Tracy Fenney couldn’t have had a better week inOcala to start off the rated circuit. After an impres-sive victory in Thursday’s $25,000 SmartPak Grand

Prix aboard MTM Farm’s MTMTimon, she celebrated herbirthday on Sunday with a first and second place finish inthe Feb. 5 $50,000 EMO Grand Prix, on MTM Farm’sMTM Centano and MTM Timon, respectively.“What a great week,” said Fenney of FlowerMound,Texas.

“This is our first week back and I couldn’t have asked for abetter start. Today’s weather was gorgeous, the horses arehappy and winning on yourbirthday is always fun.”Fenney’s husband and

Grand Prix veteran MikeMcCormick was all smilesas he led MTMTimon in fora group photo.“We’re always happy to be

back in Ocala for the winterand this is one of the beststarts we’ve ever had,” hesaid. “I’m looking forwardto the rest of the year.”Sunday’s course was de-

signed by Tim Hott of Cum-ming, Iowa, and the eventfeatured 28 competitors. Afterthe first round, only four clearrounds returned for a jump-offas Erynn Ballard of Totten-ham,Ont., aboard LookingBack Farm’sRobinVanRoosendaeland Taylor McMurtry of Barrington Hills, Ill., in the irons ofher own JustAn Illusion, joined Fenney’s two mounts.Ballard and Robin Van Roosendael were the first to

challenge the jump-off course and set the pace at 52.406seconds but had four faults.

Fenney and MTM Timon were next and were en route toa clear effort until a rail came down at the last fence. The pairfinished the course in 48.176 seconds to take over the lead.McMurtry, now a professional at Thinkslikeahorse with

head trainer Aaron Vale, was the next to return aboard JustAn Illusion. Last year, the duo won their very first GrandPrix together in the $50,000 EMO Grand Prix, and hopedthat history would repeat itself again this year. Coming off afifth place finish in Thursday’s Grand Prix, the duo took thefield and had an impressive outing. Unfortunately, the secondto last fence came down and McMurtry finished in fourthwith a time of 53.488 seconds.“This was a great week,” said McMurtry, 19, one of the

youngest professionals in the field. “My horse loves to showhere and he’s usually just as excited as I amwhen we do well.I won the first week last year so I was hoping this would be-come my tradition, but two ribbons in the same week is agreat start! I’m glad Tracy [Fenney] got to win on her birth-day – she’s one of the best.”As Fenney already had the win secured, she returned for

her second ride aboardMTMCentano and the crowd cheeredas she posted the only double-clear effort of the group in45.927 seconds for the win.“Today’s class was pretty hard,” Fenney admitted. “There

were a lot clear and I thought Thursday’s class was a techni-cal course, but Tim [Hott] certainly built a big, technicalcourse today. There were a lot of tight, inside turns to somebig verticals. I think we ended up with a good jump-offthough.”Fenney remains a crowd favorite at HITS Ocala. “I’m a

big fan of Tracy [Fenney],” said E. Sue Bopp of EMO. “Iwas telling her as we took our presentation photo, asidefrom last year, I can’t remember a time when she hasn’tbeen standing there with me as the winner. This is some ofthe best weather we’ve ever had here and we’re alwaysthrilled to be a part of this show.”Fenney, a Pfizer Million alumnus, plans to make her third

appearance in the annual event.“I’ve finished up well the last two years in the [Pfizer] Mil-

lion and I even competed in the [Diamond Mills] $500,000Hunter Prix [Final] last year, so it’s safe to say we’ll be try-ing again this year,” Fenney added.Ballard finished the class in third place, while Hugh Gra-

ham of Reddick, Fla., and Distant Star 3E finished fifth withthe fastest four-fault score from the first round.

FENNEY AND MTM TIMON START WITH A WIN IN THE$25,000 SMARTPAK GRAND PRIXFenney got her momentum going earlier in the first week

of rated competition with a win on Feb. 2 in the first $25,000SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, aboard MTM Farm’s MTMTimon.“I was pretty nervous. It’s been two or three months since

we’ve showed and I wasn’t sure howwe’d be our first day backto work,” said Fenney after the class. “I’m lucky, Timon al-ways jumps great and in the past year he’s really learned howto go fast and turn better which really helped us out today.”

Thirty-two unique horse-and-rider combinations got in onthe action to challenge Tim Hott’s first-round course. Thir-teen jumping efforts included a double combination at fencefour and a triple at fence nine, but the majority of downedrails came at fence 10 and beyond. Thirteen pairs conqueredthe initial course to advance to a six-effort jump-off and thetop five all boasted double-clear rounds at the completion ofthe class.Fenney entered the ring in the middle of the jump-off pack

to post a clear round in 35.059 seconds and establish the timeto beat. Not one of the six remaining riders was able to catchher, however, and she and MTMTimon stayed in first place.“Tim [Hott] did a nice job with the course. It was tricky in

a few spots and I’m sure there were more clean than he hadwanted in the first round, but it was a perfect set for the open-

ing week. I didn’t get to see the horses that went before mein the jump-off since I had a horse in the 6-year-old jumpers,so I really didn’t get to see how they went or what waschanged. It probably worked out better because I was able tojust focus on my horse and let him do his thing. We tight-ened up the turns in a few spots and he galloped really well, which made the difference for us today,” said Fenny, who willbe in Ocala for the circuit with her sights set on making itback to the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix in September.Second to ride in the jump-off was Callan Solem of Glen-

moore, Pa., on one of twomounts. She rodeTorlando Group’sVDL Torlando early in the jump-off to secure second placewith a clear round in 36.474 seconds. Solemwas two-for-twoin the top five as she andMagic Cruise, owned by HorseshoeTrail Farm, rode clear in 37.010 seconds for third place.Rounding out the top five in the class were Mark Jungherr

of Amesbury, Mass., in the irons of Starlite Farm’sColourline, who posted a second round time of 38.068 sec-onds with no faults in fourth and Taylor McMurtry aboardJust An Illusion in fifth, respectively.By winning the first Pfizer Million qualifiers of the rated

circuit at HITS Ocala, Fenney is well on her way to findinga spot in this year’s return of the world’s richest class. Fenneyand MTM Timon are no stranger to Pfizer Million glory asthe pair posted top 20 finishes in both the 2010 and 2011 of-ferings of the class. To make an appearance in the 2012 Pfizer Million, riders

will need to bank eight qualifying classes to become eligible. Then the top 40 riders, based on money won on their leadinghorse, will earn their spot in the line-up for the class.

Ferrell, USET Team Physician and FEI Med-ical Committee Chair, and LyndseyWhite andChad Mendell of Riders4Helmets, who were

joined by a host of expertsfrom various corners of theequestrian world. While disci-plines ranging from showjump-ing to barrel racing and evenmounted shooting were repre-sented, every attendee had onecommon goal: to keep eques-trians as safe as possible whileparticipating in equestrian re-lated activities. In addition tothe symposium attendees, morethan 200 people around theglobe tuned in to watch thespeakers’ presentations via livestreaming video.

“We are delighted that the symposiums con-tinue to bring together so many experts underone roof, and we will continue to hold themso long as they are deemed to have value andeducate equestrians on why wearing a helmetis a smart thing to do,” said White. “We havesome exciting things planned for the campaignin 2012 including the third annual Interna-tional Helmet Awareness Day, a fourth SafetySymposium and a continuance of the “Eques-trian Helmet Hero Awards.”Videos on demand will shortly be available

who remained in a coma for a month follow-

ing her accident, was not wearing a helmet at
