The Year of Change

Letter from thePresident

Brett Esrock,President and CEO

We’ve all been through a lot this past fiscal year. The deployment of Symphony created more change in a shorter period of time than I’m sure most of us may have ever experienced. After 29 years, we experienced a change in our organization’s leadership. Along with the other Health Ministries of Ascension Health, we experienced restructuring of our organization in order to proactively address a challenging healthcare environment. These are big changes for any organization to face, but the reality is that growth cannot occur without change, and Providence’s commitment to growth has primed us for a strong future in the evolution of healthcare.

In addition to these changes, it’s important to note that healthcare delivery is changing as well. While Providence is seeing more patients than ever before, they are coming to us in different ways. While inpatient care will always be an essential part of our continuum of care, we are seeing a statistically significant shift in the increased utilization of outpatient services. Because of our commitment to growth, we are embracing more efficient and sustainable ways of serving our patients and their changing healthcare needs, including adopting new technology, building a larger foundation of primary care and adapting toward this rapid trend of greater outpatient care needs.

Many of the changes in the past year represent positive growth. We added new service lines that have enabled Central Texans to seek the latest advancements in care, close to home. These service lines include a revolutionary severe asthma treatment, Bronchial Thermoplasty, which helps improve asthma control and asthma-related quality of life for adults who suffer from severe asthma. In addition, the Providence Robotic Surgery Institute has the only da Vinci® Si™ robotic surgery system in Central Texas, and provides a minimally-invasive surgery option for patients seeking potentially shorter recovery times. Since performing the first da Vinci® Si™ robotic surgery on January 14, 2013, da Vinci-trained surgeons have performed over 175 robotic surgeries at Providence. The Providence Sleep Center, a sleep study lab focused on convenience and comfort, opened on March 11, 2013 and is already expanding from four rooms to six in order to meet demand.

To expand our primary care footprint, six new Physicians and Nurse Practitioners, representing a 30% increase in our primary care base, will join Providence in the next three months. Please join me in welcoming them to the Providence team.

Embracing and adapting to change requires effective teamwork. Not only is this a time of change and growth for Providence, but it is a time of change and growth for us all. Ultimately, I am proud of our ability as an organization to accept and adapt to both difficult and positive changes. Moving forward, we have to continue to work together to embrace change, understanding that the way we think about and address challenges will require new ideas and methods. Thank you for continuing to exemplify our Core Values of integrity, wisdom, creativity and dedication as we evolve to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future.

Thank you to the following who have been instrumental leaders in the ministry of the Providence Foundation.

Providence Foundation Celebrates 20 Years

This year, as the Providence Foundation celebrates its 20th year, we also celebrate 20 years of philanthropic support from the community. Such philanthropy has allowed the Providence Foundation to remain committed to the Daughters of Charity’s tradition of healing for the sick, poor and vulnerable.

Rewind 30 years….to the mid 1980’s: In 1984, Kent Keahey had been named as Providence’s first lay CEO, and the successful capital campaign for Providence’s relocation to Highway 6 was complete by 1989. In the midst of economic downturn, several members of the Board of Trustees, together with John Sheehy, Terry Stevens and Kent Keahey, discussed the future need for vital medical equipment. Board member Terry Stevens recalls a defining moment: Terry commented,

“Wouldn’t it have been nice had someone started a foundation 20 years ago so that we would not have to worry about a capital spending hold caused by the ebb and flow of the current economy?”

John [Sheehy] leaned forward and said, “Terry! Let’s be sure that people don’t say that about us 20 years from now!”

From that moment, an 18 month process began to secure the 501(c)3 nonprofit charter. And in 1993, the Providence Foundation was established. Due to the commitment of the initial Foundation Board, the faithfulness of our generous donors, and above all, the favor and grace of our Lord, the Providence Foundation has experienced tremendous success.

To date, the Foundation has granted a total of over $20 million, and funds major capital projects including the establishment of the Providence Park endowment fund, the renovation of our two heart cath labs, the Geriatric Unit at DePaul, the Providence Joint Camp, the Providence Breast Health Center, the F.M. and Gloria Young Tower, and most recently, the Bill and Patricia Watson Women and Newborns Center—all debt free construction projects made possible by capital reserves and generous donations from our community. Furthermore, the Foundation has granted over $6 million to our ministry to support the medical services provided by our dedicated physicians, nurses and healthcare professionals. (See the most recent grants awarded below)

“It is fun to accomplish things together, for the benefit of the patients we serve. We have been blessed with success. All the success that we are enjoying now stems from Terry, John and Kent. We are standing on their shoulders,” Dave Guyer, Vice President of Development and Executive Director of the Providence Foundation, said.

Fast forward 30 years… What does current Chairman of the Providence Foundation Board Scott Felton see for the future?

“I want us to continue to be forward-thinkers. We were on the cutting edge 20 years ago and I want us to never get behind. In the midst of an ever-changing financial landscape, we will continue to position ourselves to help Providence meet the needs of our patients, and continue to provide quality care that people trust,” Scott said.

During the spring grant ceremony held in May, the Providence Foundation presented 11 “big” checks to various Providence departments totaling $282,783. This is the most checks the

Foundation has presented in any one grant funding cycle, and this is the most money the Foundation has ever granted out in any one grant funding cycle.

Foundation Awards Eleven Grants During the Spring Ceremony

Our state of the art da Vinci Robot uses a single site surgical procedure with a tiny incision placed inside the patient’s belly button. During robotic surgery, our surgeons sit at a console and operate small hand-controlled devises to manipulate robotic arms controlling the surgical instruments and 3D, high def. camera. Benefits to the patient include minimal pain, low blood loss, short hospital stay and high patient satisfaction. The Providence Foundation is pleased to present Judy Taylor, Director of Surgical Services and Bob Buck with a check for $76,785 for the purchase of two Intuitive da Vinci SI 8.5 Endoscopes.

The Hug-U-Vac Positioner has a unique, pliable design that enables it to inflate and deflate evenly and to fit any patient’s body shape or size. This will ensure proper patient positioning during surgeries using the da Vinci Robot. The Providence Foundation is pleased to present Judy Taylor and Bob Buck with a check for $7,593 for the purchase of an Allen Medical Hug-U-Vac Positioner.

Our Providence pharmacy uses the Talyest Carousel, a highly automated machine that uses barcode scanning, to dispense medications to our patients. A new version of the software will enhance its capability to improve patient safety by reducing medication errors. The Providence Foundation is pleased to present a check to Kurt Kurtz, Director of the Pharmacy and Bob Buck, Vice President of Clinical and Support Services with a check for $50,000 for the purchase of the software upgrade for the Talyst Carousel.

4 • The Spirit of Providence The Joy of Vatican II

The other day I was reading the news about our new pope, Francis. People were comparing him to John XXIII, the pope who called the Vatican Council in 1959! Oh, well do I remember it! It was

a great time, exciting—full of hope and promise, as we were invited to open the windows of the Church and let the fresh air in.

Now just us “old folks” experienced the excitement of realizing that “the Church was ours!”

Since so many of you are too young to remember, I think there is some of this anticipation in the air from the minute Francis came out without “the red shoes” and then took the bus back to his hotel! He’s just like us.

In the Vatican, the popes live in a quiet and elegant apartment—away from everyone—they have special rooms, special everything. Instead, Francis moved to Santa Marta which is a hotel for visitors, run by the Daughters of Charity. (You’ve heard of them, right?!)

So, since his daily Mass is open to anyone who comes around, many of his homilies (comments on scripture) are on the internet.

I’ll share two comments that I think apply to us: He said we should avoid being lax (loosey goosey) Christians, but more so—don’t be rigid Christians, worrying about how everyone else is keeping the rules. Instead, he said, a good Christian is not rigid prune-faced, but rather one who is smiling, happy to know that we are loved by God!

And our ministry calls us to this, each and every day. When we think about our privilege to serve God in the sick and to find Him in the poor, we can’t help but smile.

So let’s join Francis in showing all who come to us for care at Providence that we are people who know we are loved by God and bring that love to them. “Ad Multos Annos”, Francis “Ad Multos Annos” to all of us!

See you around,

Sister CP.S. Call me @ ext. 4763 if you know what “ad multos annos” means—oh, and feel free to call me even if you don’t!

The Spirit of Providence • 5Providence Park Celebrates 10 YearsThis past May, Providence Park celebrated 10 years of excellent, compassionate care with two anniversary celebrations. Over 320 St. Elizabeth Place, The Village and St. Catherine Center residents, their families and Providence Park caregivers gathered for food, music and dancing on May 17 and May 30. Both events featured musical guest, The Morticians, and a special blessing. A special thanks was offered to the residents who have called Providence Park “home” since its start in 2003. Waco City Councilman John Kinnaird read proclamations declaring May “Providence Park Month” in the city of Waco in acknowledgement of the excellent care Providence Park has provided to the seniors of Central Texas.

“I can still vividly recall the groundbreaking for Providence Park in 2001. At the groundbreaking ceremony our first Administrator, Mike Sims, pointed out that Providence Park would have something that no other senior living community in Waco would have—the heritage and the legacy of two great organizations. CHRISTUS The Regis/St. Elizabeth provided senior living and care in downtown Waco for 40 years, from 1963 to 2003. The Providence Healthcare Network has served Waco for more than 100 years. So when Providence Park began we were blessed by God with a foundation, a legacy, of nearly 140 combined years of caring in Catholic healthcare. I could not be more proud, that together, we have added another 10 years of caring service to that legacy. And I could not be more proud of my association with Providence Park, and all the men and women who serve out their calling here, and the men and women who call Providence Park home. This month we celebrate 10 great years, and with God’s blessing, we look forward to many great years to come.”

From the desk of Michael Olmstead, Vice President of Long Term Care Services:

Medicare fraud and abuse is a serious problem requiring your attention. Although there is no precise measure of health care fraud and the majority of health care providers are honest and well-intentioned, a minority of providers who are intent on abusing the system can cost taxpayers billions of dollars and put beneficiaries’ health and welfare at risk. The impact of these losses and risks is magnified by the growing number of people served by Medicare and the increased strain on Federal and state budgets.

You play a vital role in protecting the integrity of the Medicare Program. To combat fraud and abuse, you need to know what to watch for to protect our organization from potential abusive practices, civil liability, and perhaps criminal activity. This fact sheet gives you some of the tools you need to protect the Medicare Program, including the definitions of Medicare fraud and abuse, laws used to address fraud and abuse, overviews of partnerships among government agencies engaged in fighting fraud and abuse, and resources on how you can report suspected fraud and abuse.

What Is Medicare Fraud?

In general, fraud is defined as making false statements or representations of material facts to obtain some benefit or payment for which no entitlement would otherwise exist. These acts may be committed either for the person’s own benefit or for the benefit of some other party. In other words, fraud includes the obtaining of something of value through misrepresentation or concealment of material facts.

Fraud schemes range from solo to broad-based operations by an institution or group. Anyone can commit health care fraud. You may even know someone who has committed fraud. Organized crime also is infiltrating the Medicare Program and masquerading as Medicare providers and suppliers. Examples of Medicare fraud may include:

Knowingly billing for services that were not furnished and/or supplies not provided, including billing Medicare for appointments that the patient failed to keep; and

Knowingly altering claims forms and/or receipts to receive a higher payment amount.

It is a crime to defraud the Federal Government and its programs. Punishment may involve imprisonment, significant fines, or both. Criminal penalties for health care fraud reflect the serious harms associated with health care fraud and the need for aggressive and appropriate fraud prevention. In some states, providers and health care organizations may lose their licenses. Convictions also may result in exclusion from Medicare participation for a specified length of time. Medicare fraud may also result in civil liability.

6 • The Spirit of Providence

__Therefore put on the full armor of God… Stand firm then, with the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. —Eph 6:13-17

This passage comes from a story about men who were rebuilding a wall and they were under constant threat of attack. This scripture says that they kept their weapons with them even when they were doing something as mundane as going to get water. This really made me

think, at the times in my life that I have felt overwhelmed, I don’t think I have always been prepared in that way. Many of us do not walk around with physical weapons. None of us that work at the hospital really come to work with swords and shields...but we are able to build up our protection in a spiritual sense. To make ourselves more prepared for when the attacks come in our lives.

There is a list of the spiritual armor of God in Ephesians 6; belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, readiness from the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, sword of the spirit (the Bible). At the end of this list the passage says “With this in mind, be alert and keep praying...” The times may come when you feel like everything that you have is being broken down. The foundation of the things that you know will be shaken. If you are not prepared for that, if you do not have your weapons with you when you go for water, you may succumb to the pressures. Great warriors do not ready themselves for a battle mid-fight. They hone their skills for years. They practice their skills repeatedly. They study long hours together, and they also practice alone and in secret. They get up early and stay up late, to be sure that they are the best at what they do.

God isn’t going to ask all of us to rebuild great walls. He’s not even going to ask all of us to carry literal swords and shields and fight real physical battles. Sometimes he is going to ask the person next to you to build a wall, and they might need your shield or your belt and wouldn’t it be great if you had it ready to give? There is so much to be said for being prepared.

“Neither I nor my brothers nor my men nor the guards with me took off our clothes; each had his weapon, even when he went for water.” (Nehemiah 4:23)

by Chaplain Shannon Eckley

Most of us experience some form of stress in each and every day. Whether it is related to work, family or extra-curricular activities, stress can creep into our lives in many different ways. Sometimes

we aren’t even aware of the amount of stress we carry, which can be overwhelming. Research has scientifically proven that meditation is a safe and simple way to balance your physical, emotional, and mental state and its countless values have been known and practiced for thousands of years.

Some of the benefits of meditation include:

w Reduces anxiety attacks as it lowers the levels of blood lactate

w Builds self-confidence

w Increases serotonin which influences moods and behavior: Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression, headaches, and insomnia

w Enhances energy, strength and vigor

Most of the stretchers in our Emergency Department are not safe for morbidly obese patients. The Providence Foundation is pleased to present Bob Buck with a check for $13,678.36 for the purchase of two new stretchers which are safe for patients who weigh up to 700 pounds.

The Previ Color Gram Stainer automates the gram stain process which quickly recognizes and identifies bacteria specimens, allowing physicians to make informed diagnostic and therapeutic decisions for patients in their care. The Providence Foundation is pleased to present Linda Erlanson, Director of the Laboratory and Bob Buck with a check for $12,134 for the purchase of a Previ Color Gram Stainer.

St. Catherine Center Rehabilitative Services at Providence Park is dedicated to helping more than 800 patients a year regain independent mobility. That includes being able to step over a curb, walking up a ramp, or walking across any number of uneven surfaces such as grass, sand or gravel. The Providence Foundation is pleased to present Amanda Sonnier, Assistant Administrator of Providence Park with a check for $17,100 for the construction of an outdoor mobility courtyard at Providence Park.

Many of the approximately 200 residents at Providence Park’s St. Catherine Center require a great deal of care as they recover from illness or injury. Others need comforting during their final stage of life. The Providence Foundation is pleased to present Tiffany Tighshoo, Director of Providence Park’s St. Catherine Sub Acute Unit and Amanda Sonnier with a check for $46,920 for the purchase 24 fold out sleeper sofas so that family members and other non-Providence caregivers may stay with their loved ones.

Traditional wheelchairs are not comfortable or safe for patients who are obese. The Providence Foundation is pleased to present a check for $7,583 to Donna Parker, Nurse Manager of the CHF Clinic, Debbie Kucera, Director of Cardiology and Bob Buck for the purchase of a PEV 2000 Power Bariatric Wheelchair to ensure comfort and safety for obese CHF patients when transported throughout the hospital.

Patients who suffer from, or are at risk for, cardiac arrhythmia are closely watched by our nurses with the aid of a cardiac telemetry monitor. By upgrading our telemetry monitoring system, nurses can review the history of our patients’ arrhythmias so that they can provide our cardiologists with additional information to administer appropriate arrhythmia treatment. The Providence Foundation is pleased to present a check for $5,712 to Donna Parker, Debbie Kucera and Bob Buck for the purchase of an upgrade to our current GE Medical Cardiac Telemetry Monitory System.

Sleep studies can help in diagnosing and treating disorders such as narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, depression, ADHD/ADD, enlarged tonsils and complications from stroke or congestive heart failure. Our new Providence Sleep Center opened with four bedrooms, with two additional rooms available to expand into. Demand has been almost overwhelming and there is a need to immediately open the other two bedrooms. The Providence Foundation is pleased to present a check for $31,772 to Kim Shaw, Providence Sleep Center Manager, Bob Buck and Dr. Alan Little, Providence Sleep Center Medical Director, for the purchase of two Cadwell Easy III Sleep Study Systems.

Dash monitors allow our pediatric nurses to monitor our little patients’ real-time oxygen saturations, heart rates and blood pressures. Real-time monitoring of pediatric patients is critical because their health conditions can deteriorate more quickly than other patients. The Providence Foundation is pleased to present a check for $40,688 to Alicia Urbanovsky, Nurse Manager of Providence Health Center’s 3 South Floor, and Bob Buck for the purchase of four Dash monitors.

Like Providence Health Center, most palliative care programs offer consultative services in the hospital setting. In order to offer chronically or terminally ill patients a complete continuum of

care, programs are starting to expand into assisted living facilities, skilled nursing facilities, and in-home settings. With the collaborative efforts of Providence Palliative Care program and Pathways program we have been successful in providing palliative care services in all of these settings. The Palliative Care program is now part of the case management team and works closely with them to ensure that patients have the resources they need when discharged. Patients with chronic or life-limiting illness need a continuum of care with resources available to help navigate “roadblocks” that may arise after discharge. This is where Pathways, a social work based program, can help fill the gap. The Pathways facilitator and Palliative Care coordinator meet once a week to discuss any issues that might arise for these patients and their families. They can also provide home visits, support, resources and encouragement to help keep patients accountable and on track to accomplish the goals that they have set for themselves before discharged. Accomplishing even the smallest of goals is extremely rewarding to the patient…and to us as care providers as well. For more information, contact Michelle Myers, Palliative Care coordinator at 751-4361.

What Is Medicare Abuse?

Abuse describes practices that, either directly or indirectly, result in unnecessary costs to the Medicare Program. Abuse includes any practice that is not consistent with the goals of providing patients with services that are medically necessary, meet professionally recognized standards, and are fairly priced.

Examples of Medicare abuse may include: Misusing codes on a claim, Charging excessively for services or supplies, and Billing for services that were not medically necessary. Both fraud and abuse can expose providers to criminal and civil liability.

False Claims Act (FCA)

The FCA (31 United States Code [U.S.C.] Sections 3729-3733) protects the Government from being overcharged or sold substandard goods or services. The FCA imposes civil liability on any person who knowingly submits, or causes to be submitted, a false or fraudulent claim to the Federal Government. The “knowing” standard includes acting in deliberate ignorance or reckless disregard of the truth related to the claim. An example may be a physician who submits claims to Medicare for medical services he or she knows were not provided. Civil penalties for violating the FCA may include fines and up to 3 times the amount of damages sustained by the Government as a result of the false claims. There also is a criminal FCA (18 U.S.C. Section 287). Criminal penalties for submitting false claims may include fines, imprisonment, or both. For more information on fraud, visit https://oig.hhs.gov/fraud on the Internet.

If you know or suspect fraud and/or abuse, please report it. You can remain anonymous. You may report it using one of these options:

• Notify your supervisor or a member of your management team • Contact Human Resources • Call Karen Richardson, Corporate Responsibility officer or Diana Holub at 751-4771. • Call the Values Line 800-707.2198 or www.ascensionhealthvaluesline.org

Email “phishing” is on the rise, and Ascension’s IT systems and data are at risk. Would you know how to tell the difference between a phishing email and a message from a legitimate sender? Review the following information on phishing to best understand how you can keep your email box and our environment safe.

What is Phishing?

Phishing is an attempt by an individual or group to solicit personal or business information from unsuspecting users. Phishing attempts often have the following characteristics:

• Emails appear to be sent from a legitimate organization or known individual.

• Messages entice users to click on a link to a fraudulent website or to respond to the email.

• Messages request personal information such as account usernames, passwords, first/ last name, date of birth and credit card numbers.

• Links provided often install malicious software on the user’s device compromising the email account.

See examples of phishing attacks at the end of this article.

How can my Account be Affected?

Once a user has become a victim of a phishing attack:

• Theuser’semailaccountcanbeusedbytheattackertosend messages.

• Theattackercanuseinformationinthecompromisedemail accounttobuildfakeemailswithrealnames, titlesand departments, makingthefakeemailextremelyrealisticanddifficulttofiltereitherbya computer system or by the recipient.

• Giventheattackernowhasfullaccesstothecompromisedemailaccount, thedatain the account could also be compromised.

How can I identify if email requests are legitimate? • Ascension Health Information Services (AHIS) does NOT solicit ID or password information via email. IfyoureceiveanemailrequestingIDorpasswordinformation,it isaphishingattack, andyoushouldnotrespondtothemessage.
