Conventional thinking about the future is linear.

Advanced planning is therefore narrow, limited to tunneled “flashlight” visions (simple extrapolations).

Unexpected futures occur outside the beams–the result of the interaction between conventional extrapolation and serendipitous real or imagined events.

Example(Conventional Development)

In the 1970’s, falling component prices helped begin the hobbyist PC industry.

Serendipitous Event Causing Unexpected Future:

In 1979, a group of Apple designers visited Xerox Parc (lab) and saw computers drawing overlapping windows on the screens.

(Or, they thought they saw it.)

In fact, Xerox had not figured out how to deal with the graphic contents underneath other windows in the way the Apple designers thought they had.

Apple designers took what they saw as proof and set out to match Xerox’s “accomplishment”. They proceeded to make an important breakthrough in interface design (and consequently helped give birth to the PC as a mainstream phenomena).

Horizon Projects Process

(subject to change)

Thursday morning:

-Choose theme(s) / condition from Walled Garden discussion points (alter as needed to clarify)

-Extrapolate that condition 10 to 15 years into the future using conventional development model (current expectations, only more so)

-Create 2-3 screen bullet points

Introduction Project / Schedule

-Begin to imagine disruptive, serendipitous “impossible” event(s) of the next 10-25 years, including economic, political, technological, etc. conditions.

Thursday afternoon:

-Continue to imagine disruptive, serendipitous “impossible” event(s).Choose one.

-Portray in text and images (5-8 screens), the resulting unexpected future resulting from the intersection of conventional development with disruptive, serendipitous event(s).

Friday afternoon:

-”Look back from the future” and speculate how the envisioned future offers insight into current conditions. Create 3 or more text screens to itemize insights (add visuals as time permits).

-Presentation, Plenary Session (end of afternoon).
