree.

After high school, LeCretia followed in her mother’s footsteps, enrolling in college and graduating with a Masters in Architecture in 2009. Today she is working on her second Masters, and in her spare time – loves to help kids, just like the good people from Community LINC helped her.

Nothing speaks better to LeCretia’s Community LINC story than these words from her: “Community LINC changed my life, no doubt about it. Not only did they teach me practical skills, but they gave me back my family and together, we’ve made a wonderful new home. I wish all the people who have donated to Community LINC could hear my story. They are doing more than impacting poverty and ending homelessness ... they are reuniting families and building tomorrows. May God bless them all.”
