Woman In Black

James Watkins - 2012

CAMERA WORK• The camera work involved is close ups of the dolls and teapots, which helps show the narrative of the film as it is based around children and also shows the equilibrium of the film.• An establishing shot of the bedroom was used to show the location of which the film is taking place in.• Long shots of the little girls were shown so that the audience can see all the characters of which the current scene is about.• A shot showing the children jumping out of the window including the corner of the woman in blacks head showing in the side of the shot is shown at the end which shows the theme of the film as it is about her possessing children, also reflecting on the films genre.• A point of view shot is shown from what the children can see before they walk up to the window to jump out of it.

EDITING• The editing of this opening scene is continuously in a slowed down effect to emphasise a dramatic effect and create a dramatic suspense that something is going to happen and there is something that is being built up. Slow motion is a convention which is often used in horror films as it creates suspense.• There are no titles used in this opening scene.• There has been nondiegetic music edited to the background to create an eerie effect and to make the audience feel scared of what is going to happen as the music that has been put in builds suspense.

MISE-EN-SCENE• The location used in this opening sequence is the house of which the woman died in, and

is where the protagonist is to visit later on as this helps show the equilibrium of the film.• The iconography used is dolls, teapots and many other child toys, which help establish

the theme of the film .• Costumes worn are girly Victorian dresses which help show that it is based in a different

era. They are also childlike clothing and there is not any usual modern day clothing shown.• Lighting used is dull, grey and gloomy to represent the genre as it has connotations of

death.• Acting codes included are things such as the children standing on the toys, showing that

they have no control over what they are doing which also helps show the films equilibrium as that is a consistent thing that happens throughout the film.• Positioning shown is where the woman in black is stood in the corner of the room yet she

is not fully shown yet the children are shown to be looking in her direction and the corner of her face is shown stood over them by the end of the opening sequence. Other positioning is that the three girls are sat on the floor playing together.

USE OF SOUND• The sound used in the background of this clip is all

nondiegetic and is a creepy, eerie sounding piece of music which is used again throughout the film, every time the woman in black is possessing a child.• There is no voice over or dialogue used as there is no

speaking and just a constant use of music. This isn’t until the end of the sequence when you hear the mother screaming after the children have jumped out of the window. This is to represent that they have been killed , and sounds like screaming is a main convention of horror films.• There are also loud sounds at the end of the music after

the children are dead which gives it a dramatic effect as it shows what the woman in black is capable of doing.

REPRESENTATION OF CHARACTERS• The representation of characters shown only uses

children that are not to be seen again throughout the film as they were killed. The director has done this to give the film an obvious equilibrium and show what is to happen to many other children throughout the film.• The protagonist is not shown in this opening sequence,

however the location which he visits and what the house is based upon is where the scene is set in.• The antagonist, the woman in black, is only shown

slightly so the audience can have an insight of her. She is shown to be wearing dark clothing and as she goes by the name the woman in black, she is clearly connoted to represent death by the colour black. However as she is not fully shown in this scene, it has been done so that the audience can only have their imagination to know what she could possible look like when fully shown, which makes it more terrifying, showing the genre of the film.

CONCLUSION• The woman in black was a good film to chose to analyse

as it has many of the conventions used in a horror films. It also showed a good use of sounds such as eerie music, loud bangs and screams. The opening sequence also showed what the film is going to be about, without giving too much away but allowed it to be understanding for the audience. This is because it was a continuity sequence, and each shot followed up from the last to create a narrative and lead up to a climax. It helped with what I want to use for when I create my own opening sequence as there are many things I can take inspiration from, such as the dark colours, the music, the props and the character representation. However the opening sequence does not include titles, which would’ve helped, however the opening sequence was still useful and gave me enough ideas for my own film without them.
