WELCOME TO HOOPLA - STAY INFORMED!Today, marks the beginning of a new initiative to keep Blue Demon fans, alumni and friends in touch with DePaul basketball. Hoopla is a daily electronic publication which will spotlight the best of Blue Demon Basketball. The publication will feature a wide-range of daily features centered around DePaul roundball.

Athletic Development has been producing Hoopla for the last six years for distribution in the Champions Club Room, but Hoopla has been reimagined and expanded due to the hard work of summer intern Tim Kelly, a senior at Loras, and Blue Demon basketball alum Mario Stula. The basketball letterwinner will serve as Hoopla’s editor and will manage its production throughout 2011-12 while attending grad school.

HOOPLA will arrive via email daily. To make sure you don’t miss a day, REGISTER HERE Follow us on Twitter - @hoopla_magazine or join our Facebook Fan Page, Click Here

THIS DAY IN DEPAUL HOOPS HISTORY – NOVEMBER 13 AND 14 DePaul rides the conference carousel in 1995DePaul sheds its independent affiliation and joins the short-lived Great Mid-west Conference with fellow schools Cincinnati, Marquette, Memphis, St. Louis, and Dayton, who joined later. In 1995, the Great Midwest Conference would merge with the Metro Conference and certain teams from the Southwestern Conference to form Conference USA, which still exists today. DePaul men’s basketball found great success in their inaugural year in Great Midwest, going 20-9, but lost to Georgia Tech in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Demons would continue to ride the conference carousel when on November 14, 2002 it announced its move to the BIG EAST Conference in the 2005-2006 academic year. The BIG EAST is widely considered the most competitive men’s basketball conference in the nation with 11 of its mem-bers owning more then 20 NCAA Tournament Berths. This past year, the conference set a record by sending 11 and 9 teams to the NCAA Tournament in men’s and women’s basketball, respectively.

MAKE A GIFT!

DEIRDRE NAUGHTON WOMEN’S BASKETBALL - 2006-2010

What does being a DePaul Letterwinner mean to you? BeingaDePaulletterwinnergivesmeahugesenseofprideandsenseoffulfillment.WheneverItellpeople I played basketball at DePaul, they look at it as such a high honor, as do I!

Why did you choose DePaul?I chose De Paul to play for the best basketball coaches in the country, as well as the best conference. I chose De Paul because of its rich basketball tradition that has made the program what it is today. Also, I was able to be close to home, and play in front of all my family and friends!

What was your favorite memory while at DePaul? Ihavetwo:Thefirstofmyfavoritememorieswasseniornight(2010-2011)whenwe beat Notre Dame. Winning that game the last time the seniors were going to playonourhomefloorandcelebratingwiththeteamwaspriceless.Mysecondmemory is making it to the Sweet 16, it was truly the “sweetest” feeling of victory I have ever felt on a basketball court. Wait one more: getting to travel to France was an experience I will NEVER forget. I will always be so grateful I was able to be apart of it!

What did receiving a scholarship from DePaul mean to you?Receiving a scholarship from De Paul has given me so many opportunities after college. I feel extremely grateful for everything De Paul has given me and taught me from my coaches, to Jeanie and the adminis-tration to my professors in the classroom.

What was your funniest memory at DePaul?I have way too many funny memories to address in my time at DePaul, many of them with the one and only Deanna Ortiz. However, One of my funniest has to be when we lost in the BIG EAST Tournament and were not leaving until the next morning. Sam Quigley, Allie Quigley, Erin Catell, Missy Mitidiero, Erin Carney and I were very bored and decided to have a fashion show. So we got together Erin Carney and my makeup and gave each other ridiculous makeovers and used the hallways in the hotel as our cat walk whileoneofourmanagerswasfilmingus.Theonlythingmodelaboutusthatnightwasprobablythatmost of us were 5’10 and above. About a week later, Doug had a picture of us from that night framed in hisoffice.

Brief Summary of your life from graduation until now.Since graduating from DePaul, I am coaching basketball at my High School, New Trier. I am currently sub-bing there as well while getting an endorsement to teach P.E/ Health. Is there a recent highlight that you would like to share with Alumni and friends of Athletics?Thisweekwasthefirstweekofpracticeformeasacoach,insteadofaplayer!Ithought6a.m.practicesended after college, but I was wrong. However, I love coaching at my Alma mater New Trier! Although, I do miss playing basketball, I am starting to really love coaching. I’ve learned soooo much about the game from one of the best and most passionate coaches in the country, Doug Bruno!

What advice would you give to current or future student-athlete?Take advantage of every second in your 4 (or 5, or 6) years you have in college as a student-athlete to betteryourselfonandofftheplayingfield.Makeworkinghardadailyhabitsoyouhavenoregretswhenyour time is up! Also, enjoy all the moments of celebrating and bonding with teammates, there is no friend-ship like it!

It will ensure that DePaul continues to deliver on our founding promise: an excellent education for any talented student who seeks it.

The Campaign supports dreams. Students come to DePaul from across the country and around the world. Their dreams are manycand varied, individual to each, as our students come from all stations in life. Many are the first in their family to attend college.

The realization of their dreams gives rise to new dreams and strong communities. The Campaign supports DePaul’s mission, a mission which blends opportunity and excellence, inquiry and discov-ery, service to the individual and benefit to the larger community. It is manifested in the work that goes on here every day, in libraries, classrooms, laboratories, practice rooms and on the stage in hours of solitude and moments of connection
