Mise-en-scene

Location – Where is the film set, how does the location look and what does it convey about the location you will need to consider the use of decor, colour and

Lighting – consider what is not lit as well as what is, often shadow is as important as the areas being lit, also the use of lighting colours being used?

Costume – Consider what is worn and the colour and what it connotes?

Props – What are used and why?

LOCATION – Both locations are in Los Angeles, California, USA. They look like normal houses, but to be honest inside they look creepy. In both houses is a lot of twisting corridors and the walls are pale, furnitures are dark. There is a lot of places lest the spirits may have hidden away, for example attic, a lot of wardrobes etc.LIGHTNING – corners are usually dark and it’s dark when something is going to happen and in crisis situation. There is a lot of shadows, so much that it even looks unnatural. In the falling action, when Dalton’s father gets in his dreams, there is a lot of dark red, what also shows suspence.COSTUME – main characters wear boirng, basic clothes without any interesting colours, like simple people in everyday life. Only medium wears more colourfull clothes, but that is not her job uniform. Ghosthunters wear their job uniforms (white shirts). Dalton wears his onesie,

TASK 2

James Wan’s “Insidious” and James Watkin’s “Woman in Black” are the horror movies. Contrary to appearances they have the same genre, but they are not the

same, that is obvious. They have a lot of similar things, but also diffrences.

Mostly actions in these two films are in two different eras. Insidious is in contemporaneity and the Witkin’s film is in 19th or 20th century. Consequently they have different locations and their clothes are different. The Woman in Black is in the old, elegant house in England. Characters wear more elegant clothes, which were done of beautiful fabric. That is characteristic fot those times. Insidious has set in two simple American houses in Los Angeles, even those hoses look like ours, setting took ages to set up. Characters have simple clothes, identical to ours. Props were used in different ways. Arthur has drawn conclusions on the grounds of old letters and drawings, which were founded in his house. Elise in Insidious and her crew used professional equipment to search for ghosts and demons; the main difference is that we don’t know Dark Marks backstory.

What about similies? So in horror movies is obvious that surrounding is usual dark and has cold temper as in these two movies as well, so in consequence the main characters setting was introduced the same. Sort of tragedy in both movies was very sensitive. The camera angles and techniques are very similar, in this case it’s required, because the biggest purpose of horror movies is to make people scared. There is a lot of POV, to make audience feel, that they are the part of the film. Obviously when it comes to camera techniques, mostly was used low angle, from main character’s point of view, to emphize that he is the victim; and from antagonist’s perspective was used high angle, to make him in Insidious and her in The Woman in Black look stronger. One interesting thing enchained me. That in both movies father and son are in the main plot. Both characters lived in danger in both movies. Anymore I noticed, that there is one detail, which is in my opinion important and it shows, emphizes the similes between this two horrors. I mean the moment in Insidious, that the rocking horse was moving by itself and was making characteristic noise for this type of films. Do you remember the moment when Arthur wanted to conjure the Woman in Black? In this scene was the rocking thing as well, but in this case it was a chair.

In both movies the mean purpose has been complied. They’ve made the audience scared, but obviously not whole audience. Everybody has different point of view of looking at the horror films. For one person the most important thing is the plot and for the different person – mise-en-scene. I

personally recognize, that both horrors have been made very good and it was pleasure for me to watch them.
