Tourism as a Service Industry

The tourism industry, and the products and services that fall under its wide umbrella, are complex indeed. There are a number of features that make it unique.

Tourism is a subjective experience and an amalgam of products and services - not a single product

Tourism products, like all services, are intangible. A Harbour cruise, a stroll through a rainforest or a dinner at sunset are intangibles. They cannot be seen, touched, felt or sampled before purchase.

The selling of tourism is the selling of images. The Indian Tourist Commission in other countries does not sell tourism products; it sells what we may call a shifting generic image of India.

The tourism product is not a homogeneous product. We cannot standardize a service. Hotels attempt to standardize their room and service delivery as efficiently as possible through staff training and quality control procedures, but the human

Ingredient complicates the equation. As most services require interaction between the producer and consumer, each with their own set of expectations, it is highly unlikely that any product can ever be perceived equally by all customers. External factors can

Page 8: Horizon worldwide rajdeep

Page

8

also affect the tourist experience. A bumpy flight can spoil an overseas trip and rain can ruin a Coast stay.

Tourism products are perishable. An unsold Park Grand hotel room, an unused Aircraft seat and a vacant concert seat is revenue lost. They cannot be stored for later use, as can tangible products. Hence the prevalence of discounting in services exists.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYThe purpose of this Training is to provide trainee with valuable insights into the professional and industry-oriented side of tourism in practice. The main purpose of the study is to analyze as to what is the perception of the candidate for which the training is designed by Horizon Worldwide and Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management, that provides various product offerings like learning Outbound packages, Inbound packages, Domestic Packages, Visa etc. Horizon Worldwide is a big player in the travel and travel related services, this it has a wide customer base and these customers are likely to increase sales and bring in profits to the company by availing these beneficial services provided to them. As the competition is growing day by day, all the other companies are trying to match up with the level at what Horizon is today. The students of IITTM-TT 2014-2016

Page 9: Horizon worldwide rajdeep

Page

9

have been guided in the best possible manner to achieve the best learning in the best possible manner to achieve the best learning in the most streamlined form, advancing the knowledge base to the highest form.

The main objectives of this Training were understood as the primary learning and skills the trainee brought to his notice, there were times when things were difficult for the trainee but the environment and the motivation brought high hopes for the same.

To gain insight in product Sales and to understand about the working culture.

To develop necessary skills, knowledge and attitude required in the corporate/management.

Profession. To recognize capabilities and shoulder responsibilities as

a professional. To have a feel of the problems faced by the organization

and develop creative solutions. To gain deep understanding in specific functional areas. To recognize the linkages among different functions of a

business and develop realistic solutions. Managerial perspective about organization in totality. To increase knowledge about visa and passport services. To know about the working process. To increase efficiency in the tourism sector. To have a know-how of customer relationship

management. To have a professional exposure.

CONCLUSION

In review this training has been an excellent and rewarding experience I have been able to meet and network with so many people that I am sure will be able to help me with opportunities in the future. One main thing that I have learned through this training is time management skills as well as self-motivation.  When I first started I did not think that I was going to be able to make myself sit in an office for eight hours a day, five days a week.  Once I realized what I had to do I organized my day and work so that I was not overlapping or wasting my hours.  I learned that I needed to b organized and have questions ready for when it was the correct time to get feedback.  From this training and time management I had to learn how to myself through being in the office for so many hours.  I came up with various proposals and motivate ideas that the company is still looking into using. I am going to continue to work for company name. although I am still keeping my options open for new opportunities I will continue to work hard in my position and hope to continue to learn about the industry and meet new people.  This was an excellent experience and I hope that other interns got as much out of it as I did!
