2019 MISSIONS Thank you for your faithfulness in being the hands and feet of Jesus! Our giving and service this year is helping our brothers and sisters here in Pocahontas County, in our state, our country and around the world. Here are the highlights:

• Saturday night suppers have served an average of 32 visitors. These suppers have provided not only a tasty meal but lots of fellowship and fun too. • Contributions of $2000 for Iowa flood relief. • In-kind giving valued at $4200 (cleaning buckets, personal dignity kits, baby sweaters, school bags, school kits, hygiene kits, and quilt) plus $400 to assist with shipping costs. Monthly donations to Upper Des Moines Outreach food pantry and $1000 in financial support plus helping with the Mobile Food Pantry every other month. • Giving of almost $3000 to Heifer International and $785 to Church World Service blankets. Support of our military by providing BibleSticks for over 2 squadrons of soldiers – $750 in giving. Continued missionary support of $1400 for Larry and Jane Kies, Iowa missionaries serving at Africa University.

The total mission giving is over $16,000! Thank you.

A special thank you for all the many acts of kindness and generosity

given this year. Pastor Kris, Margaret and Kathy.

The Food Bank of Iowa wishes to thank Hope United Methodist Church and the Pocahontas Ministerial Association for their leadership and for their many years of service

with the Mobile Food Pantry. In 2020 Upper Des Moines Opportunities will

have the sole responsibility for the mobile food pantry

in Pocahontas County.

UMW January Notes

Bible Verse - Since you are all set apart by God, made holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with a holy way of life: compassion, kindness, humility, gentle-ness, and patience. Colossians 3:12

The UMW had a very busy 2019! Fifty-five members worked together to develop a creative, supportive fellowship and expand concepts of mission – from The Purpose. The nut sale was successful and most of the items are gone. The proceeds support local church projects. Thank you for your support.

Once again the Vespers service was memorable. The committees did an outstanding job – presenting a program to help us prepare our hearts for Advent and preparing a wonderful meal with lovely table decorations. Thank you to the men who did the serving! It was a special evening.

The Executive Committee gave $700 in year-end gifts to the PAC School Lunch program, Pastor’s Discretionary Fund, Upper Des Moines Outreach, Centers Against Abuse and Sexual Assault (CAASA) in NW Iowa, Shesler Hall in Sioux City and Hillcrest Family Services in Dubuque.

Truth Circle prepared and delivered 26 cookie plates.

The UMW selected John Nedved as the recipient of the 2019 Special Mission Recognition pin. Each year someone is recognized for his or her mission work in the church. John is always working behind the scenes maintaining our church and helping with any projects where the women need some assistance. Thank you, John!

Quarterly leaders: First, Judy Timan; second, Dixie Gottsch;

third, Audrey Simonson; fourth, Joan Reinhart.

January: NO CIRCLE MEETING

On Jan. 19, across the United Methodist connection, we come together to help bridge the gap between church and community. We do this by participating in an offering set aside for Human Relations Day. For more than half a century, United Methodists have observed this churchwide special Sunday in recognition of the message Jesus demonstrated during his life: every one of God’s children is important. The Human Relations Day offering supports neighborhood ministries through Community Developers, community advocacy through United Methodist Voluntary Services and works with at-risk youth through the Youth Offender Rehabilitation Program. Such ministries give us the opportunity to walk in the margins and continue the work of Jesus.

Hope UMC will take a special offering on January 19th.

Need a New Year’s Resolution?

Consider daily reading for spiritual growth. And HUMC library can help!

The library has MANY devotional/ inspirational books that can be an

encouragement to you in your Christian walk!! Here are just a few:

Meditations for Women edited by Dorothy Canfield Fisher

Vintage book published in the 1940’s. “This book includes meditations for every

day in the year - a year's worth of Spiritual refreshment.”

Daily Disciplines for the Christian Man: Practical Steps to an Empowered

Spiritual Life by Bob Beltz

“Our life in Christ is not a natural phenomenon,” writes Dr. Bob Beltz.

“It is a supernatural phenomenon. We need to learn how to tap into the power

source of a daily walk with Christ.” In Daily Disciplines for the Christian Man,

Dr. Bob Beltz gives us seven clear and simple steps that will enable us to live

one day at a time with Christ, led and empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Hope for Each Day by Billy Graham

This devotional book contains a great deal of practical wisdom in its easily

understood daily devotional messages. Each devotion is dated, titled, has a

key verse, which is followed by a short message that can be read in two

minutes. This devotional provides practical insights from the

Bible in a way everyone can understand.

One Minute of Praise: The Most Powerful Minute of Your Day by Darlene McCarty

In One Minute of Praise, Darlene McCarty shares a concept so simple, that everyone

can do it; yet so revolutionary it will transform your life. The secret to walking in victory

with God is not how much time we take to praise Him, but that we always take the

time - one minute at a time - no matter when or where.

Normally books are to be checked out for 2-4 weeks, however, please feel free to keep any book as long as you need

to finish. Even for the entire year in the case of a yearly devotional!

These books will be available for checkout in the Book Nook during the month of January.

December Update on the King's Kids The King's Kids program had a very busy December focusing on CHRISTmas. The session on December 11 had the kids learning the story behind many of the items we see and use to decorate during the season. During the C.I.A. (Christ in Action) portion of the afternoon, they created door decorations for the residents at Arlington Place and the Pocahontas Manor. The theme of the decorations the younger kids made was “Jesus Is the Reason for the Season!” while the older kids used the theme “Jesus...the Best Gift Ever!”. the King's Kids were excited to share a little CHRISTmas cheer with the residents. On December 18 we had an amazing afternoon celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. The boys and girls decorated cupcakes, sang “Happy Birthday” to Jesus, blew out candles and then enjoyed eating birthday cupcakes! Next they had to solve clues that led their teams all over the church to retrieve their gifts. They then used the contents of their gifts to create Christmas Message Boards. Swing by the Pocahontas Fellowship Hall and take a look at them! Who doesn't love a fun race! The teams had to stack cups to “build” a Christmas tree. They were reminded that the evergreen is a symbol of God's constant and never-ending love. The next race involved some speedy gift wrapping. Each team wrapped up the best possible gift anyone could possibly receive. Have any guesses as to what was inside? You guessed it...Baby Jesus in a manger! Each child went home with a picture of Baby Jesus they could wrap up to put under their own tree. We all need to remember JESUS is the reason for the season. We look forward to more fun, faith-filled learning in 2020. THANK YOU again for all the amazing help we have received from our church family! With your support, we hope the King's Kids pro-gram will continue to grow and have a positive impact on the youth who attend. God's Blessings! Lori Baade and Jeanne Sindergard
