Our life is a struggle and full of strife. Everyday , there is a challenge to be encountered. When one problem is over, another one knocks at the

door, and the struggle seems everlasting. But no problem is everlasting and all of them have some solution or other. Man is the nerve center of all actions and it depends on how he behaves under such circumstances and deals with the situation. It is analogous to the situation faced by Ab-himanyu in the Mahabharata. When he got caught in the maze, he was put to innumerable tests, but yet could come out unscathed. But he never lost heart. The morale of the story always be OPTIMISTIC till the very end.

Optimism leads to Hope, Energy, Liveliness and suc-

cess .To understand Optimism better, let’s see a real ex-ample of how it can solve a problem.

“A person known to me had a heart attack and got

himself admitted in hospital. After some time his systems slowed down and finally doctors declared him dead and he was covered with a white sheet. Another colleague of ours stood beside the body, contemplating about the untimely demise. Suddenly he felt as if there was a vibration inside the white cover, and he felt a ray of optimism. He sum-moned the doctors to check, and to our surprise my friend was indeed alive, and continues to remain so. So keep up your optimism, it can even help to the extent that a dead

person can come back to life.” Are you an Optimist? Here is a simple way to see

gauge your level of Optimism.

• How do you see half a glass of water – Is it half full or

half empty.• How do you see the half moon - Does seem to be a

waxing moon, or is it a waning one.• How you consider night - Is it’s a time to sleep and

relax or the eve of a next morning.• How you treat a problem - Do you see a solution

ahead, or just as a problem troubling you. An Optimist see a solution for every problem.

Why you should be an optimistA person is likely to adopt a concept or idea only when it is advantageous to him. Keeping this concept as backdrop, lets see the advantages of being an Optimist.• Better health • Ease in working and more success.• Better acceptability in society • Desire to live

1. Better Health: As one traversing through adulthood and crosses the age of 40, he becomes more con-

OPTIMISM

Be OptimistiCBy Ashutosh Karnatak

Life is not a ‘brief candle’. It is a splendid torch that I want to make it to burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.

cerned about his health. This is because, as by that time, he must have achieved a good financial posi-tion, ensued good schooling for children, achieved a comfortable atmosphere at home, but his health starts deteriorating due to aging. If he does not have an op-timistic outlook, the effect on the health is magnified. Hence, it is important to have more optimism while ag-ing.

Dr.Benard Lown M.D. a Nobel Prize winner in his book The lost art of healing , mentions that “Faith and optimism have life giving qualities.”

Hippocrates the father of medicine, said “for some pa-tient, though conscious that their position is perilous, re-cover their health simply through their contentment with the physicians.” That comes from trust, which a doctor pro-motes by conveying optimism.”

Further ,a new study conducted by researchers at the Psychiatric Center GGZ Delfland, Delft, the Netherlands, suggests that highly optimistic people have lower risks of all-cause death, and lower rates of cardiovascular death than those with high levels of pessimism.

The team led by Erik J. Giltayand colleagues analyzed data from the Arnhem Elderly Study to test whether partici-pants who are optimistic live longer than patients who are pessimistic.

Participants aged 65 to 85 years (999 men and wom-en) completed a 30-item questionnaire on health, self-re-spect, morale, optimism and relationships. 941 (466 men, 475 women) of them had complete information on ques-tions regarding optimism.

They were then divided into four groups based on their level of optimism. Over the follow up period of 9.1 years (1991 to 2001), there were 397 deaths. Those with high levels of optimism had a 55 percent lower risk of death from all causes, and a 23 percent lower risk of cardiovas-cular death.

An inverse relationship was found between level of op-timism and risk of death, with a stronger protective effect of optimism in men than women for all-cause mortality, but not cardiovascular mortality.

“In conclusion, we found that the trait of optimism was an important long-term determinant of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in elderly subjects independent of sociodemographic characteristics and cardiovascular risk factors. A predisposition toward optimism seemed to provide a survival benefit in elderly subjects with relatively short life expectancies otherwise,” the authors were quot-ed as saying.

“Our results, combined with the finding that hopeless-

ness was associated with an increased incidence or pro-gression of disease, suggest that dispositional optimism affects the progression of cardiovascular disease, “ they added. (ANI) 2. Ease in work and more success: It a known fact that

a man with optimism has less personal ego and finds himself better placed in the amidst others. He receives cooperation from others in getting any job done, thus overcoming impediments and resistance. This leads to more success. An optimistic person always gets help more easily from others than a pessimist can. A pes-simistic person often leaves a job undone, as soon as some hurdle is comes up,, under the pretext, why he should trouble himself with the problem, when he can just move away from it. On the contrary an optimistic person would try to tackle that hurdle with a thought in his mind , “ let me attempt once more” This “Once More” syndrome is a key to success.

3. Better acceptability in society: As per Maslow’s theory of needs, social recognition is one of the premier needs of a man. An optimistic person often garners more respect in society. People see him in a different light. His words are valued by others. People look towards to solve their problems, as an optimistic person always strives for a solution. People like to talk to such a person as he inspires others. They get energized after talking to him.

3. Desire to live: As mentioned earlier, our life is full of struggles. Day in and day out we have to scuffle with difficult situations, and very often, someone breaks down thinking that his life is a burden. Under such cir-cumstances, an optimist would never desire to give up, but rather take the situation as a challenge and fight back. An Optimist enjoys the life given by God. He not only generates desires within himself, but also inspires others to live and enjoy.

There are other numerous advantages of adopting an optimistic attitude. But some may argue that in an environ-ment of pollution; challenges, frustrations and struggles how one can remain optimistic.

How do you develop optimism • “The future belongs to those who believe in the

beauty of their dreams.”• “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement.

Nothing can be done without hope or confidence.”• “You see things and say,’Why?’ but I dream things

and say, ‘Why not?’ “• “When one door of happiness closes, another

Page 5: HOPE OPTIMISM - Plus ApproachHOPE& OPTIMISM. 2 C ontent Hope is a feeling of desire and expectation that things will go well in the future Optimism The power of Hope Finding Hope Short

opens.”• “The harder you fall, the higher you bounce.”

Caution: Optimistic person is required to have one cau-tion. They tend to be OVERCONFIDENT. Therefore here is an advice to optimistic people“Keep your eyes on the stars, and your feet on the ground.”

“Optimism means expecting the best, but confidence means knowing how to handle the worst. Never make a move if you are merely optimistic.” – The Zurich Axioms After knowing the advantage and precaution, it is essen-tial to know different techniques for practicing OPTIMISM. Some of them are as under:

• Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomor-row: Every day is new day and previous day becomes past and coming day is the future. Every day is a new day for us, which need to be handled with optimism. It should not have shadow of yesterday. Generally out yesterdays or years overcast our present and conse-quently our life gets disturbed. Better to Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.

• 2) Living in Present: Consider every moment is the new moment and requires to be lived accordingly. Present is the moment which needs to be lived before it becomes past.

• 3) Dawn follows Dusk: Life is not always in the same pattern and ups and downs are bound to come. Op-

timistic persons sees light after every darkness and waits for it and with this hope he travels in the journey of life and ultimately with this hope and optimism they get one day the required result. Believe firmly on the fact,” Dawn Follows Dusk.” May be some nights are longer than others, but it is definite that Dawn follows dusk. Requirement is to maintain patience.

• 4) It is not the end of life: End of the life happens only once , which is of course not in our hands. But before that generally after having any failure ,we feel that it is the end of life an we shall not be gain any thing in life . Despite of all my labor nothing was received. I won’t want to live. Such pessimistic thoughts shall not be able to retrieve the situation but definitely cause problems for future. It is not the end of the world or life. Total future is in front of you and failures are not permanent, tomorrow you are going to succeed. Take inspiration from the following quote,

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed -- Mi-chael Jordan

Future is bright: Last but not the least, past may have bit-ter experience, present is today and tomorrow is unknown to us. Consider it as brighter than earlier .Why not to think about brighter side of the situation. With hope that future is brighter, take the life in stride and be optimistic .

So decision is yours, be optimistic – be happy.

Hope structures your life in anticipation of the future and influences how you feel in the present. Similar to optimism, hope creates a positive mood about

an expectation, a goal, or a future situation. Such mental time travel influences your state of mind and alters your behavior in the present. The positive feelings you experi-ence as you look ahead, imagining hopefully what might happen, what you will attain, or who you are going to be, can alter how you currently view yourself. Along with hope comes your prediction that you will be happy, and this can have behavioral consequences.• Hope shapes your methods of traversing your current

situation. • The cognitions associated with hope--how you think

when you are hopeful--are pathways to desired goals and reflect a motivation to pursue goals.

• Better problem-solving abilities have been found in people who are hopeful when compared with low-hope peers and those who are hopeful have a ten-dency to be cognitively flexible and able to mentally explore novel situations.Technically, hope does not fit the criteria as an emo-

tion. These criteria include the concept that emotions are automatic and reflexive, they cause physical and behav-ioral changes as a result of nervous system responses,

and that an emotion provides you with immediate informa-tion about a situation that can lead you to take action. Per-haps hope is better understood as a cognition that creates a certain mood--a prolonged affective state--lacking the immediacy and intensity of reflexive emotions yet capable of determining one’s outlook on life.

Having hope is to imagine a positive outcome. The di-rective of many motivational principles is to visualize what you want and imagine positive outcomes so that your be-havior is unconsciously structured to create them. Most of the things we do are unconsciously processed. Thus, con-sidering your endeavours before bedtime, or even going over your to-do list, is worthwhile since your brain is sensi-tive to your conscious perception of future events and will unconsciously work toward your goals.

The way in which a hopeful person handles disappoint-ment differs from those who are not. Even if the present is unpleasant, the thought of a positive future can be stress-buffering and can reduce the impact of negative events or disappointment. Being unrelentingly optimistic about the future helps you to recognize that you are adaptable and capable, enabling you to reassure yourself that you will get through a tough time. Having a powerful hope that you will adapt also provides a limitlessly positive version of the future.

In 1965 Martin Seligman “discovered” learned helpless-ness. He found that when animals are subjected to difficult situations they cannot control, they stop trying to escape.

They become passive.Human beings are the same. If you experience devastat-

ing defeats, a persistent situation that you couldn’t change, or experienced a terrifying situation that you could not con-trol your exposure to, then you may have lost hope for your ability to change your life or to change painful situations. Sometimes an ongoing mood disorder can lead to feelings of hopelessness.

Apathy or hopelessness may be puzzling to those around you. Why wouldn›t you try to get a job, make friends, eat healthier, or leave someone who is abusive? When you have no hope, you see any efforts to change your life as futile. You may blame yourself. You might say that you cannot manage life, cannot make friends and cannot succeed in getting a job. You accept whatever happens as beyond your control. You may begin to despair.

When you don’t have hope, you have no energy or mo-tivation for therapy or for any effort to change your situation. What’s the use in reaching out to meet people? You are sure you will be rejected. Why bother exercising or cleaning your home or volunteering--it won’t really make a difference. You know you will always be lonely, depressed, anxious, unemployed, or stuck in the same situation that is making you miserable. You don’t want to risk the pain of further dis-appointment by even trying.

Unfortunately, this painful despair and resignation sets up a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you have no hope, no belief in therapy or that any action you take will make any difference, then that may well be the outcome. Change is very difficult, has multiple ups and downs, and requires motivation and commitment. There are many ways to find hope:1. Find a clear path. Being able to see how the steps you

are taking will lead to desired change is critical to having hope. If you don’t logically see how what you are doing can have a positive result, then carrying out the plan will likely be difficult. Write down each step that you need to take to get where you want to be. If someone else is working with you, then push him or her to explain how the steps lead to the results you want.

2. Look for role models who have found solutions. There are many, many people who have overcome tremen-dous adversity. Reading their stories and surrounding

yourself with supportive messages and people can help you build hope.

3. Do what you know you can do. When you are in despair, taking one step that is out of your routine can help break the sense of powerlessness you have. Make your bed. Cook dinner. Talk to a friend. Take a step you know you can do and that action can make a difference over time. Keep doing it and then try to add more actions. Overcom-ing the inertia of helplessness can help you build hope.

4. Perform an act of kindness. Doing acts of kindness can have a dramatic effect on your mood and outlook. Kindness triggers the release of serotonin, so it has an anti-depressant effect. It also calms stress and helps reduce pain.Small acts of kindness that you do repeatedly can help

you feel more connected and have a greater sense of con-tribution. Notice that doing acts of kindness repeatedly is important. Do acts of kindness daily. Even watching others perform acts of kindness can have a positive effect.

Notice your judgments, the thoughts that pass through your head stating that nothing will work for you or that acts of kindness is a useless idea. Let those thoughts pass through and not control your behavior. Your lack of hope may lead you to think that these ideas won’t help you.

Part of kindness is to stop judging yourself and be kind to yourself as well. How would you treat someone else who was in your situation? Practice thinking of yourself with compassion.5. Turn to your faith. Your faith can be a strong ally in holding

onto to hope. Sometimes your faith offers the support of not being alone and trusting that a higher power is with you. If you are questioning your beliefs, then talk with someone in your faith that you respect. Others have en-countered difficult times and they will understand. Voicing your questions is a step toward resolving your confusion and is also a step toward hope.

6. Practice mindfulness while doing acts of kindness and in your everyday life. Your thoughts may naturally wander to the past and focus on events that didn’t work out or other situations that were painful. That will often add to your depression and hopelessness. When you are de-pressed you have difficulty seeing any positive events or remembering that you were ever happy.About the Author : Karyn Hall, Ph.D., is the director/owner

On 11th May, 2018, there were 02 headlines in News Pa-pers:1. Today, Himanshu Roy, Additional General of Police, Ma-

harashtra, shot himself with his private licensed revolver and took his life at his residence. For the past two years, the late Himanshu Roy was in severe pain on account of cancer and was on medical leave.

2. Australian scientist, defends decision to seek assisted suicide“One should be free to choose their death, and when it is

an appropriate time,” said Australian scientist, David Goodall, who ended his life at euthanasia clinic in Switzerland. He was 104.

The scientist was not ill, but he had limited mobility, failing eye sight and said he had lost the desire to live any longer.

Goodall travelled from Australia to Switzerland this month, as Australian laws do not permit assisted suicide whereas in Swiss laws, it is permitted. So, He has travelled to Switzerland, with assisted suicide advocates, after a public campaign in which he advocated for free choice about when to die.

Further, we hear lots of young people are suffering from depression. Even teen agers (Students) are committing sui-cides. In Kota city, the District Collector has issued orders to all coaching institutes and Schools to mandatorily arrange counselling of students regularly.

Big organizations are becoming suffocating and small ones too egocentric. Young people are at crossroads where there is a clash between expectations from life and reality of the world. Employees feel that they are being treated as resources and not as human being.

The young generation should not compromise and be-come an ant when they can be butterflies. They can do that by focusing on attempting to go after opportunities, possibili-ties, new ideas rather than focus on problems with the old.

If we inspire just one kid today to not give up her/ his dreams of being a butterfly- we can get Lacs of kids out of depression today!

Here, I wanted to mention another story. When, I was on Operation Table of a very small town after a Road accident.

The Doctor asked my consent for amputation of my left hand which was crushed badly in the accident. I enquired from the Doctor about his experience in dealing such cases, requested him to save my hand mentioning that the technology has advanced & there may be some possibility. Despite in deep pain, I again asked, whether I will be able to use some artificial hand & after getting the affirmation, I immediately consented.

Acceptance of Present situation and moving forward is the Positivity and I could understand positive thinking with this example only. Further, Positivity or Positive thinking or Positive approach in real life could not last longer without Optimism or HOPE.

Hope is an optimistic state of mind that is based on an expectation of positive outcomes with respect to events and circumstances in one’s life or the world at large. As a verb, its definitions include: “expect with confidence” and “to cherish a desire with anticipation”.

Also Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear the hardship today.

It is also generally accepted that happiness is an emotion and that hope and optimism are not. Optimism is an overall explanatory style (global condition) that positive things will occur independent of one’s ability (external condition).

So the happiness, hope and positivity move together. Happiness comes with lots of hope with positive attitude.

It is also important to know what makes you happy. People’s happiness comes from different activities like eat-ing good food, shopping of their choices, playing games, sports, painting, singing or listening good music, fitness ex-ercise, meeting good friends, visiting new places, meeting new people, participating religious functions and many-many more. However I personally feel that real happiness comes when you do some good things for others. Specially, when some-one has a strong desire and you help, it will make you happier. A study reveals that people who behaved generously were happier than those who made selfish decisions. In fact, just thinking about generous and kind, triggers happiness reactions in our brain.
