BALANCE AND MODERATION

Too little food causes weight loss and poor growth.

Too much food is stored in the body as fat. Too much body fat increases the risk of:

Page 24: H.O.P.E.

Metabolism

What is it? Sum of the chemical processes that keep you alive Requires Energy and nutrients Energy comes from carbs, fats, and proteins

The more energy your body has, the more efficient your metabolism can be

Therefore, we need food (calories) to provide energy and nutrients to our body’s processes (metabolism)

Page 25: H.O.P.E.

Calories

What are calories? It’s how the energy in food is measured

Review figure 1 on page 155

Page 26: H.O.P.E.

Carbohydrates

What are carbohydrates? Simple and complex sugars Simple: single/double sugar molecules Complex: many sugar molecules linked together

Sugar (glucose) provides ENERGY for your cells

FRUCTOSE and LACTOSE are good sugarsSUCROSE is bad sugarWhat products provide these sugars?Foods are broken down into GLUCOSE

sources
