Villains have changed over time as fear has changed. Originally the horror genre had fears of monsters hence the genre focused around this. As the years went by and things became less scary as a result of continuous exposure to the fear. As a result the villain and fear changed and the horror genre developed more to accompany the changes. The villain is the stereotypical fear of the sub-genre of the horror. It is a physical representation of the fear and therefore is represented in a way to show all of the fears.

Frankensteins Monster

• First appearance in Frankenstein (1931)• One of the most famous horror villains • Multiple remakes of the film, including Victor

Frankenstein in 2015• The fear has changed over time, originally it was

the monster but it has been increasingly changed to the psychological with the fear changing to be more towards Dr Frankenstein rather than his monster, Hence the most recent film being focused on the Doctor himself rather than his monster.

Frankensteins Monster Representation

• Disfigurement/Doesnt look human, stereotypical fear of monsters.

• Cuts and scarring, representation of pain and suffering a common fear.

• Bolt through neck, inhuman, a monster, The fear here is the unknown, not knowing what the creature is.

• The monster is always wearing dark clothing, Dark colours have connotations of evil.

• The monster is often shown at night or in darkness, the darkness again has connotations of evil. Also they are playing on the fear of the dark and therefore representing the monsters of the dark and what could be in it, through this character.

• The creation of the monster takes place in a lightning storm. Lightning and thunder storms are a common fear and therefore represent this character and foreshadow that it will be something to be feared and is evil

Page 6: Horror villains

• The character is represented to look normal in often smart victorian atire to go with the era that it is set in. However the colours the character wears are dark with a lot of black, this has connotations of evil

• The character is made to look ordinary which goes along with the psycho fear that an everyday normal person could be evil and cause suffering

• The character is increasingly shown in darkness throughout the film, this represents his decent into madness and the evil growing inside of him to create the monster

• The facial expressions often show madness with the character being wide eyed and often not calm and collected.
