Graduates from this dynamic and exciting program learn the following:

• Principles of botany

• Principles of soils, amendments and fertilizer use

• Interior plants, edible and ornamental plants

• Propagation, production and growing of plants

• Seasonal maintenance of plants and gardens

• Pruning, planting and transplanting techniques

• Plant health and pesticide use

• Interpretation of landscape plans and specifications

• Landscape design

• Maintenance and operation of machinery and equipment

• Installation and maintenance of lawns

• Garden centre operations and sales

• Greenhouse operations

• Health and safety in the workplace

This program will be offered at:• Huntingdon Adult Education and Community Centre

The Horticulture and Garden Centre Operations programprepares students to work as horticulturists for public orprivate organizations that may lead to a job in:

• Park management, maintaining green spaces, gardens and golfcourses, propagating plants as well as installing flower beds, massplantings, mosaics, containers and other floral displays. This work alsoconsists of preparing soils; seeding, planting, preparing and applyingplant protection products.

• This course may also lead you to work with horticultural consulting firmsor in specialized garden centres. In the retail industry, it involves workingas sales consultants; maintaining outdoor and indoor plants; monitoringand maintaining designated sales areas (annuals, perennials, shrubs,etc.); selling horticultural products or referring customers to specialists;and participating in general retail operations, such as inventory control,sales monitoring and customer needs analysis.
