Carrie

Carrie White is a teenager, at the age of 16. She is a student at school in America, and therefore is a regular American female. However she is unlike stereotypical teenagers, and this is what characterises her as the main subject in a horror movie. She is portrayed as an high school outcast, loathed, taunted and bullied by her fellow students. She is constantly scolded by her mother, Margaret White, an abusive, mentally ill and unstable religious fanatic. She is the domineering and insane. She thinks about almost everything, especially things to do with the female body and sex, is sinful. Margaret is an overweight and very ugly woman who always dresses in shapeless black clothing. The two main characters are women and they are perceived as vulnerable but also with powers that are unforeseen.

The Possession

Abyzou is a demon that takes over the the body of children, it has powers to possess and manipulate. It is evil and will kill human children. This is a stereotype of demons and evil characters in horror, the audience loathe them. They are strong and will do whatever it takes. Em Brenek is the child in which gets possessed by the demon. It is a common factor that the young innocent child is the one who gets the evil inside of them, this shows juxtaposition, good against evil. She is a sweet young female who the audience will like, at the beginning she seems vulnerable to what could happen, as an audience we know that the box is no good for her and could leave her in a dangerous position. Due to her being a sweet character we feel sorry for her and know that the possession is not her real self. The parents are stereotypical as they show concern for there child, but are also naive as to what is happening.

Insidious

Dalton Lambert is the main character focus in this horror, he is a vulnerable young boy and seems innocent, this is stereotypical of child characters in movies. It is also conventional of supernatural horrors that the innocent child is the one who has become lost in a realm called "The Further", a place inhabited by the tortured souls of the dead. Without his mental presence, Dalton's body appears comatose and spirits can use it to enter the physical world. Renai Lambert is the mother and is representing a domestic housewife who stays at home looking after her two children, in horror movies this type of character is portrayed to be naïve as to what is going on around them. The audience feel fear towards the weaker characters. The wife is also a significant character because they happen to see all abnormal activity that occurs in the house. Josh Lambert, the father, is portrayed as a strong character who has the willingness to takeover the possession. He is inferior and is not afraid to confront the demon, this shows courage and is a stereotypical male portrayal in horror movies.
