Three types of Action (Call for Proposals)• Research and Innovation Action (RIA)

– Low Technology Readiness Level research and innovation (TRL)– All organisations funded at 100% of direct costs plus additional 25%

towards indirect costs• Innovation Actions (IA)

– Higher TRL– All non-profit organisations funded same as RIA– For-profit-organisations funded at 70% of direct costs plus additional

25% of that towards indirect costs• Coordination and Support Actions (CSA)

– Coming together in large networks to discuss and agree potential research, standards, legislation, etc

– Funded same as RIA (ie 100% +25% for all)

Submission process

• All on line via Participant Portal• Submission is either Single Stage or Two Stage• Single Stage is as it sounds.

– max 70 pages for RIA or IA and 50 pages for CSA– For 2016 closes on 26th Jan 2016– For 2017 closes on 1st Feb 2017

• Two Stage (never CSA but not all RIA/IA):– 1st Stage is 10 pages, Excellence and part of Impact only,

closes 20th Jan 2016 (or 26 Jan 2017)– 2nd Stage, if successful at Stage 1, is full proposal (max 70

Evaluation

• Excellence (how good is the idea?)• Impact (what difference will it make?)• Quality and efficiency of the implementation (how good is

the project plan?)• All scored out of 5 (so maximum score is 15)

– Impact weighted 1.5 times in Innovation Actions for ranking• Evaluation Rules are published – read them• Guidance to Evaluators is published – read it• All suitable personnel should be enrolled as potential

Evaluators (i.e. Experts) as this gives very valuable insight

Information Days & Brokerage Events

• Smart Green and Integrated Transport Information Day was held on 5th Nov in Brussels – Full details of the participants seeking partners at the

associated Brokerage event• An Information day for the Automated Road Transport

theme was held by ERTRAC on 6th Nov in Brussels• An Information Day for Smart Cities and Communities, inc

the Transport theme, was also held on 6th Nov in Brussels.

• European Transport NCPs have a website for partner search

Useful sources of information

• Templates for proposals (RIA/IA/CSA) exist that give information about what each section should contain

• IPR Helpdesk has templates for e.g. Memoranda of Understanding between potential collaborators

• Annotated Model Grant Agreement is THE rule book• Enterprise Europe Network also help with partner

searching• UK NCP always happy to answer questions, review

proposals, recommend additional sources of help, etc

Results from 2014/2015

• All projects funded by EC since 1990 published and searchable including participants and abstracts

• Searching for ‘Urban Mobility ‘ in Horizon 2020 Transport Programme returns 24 results:- E.g. MG-5.3-2014: Tackling urban road congestion results in Opening

the cycling and walking tracking potential with funding of almost €3m and the involvement of Southend-on-Sea Borough Council

• MG-8.3-2015: Facilitating market uptake of innovative transport infrastructure solutions- NO PROPOSALS RECEIVED

How to build a winning team AND influence future calls for proposals

• Get involved– Join a European Technology Platform and get involved in their

working groups – they work to advise the EC as to the future programme requirements

– Join and be active in other European bodies, organisations and networks (e.g. POLIS, CIVINET UK & Ireland)

– Participate in a CSA – your basic costs will be covered • All of these initiatives have the benefits of:

– Working alongside potential future partners– Demonstrating to others your value as a partner– Helping to inform the future work programme
