More than 1,500 people gathered to celebrate Grand Valley State University’s accomplishments and honor four community leaders at the 2012 Enrichment Dinner, held on June 6 at DeVos Place in Grand Rapids. The theme, “Impressions,” focused on the collective impact that donors, alumni and current students have on the Grand Valley community.

At the event, the Grand Valley University Foundation inducted three new mem-bers into the Grand Valley Hall of Fame. J.C. Huizenga and Mike and Sue Jandernoa received the Enrichment Award. President Emeritus Arend D. Lubbers pre-sented Dr. Johnine Callahan with the Arend D. Lubbers Award for her dedication to the university over the years as a profes-sor and director of the Grand Valley Honors Program.

Jim and Donna Brooks, co-chairs of the GVU Foundation, emceed the evening and showed their appreciation for all that the Grand Valley community does to better the university.

“We hope that tonight you’ll reflect on, and celebrate, your role in the tremendous collective impression on the future that is made by Grand Valley, its students and its graduates as a result of your support and involvement with the university,” Jim said.

President Thomas J. Haas highlighted some of the many milestones that Grand Valley has reached in the past year.

“This academic year, we celebrated our largest graduating class ever with more than 5,000 graduates,” Haas said. “We are over 86,000 alumni strong, and on our way to 100,000 in 2015. We are so proud of them.”

Haas summed up Grand Valley in five words: rigor, relevance, return, relation-ships, reach.

Richard M. DeVos, general chairman of the GVU Foundation for the past 20 years, also addressed the crowd. He talked about the relationship between Grand Valley and the community.

“You are entering the zone when you come into Grand Valley, a zone of think-ing about service, about helping others and about being a bigger achiever yourself,” he said. “This is a college community, a univer-sity built by the people of this town. It’s our town, it’s our university even if you didn’t go there. It’s still yours. And when you par-ticipate in this group it becomes yours. So, thank you for being a player.”

J.C. Huizenga, an influential West Michigan businessman and Grand Valley leader, received the Enrichment Award, rec-ognizing his philanthropy and dedication to the university.

As the founder of National Heritage Academies and owner of several Michigan manufacturing enterprises, Huizenga has a strong passion for education and business. He has showed strong leadership in numerous campaigns for Grand Valley and established several scholarships to assist stu-dents in pursuing their dreams.

In the video played at Enrichment Dinner, recipi-ents of the J.C. Huizenga Business Scholarship thanked Huizenga for his generosity.

“Someone who is willing to help out college students who they don’t even know has got to be a great per-son,” Katherine Gillespie ’12, said.

Donna Brooks presented the Enrichment Award to Huizenga. “He leads, not necessarily by taking charge, but by being genuinely engaged in the well-being of others,” she said. Upon receiving the award, Huizenga said it was a spectacular honor to be recognized and a humbling experi-ence.

Of all Huizenga’s accomplishments, his great-est satisfaction is his relationship with his son, David.

“I hope that someday I’ll be able to grow up and make the same kind of impact that he’s had on the community and be able to carry on his legacy,” David said about his father in the video.

Recognized as both a competitive business leader and a humble philanthropist, Huizenga has a clear vision for the future.

“The greatest differences you can make in the world are not with the older generation, but the younger generation,” Huizenga said. “By investing ourselves into the lives of students, we are making a difference in the future.”

Honorees Michael J. and Susan JandernoaFor their continued support of

Grand Valley and commitment to West Michigan, Mike and Sue Jandernoa received the Enrichment Award. Mike’s dedication to business and technology and Sue’s passion for education and health make the couple a well-rounded and prominent force in the Grand Rapids community.

Mike, former CEO and chairman of Perrigo Pharmaceuticals, has founded Jandernoa Entrepreneurial Mentoring, which provides support for entrepre-neurs at every level.

Sue is a retired East Grand Rapids elementary school teacher and contin-ues her commitment to early childhood development and the importance of proper nutrition and health care for young children.

Mike and Sue are both generous in their support of Grand Valley. Mike is a foundation director and very involved in the Seidman College of Business and the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation; they have initiated a scholarship to specifically help student entrepreneurs follow their passions. Together, the Jandernoas’ passion for philanthropy and leadership has had a significant impact on the Grand Valley community.

Jim Brooks presented the Jandernoas with the Enrichment Award. “In every-thing they do they are both well-known for their dedication to West Michigan where they grew up, met and remained,” he said. “Their children and grandchildren have also settled in this community, giving them not only roots but branches here. They are tireless and incredibly generous with their time; they are both hard-working and vision-ary, and they make quite a team.”

Mike said that he supports Grand Valley because since the beginning, it has had a certain “entrepreneurial spir-it,” just like him.

“Grand Valley uses its entrepreneurial spirit to reach out and make an impact on higher education,” Mike said. “The

university makes sure that the graduates are prepared to work in the 21st century and in the jobs that are available.”

Sue recognized how important family is to them and said that Grand Valley and the education it provides has become a symbolic pillar of family in West Michigan.

“Nothing gives us more happi-ness than to be surrounded by our fam-ily and friends,” she said. “I think that this parallels how Mike and I feel about Grand Valley and the West Michigan

community; it is our extended family and we care about what happens here. We are filled with pride to be a part of it.”

Honoree Dr. Johnine CallahanJohnine Callahan, former professor

and director of the Grand Valley Honors Program, received the Arend D. Lubbers Award, which honors longtime Grand Valley faculty and staff members who excel in their service to the university and community.

Callahan started her career at Grand Valley in 1979 as an assistant professor of Health Sciences. In 1983, she became the director for the School of Health Sciences, and in 1989 she was promot-ed to professor of Health Sciences.

In 1990, Callahan was asked to direct the Grand Valley Honors Program where she spent the next 12 years implementing new and innovative pro-gramming for students of academic excellence. Her passion for higher education and vision for the future led to the development of the Glenn A. Niemeyer Living Center, a living and learning environment for honors stu-dents. The growth of the Frederick A. Meijer Honors College is largely due to Callahan’s commitment to Grand Valley.

President Emeritus Arend D. Lubbers presented Callahan with the award. “If you want to know why Grand Valley excels, begin by looking at Dr. Callahan’s career,” he said. “She began with 40 students and now she can bask in the accom-plishments of more than 1,000 students of the highest quality enrolled in the Meijer Honors College.”

Donna Brooks said that the Grand Valley University Foundation was thrilled to be able to recognize such an important person in Grand Valley’s

development. “As a former board mem-ber, I know just how hard our faculty and staff work to serve our students,” she said.

Gillett Society DinnerMembers of the Gillett Society held

a special dinner in May to honor and induct new members.

The society has welcomed more than 40 new members since 2009, bringing its total membership to 285. It was an occasion to celebrate and reflect how the society is helping to secure the uni-versity’s future through planned giving.

The Gillett Society is comprised of individuals who have made a lifetime

commitment to Grand Valley through planned gifts in their wills and estate plans.

Construction Update Both the Mary Idema Pew Library

Learning and Information Commons and L. William Seidman Center’s final steel beams have been set in place, and both are on track to open in 2013.

The construction tradition of “signing the beam” drew together faculty and

staff members, construction workers, students and the project’s lead donors to celebrate both construction mile-stones.

AWRI Campaign committee established

The committee to lead the cam-paign for the Robert B. Annis Water Resources Institute Field Station is estab-lished and the cam-paign for the new facility is about to begin. Chuck Johnson will serve as the honorary chair of the campaign; Mike Olthoff and Larry Hines will serve as co-chairs.

The 14,700-square-foot field sta-tion will allow the institute to sup-port West Michigan’s leadership in the blue economy, expanding research capabilities.
