A Message From Pastor The other day I was wandering through Lowes in search of an electric power strip to better accommodate all my electronic toys. As I searched I sang to myself along with the music I heard playing, then caught myself. I was singing Christmas music, Deck the halls with boughs of holly, fa la la ….” “Its not even Thanksgiving!I thought. People often ask why we dont sing Christmas Carols in worship before Christmas. One reason is very practical. If we sing them during Advent, then well be tired of Christmas songs before Christmas gets here. Its bad enough that we hear them in the stores and on the radio and during Hallmark movies for six weeks. The better reason is that Advent is about waiting and anticipating. The best thing about a birthday party when we are children is the preparation and the planning, and the expectation of good things to come in the form of gifts. When we wait until Christmas to sing our favorite Christmas carols, we treasure them that much more for the anticipation. However, this rule is often relaxed on Wednesday nights where Christmas carols fit with the skits. And, by the fourth Sunday in Advent, Christmas songs do tend to find their way into worship, along with the Cantata. So, in most Lutheran churches, we wait a while before singing Christmas songs. And, besides, there are lots of (at least my) favorite songs to sing in Advent. (cont. on next page) Volume 41 Issue 12 December, 2015 Address: 9425 N. A Message From Pastor

The other day I was wandering through Lowes in search of an electric power strip to better accommodate all my electronic toys. As I searched I sang to myself along with the music I heard playing, then caught myself. I was singing Christmas music, “Deck the halls with boughs of holly, fa la la ….” “It’s not even Thanksgiving!” I thought.

People often ask why we don’t sing Christmas Carols in worship before Christmas. One reason is very practical. If we sing them during Advent, then we’ll be tired of Christmas songs before Christmas gets here. It’s bad enough that we hear them in the stores and on the radio and during Hallmark movies for six weeks.

The better reason is that Advent is about waiting and anticipating. The best thing about a birthday party when we are children is the preparation and the planning, and the expectation of good things

to come in the form of gifts.

Pastor’s Message (cont.)

So, come to worship in Advent on Sundays, Saturdays, and Wednesdays, and enjoy the music and the anticipation of the birth of the Babe who changed the world with the gifts of light and life and love.

In HOPE and peace

Pastor Lynn

Sometimes the words of the Christmas story become too familiar and predictable. Our usual schedule of Wednesday evening worship will include a set of skits called Advent Now and Then. This set of skits takes us

back and forth in time, with a scene set in our time, compared to a scene set in biblical time.

People playing NOW roles will wear modern clothing. People playing THEN roles will wear simple biblical costumes.

So that we can utilize all four skits, the first one will be performed on Sunday, November 29,

the First Sunday of Advent. The remaining ones will be performed on Wednesday evenings during a simple Service of Evening Prayer December 2, 9, and 16 at 7pm.

These skits will be “Readers Theater” with performers reading their lines from the script.

A copy of the script is available from the church office.

As Lutherans it is important to understand the source of the Reformation and how what happened in the 1500s still affects our lives and faith today. Join us Wednesday mornings at 10am in the Parlor, for Reformation Roots. For more information, see the accompanying description on the following page or Pastor Lynn.

Note: This class will not meet November 25, December 23, nor December 30.

Reformation Roots Martyr Moments

St. Thomas, Apostle

Feast Day December 21

St. Thomas is best known as “Doubting Thomas” who was skepti-cal at first when he had heard that Jesus had risen from the dead and appeared to the other apostles. His name was derived from the Arama-ic or Syriac: Toma, meaning twin. The equivalent term for twin in Greek is Didymus. Early Syrian tra-ditions relate that his full name was Judas Thomas.

It has been said that St. Thomas was the only witness to the As-sumption of Mary into heaven when she dropped her girdle. The other apostles were skeptical of this until Thomas showed them Mary’s empty tomb with the girdle inside.

Thomas is traditionally believed to have sailed to India in AD 52 to spread the Christian faith and landed at the Port of Tamilikon where there was a Jewish commu-nity.

According to tradition St. Thomas was killed at Mylapore and interred there in AD 72. His remains were removed and re-interred in Ortona, Italy except for his skull that is on the Island of Patmos.

Reformation Roots

Do you ever wonder why we have so many Christian denominations and if there is really much difference be-tween them? The answers to these questions lie in the dramatic and tur-bulent times of the Reformation. This high definition series brings to life the stories and struggles that still impact us today. Each session is 20-30 minutes long and is accompa-nied by a study guide designed for 50-60 minutes of class time.

Session 1: From Night to Dawn: the Stage is set for the Reformation Session 2: From bondage to Freedom: Luther Rediscovers Grace Session 3: From Scholar to Provoca-teur: Luther Takes on the Church Session 4: From Priest to Outlaw Session 5: From Heretic to Hero Session 6: From Scholar to Father: The Domestic Luther

Session 7: From Simple to Complex: The New Church Finds Common Ground Bonus Session 8: Luther’s Legacy Session 9: Swiss Reformation: A Ra-tionalist’s Revolt Session 10: Radical Reformation: Rev-olution and Withdrawal Session 11: English Reformation: The Political Reformation Session 12: The Catholic Refor-mation: Reaction and Renewal

Council Highlights October 2015

Luther Springs, a camp site in Florida where people of all ages can grow spiritually and personally, is in high demand and cannot fulfill all requests due to lack of space and facilities. A “Mission Possible” Campaign is under way to raise 3 Million dollars through contributions from Lutheran congregations and individuals. Hope will address those needs and its participation in January.

Casey Gaylardo, Diane Kahler, and Hans Witter will serve on the nominating committee for church council.

Due to lack of funding, the hanging of Christmas lights in Citrus Springs is in jeopardy. Churches and businesses along Citrus Springs Blvd are asked to fund the long standing tradition. HOPE and several other churches have committed $200 each towards the effort.

HOPE is committed to participate in the Christmas parade and plans are under way.

The Long Range planning committee is seeking input from the congregation during three small group meetings. December 6 after the 8 am service and December 13 and 20 after the 10 am service. Please, participate.

CHRISTMAS PARADE AT HOPE

Citrus Springs “Polar Express” parade will be held on Sunday, December 13 and will start at the fountain on Citrus Springs Blvd at 2pm. Hope’s float will be driven by Council President Harold Skidmore with Mary, Joseph and Jesus along with our large crèche. Hope’s participants should be at the church by 1:30.

COOKIES, COOKIES, COOKIES

On Friday, December 11 at 10:30am all are invited to the baking of 6 dozen cookies for the parade in the church kitchen. Cookie dough will be available along with cookie baking sheets. After the cookies have cooled they will be packed 3 to a bag for distribution at Wesley Jones Park after the parade. Deacon Diane will be in the kitchen with the ovens ready.

Christmas Events Critics Corner Clara and Mr. Tiffany by Susan Vreeland

It’s 1893, and at the Chicago World’s Fair, Louis Comfort Tiffany makes his debut with a luminous ex-hibition of innovated stain-glass win-dows that he hopes will earn him a place on the international artistic stage. But behind the scenes in his New York studio is free thinking Clara Driscoll, head of his woman’s division, who conceives of and de-signs nearly ALL of the iconic leaded-glass lamps for which Tiffany will long be remembered but she is never publically acknowledged. This histor-ical novel, based on Clara’s actual let-ters, shows the ultra-rich and the truly working poor. A great read.

I Shall Be Near To You, A Novel by Erin Lindsey McCabe

This is an extraordinary novel about a strong-willed woman who disguises herself as a man in order to fight beside her husband in the Civil War. Although this is a novel, it is based on the many women who did disguise themselves as men to fight in the Civil War-and that is based on the truth. This book is a different kind of read that illustrates little known facts about these women and the brutality of the Civil War.

Both books would make excellent Christmas gifts for teens and adults.

The congregation is encouraged to submit a book or movie review. Critic: Deacon Diane

Church Property Report Poinsettias for Christmas

The lawn mowing, weed whacking, and shrub trimming is still going on because of the warm and wet weather. We are currently replac-ing all the emergency lights be-cause of battery failures. The new LED emergency lights are cheaper than replacing the batteries and they will stay on for 90 minutes. We are also in the long process of getting rid of a lot of outdated stuff. It was long overdue.

Steve Northsea has gotten very creative with the sign information display. Take a little time to review it.

849 work hours were logged by the property committee as of this newsletter. This does not include the work that Steve puts in on the sign, or the work that Hans has been doing on the making of the church furniture.

Red Poinsettias will be available for $8 each and will be used again this year on our altar at Christmas. There are 2 plants in a pot with a foil cover. There are order forms on the church office desk and pay-ment is requested in advance. Please fill out a sheet for each flower indicating if it’s in honor or memory of a loved one. Your plants may be taken after the Christmas Eve worship. LAST DATE TO OR-DER FLOWERS IS DECEMBER 13.

Jacob’s Journey Smile!

Page 8

JACOB'S JOURNEY: The time draws near, we are looking forward to the soon return of our Lord and Savior, Je-sus Christ, in accordance with His promise, that He would return and take us home: John 14:1-3.. It was the great expectation of the early church - they were expecting the "any moment re-turn" of their Lord. 2,000 years later, the church is still expecting the return of our Lord.

With the passage of time we are cer-tainly closer than ever before. The Book of Revelation tells us much about events which will transpire before our Lord returns and this present age which will change forever. If you are interested in today and tomorrow and events which point to the Second Ad-vent, you will discover many answers in our class which meets on Monday at 1 PM in Luther Hall.

SMILE AND SAY….CHEESE!

It’s time to have our church directory updated. Yes, it’s been longer than you think since the last time we did this. Lifetouch Directories will be at Hope on January 8 and January 9th from Friday (1/8) from 12-7pm and Saturday (1/9) from 10-5pm.

Appointment time sign up will be on 12/6, 12/13, and 12/20.

All this means is that we have a couple of months to practice our smiles. If you would like to help with the sign ups (and I will certainly need 2 or 3 to help me) let Deacon Diane know. Remember there is no cost for your 8x10 picture but I’d sure like to have at least 46 folks sign up so we can get additional pocket sized directories for free.

SMILE PRACTICE IS NOW

THE ORDER OF THE DAY!

Martha Circle met on November 4, 2105 with 7 ladies in attendance. Special handouts were made during craft time for the upcoming Christmas Parade in Citrus Springs. Please plan to attend on December 13 at 2:00PM and see what our ladies made and enjoy the parade with us in front of Hope. The ladies bagged candy to help finish filling our shoeboxes that were being delivered to the drop-off destination on November 16. Also Christmas cards were signed to send to our friend Chaplain Jerry Johnson at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He will deliver our cards to Wounded Warriors and USO service members in that area. Plans were also made during the meeting for Martha Circle to host the December 13 coffee hour after the 10:00AM service.

Martha Circle Operation Christmas Child

OCC stands for Operation Christ-mas Child, but it could stand for Our Christian Commitment!

Hope and friends of Hope were defi-nitely committed in 2015. We filled 252 shoeboxes this year. Wow! An-other record broken for us…. Thanks to all of you for helping in so many ways to make this ministry outreach a wonderful success.

We are blessed to live in this coun-try and we shared our blessings…Because of your generosity, 252 chil-dren will learn more about Jesus this year in countries such as the Philip-pines, Zambia, and Peru.

We may never know how many chil-dren and families were touched by our simple gifts but I believe God knows and he loves us for our gener-ous hearts.

Thank you for a spectacular year of caring and sharing…

Carole Warden

Next meeting for Martha Circle is December 2 at 1:00PM in CR3. Please join us for an hour or two of social time, crafts, and light refreshments.

Did You Ever Wonder?

Did you ever wonder who wrote O Come, All Ye Faithful?

John Francis Wade, author of this hymn, was hounded out of England in 1745. He was a Roman Catholic layman in Lancashire; but because of persecution aris-ing from the Jacobite rebellion, streams of Catholics fled to France and Portu-gal, where communities of English-speaking Catholics appeared.

In those days, the printing of musical scores was cumbersome, and copying them by hand was an art. In the famous Roman Catholic College and Ministry Center in Douay, France, Wade taught music and became renowned as a copyist of musical scores. His work was exquisite.

In 1743, Wade, 32, had produced a copy of a Latin Christmas carol beginning with the phrase Adeste Fidelis, Laeti trumphantes. At one time historians be-lieved he had simply discovered an ancient hymn by an unknown author, but most scholars now believe Wade himself composed the lyrics. Seven original hand-copied manuscripts of this Latin hymn have been found, all of them bear-ing Wade’s signature.

John Wade passed away on August 16, 1786, at age 75. His obituary honored him for his “beautiful manuscripts” that adorned chapels and homes.

Time passed and one day an Anglican minister named Rev. Frederick Oakeley came across Wade’s Latin Christmas carol. By the time Oakeley became as Ro-man Catholic priest, after converting in 1845, he once again came across this hymn. He came up with a simpler translation, more vigorous O Come, All Ye Faithful, Joyful and Triumphant!
