Message from the President

Sandy Mathies, PresidentB.C. Landscape & Nursery Association

Challenges drive change and change brings its own challenges. Your BCLNA office has struggled for years with an obsolete computer operating system

and an antiquated phone system and those have now been replaced and updated. But the transition was not the smoothest and was not without its frustrations for members and staff. It has left some members, the Association’s reason for existing, feeling left out in the cold. I apologize on behalf of everyone on the board and all the staff for any missed calls, any emails that have disappeared into cyberspace and for not being able to

provide the level of service all members deserve. We thank you for your patience and your loyalty as we overcome what should have been a simple technology implementation plan.

On a more positive note, the CanWest Hort Show was visually stunning and the crowd was in a buying mood despite what they had to survive last spring. The outdoor equipment show at Tradex in Abbotsford was a fantastic display of new machines tailored to our industry. I had a great time testing one machine against another. A big thank you to all the people and companies that participated in the shows and a huge round of applause to the staff and many volunteers that made both of these shows possible.

I would also like to congratulate the newest members of your BCLNA board on offering their time and skills for the betterment of our industry and a warm thank you to for their efforts to the retiring board members. We have many challenges facing our industry and I am glad that we have a talented and dedicated group shepherding our industry into the future. Please enjoy the Christmas and holiday season with your families as the business of spring will soon be upon us.

For this first-time visitor, the CanWest Hort Show was a visual feast. I knew to expect plants and flowers, of course, but I was unprepared for the dramatic impact they would have in the cavernous Vancouver Convention Centre. Very few trade shows are so full of life and colour.

It was also great to see that very few, if any, exhibitors broke the cardinal trade show rule: don’t sit down behind a skirted table. All the booths I saw used a more welcoming, open design that encouraged attendees to walk through the booths and speak to exhibitors.

CanWest’s Wild West theme was wholeheartedly embraced by exhibitors: from the full-scale saloon, complete with can-can girls, which won Kato’s Nursery

so many awards, to smaller, but no less detailed efforts, like the succulents and blooms Bock Nurseries placed carefully between the spokes of a wagon wheel.

Many exhibitors were at the convention centre until the wee hours on move-in

day setting up their elaborate displays. I overheard one exhibitor explaining how he had been up late carefully burning the edges of his booth’s posters to give them that authentic, old-timey look.

Also on display in various booths were vultures, cattle skulls, horses, desperados, outhouses, a shooting gallery, saddles, lanterns—a panoply of Western paraphernalia.

As someone who is connected to the horticulture industry only because I edit HortWest, it was a privilege to get an insider’s view of the CanWest Hort Show.

Beyond Trade: Hort Show Offers Education & Equipment

BCLNA News Bulletins

The 2011 CanWest Hort Show offered much more beyond the two-day trade show. There were garden tours, over 15 educational seminars, workshops and pre-show clinics, the Urban Forester’s Symposium, as well as the Equipment Demo Day at the Tradex Convention Centre in Abbotsford.

HortWest popped into several seminars to sample the educational offerings and also visited the Equipment Demo Day.Presenter Beth Edney, an award-winning landscape designer, educator, speaker and owner of Designs by the Yard in Toronto, offered tips for visually widening long narrow gardens in her seminar, Creative Ideas for Small Spaces. She also offered up some business advice to the approximately 50 delegates in attendance. She highly recommends charging for consultations, she says she uses the fee to “weed out the tire kickers.”

Ed Beaulieu, of Aquascape Inc., from Illinois offered up fascinating facts and figures in his seminar, Sustainable Water Management Techniques. A one-inch rainfall on the average home results in 3,800 gallons of run-off, mostly from the roof and also from the lawn, yard and paved surfaces, he said. “Huge amounts of water are turned into run-off.” Beaulieu told participants how to reduce run-off using solutions such as permeable pavers, diverting rain from the roof to underground rain exchange systems, and using native plantings. “If we follow nature’s lead, we can’t go wrong.”

At the Equipment Demo Day, attendees could try out the latest outdoor and power equipment, including backhoes, trimmers and trenchers. A sign for “environmentally friendly fuel,” also stood out at Consolidated Equipment’s booth. It’s an alkylate fuel, which Consolidated's owner Mike Acres explained gives off 40 per cent less greenhouse gases than regular fuel. It’s ideal for any two-stroke engine. Acres said there is growing interest in Canada in the clean-burning fuel, which has been in use in Europe for over 20 years. Watch for another strong educational program at CanWest 2012 on Sept. 19 to 20, 2012, and the return of the Equipment Demo Day to Tradex.

Bylands is International Grower of Year It’s been a year of accolades for Kelowna-based Bylands Nurseries Ltd. with its most recent win as International Grower of the Year. The award was presented during the 63st Annual Congress of the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH), held in Xi'an, China, in September. Six grower candidates from six countries were nominated for the award. Candidates were judged on four main criteria including economic performance, sustainable business strategy (including social responsibility), innovation and overall company image.

Judges were impressed with Bylands’ strong financial position and its diverse offering of hardy plants, as well as its marketing strategy. Judges also noted Bylands’ environmental efforts, including plastic pot recycling and use of drip irrigation technology and water recycling methods to reduce total water consumption. “It was a great honour to receive this award, especially as this is the first year for Canada’s participation,” said

John Byland, Bylands President.

Bylands was the winner of the 2010 BCLNA Grower of the Year Award and the 2011 national RBC Grower of the Year award, which gained the company an automatic entry into the international award contest.

John, Maria, Mike and Melanie Byland accept the International Grower of the Year award in Xi'an, China.

Awarding Experience at President’s Banquet

BCLNA News Bulletins

The President’s Banquet and Awards Party held this year as part of the CanWest Hort Show was a time to celebrate the achievements of the people and organizations that represent excellence in the industry. The following awards were presented at the banquet.

Member of the Year

Michael Kato, Kato’s Nursery (2007) Ltd.Sponsor: Northwest Landscape & Stone Supply

Michael literally grew up in the nursery. There was a playpen in the greenhouse and a jolly-jumper in the barn to keep him occupied while his parents, George and Sarah, managed the nursery.

Michael joined the BCLNA board 30 years later and over the past 10 years

has volunteered countless hours in so many areas including the Special Events Committee which is responsible for the fundraising auction, golf tournament and AGM. He serves as the BCLNA rep to the CNLA and he is also part of the national p. Ramorum Task Force.

Michael feels that volunteering is a great way to support the industry or whatever cause that is important to you. He says you can definitely get more out of it than what you put in. He has also enjoyed meeting and working with like-minded people.

Young Member of the Year Miles Hunter, David Hunter Garden CentreSponsor: Van Belle Nursery Inc.

Miles works alongside his father in the family business. David Hunter Garden Centre has been a member since BCLNA was founded in 1956.

Miles currently serves on the Retail Advisory, CanWest, Membership and Green For Life Committees. He also belongs to Shelfspace (formerly Retail BC), The Garden Centre Group, Blackcomb Ski Patrol (as a volunteer) and Whistler Weasel Workers.

Miles also volunteered on the 2008 International Garden Centre Association Congress.

He believes that volunteering helps give back to the industry and community. He has volunteered with many different organizations throughout his life in an attempt to give something back to the activities and interests that he has gained so much from.

Within the horticulture industry, volunteering has helped him gain a broader perspective on the industry and the various commodity groups that contribute to making the horticulture industry work.

Miles looks forward to working with and contributing to the BCLNA in the many years ahead in the horticulture industry.

Grower of the Year Qualitree Propagators Inc. Sponsor: HisTREE.net

The BCLNA Grower of the Year Award is presented to the nursery that demonstrates innovative environmental stewardship standards, innovative marketing techniques, excellence in production methods, excellence in nursery production standards, and involvement in the industry. This year’s nominees were significant in that all understand the important balance of presentation and production. There was only a slight margin between second place and the winner.

“We all are winners when companies like these are members of our industry – they set the bar higher, and show us how every nursery has the ability to adapt and innovate to build a better business,” said Tim Loewen, BCLNA First Vice-president, when presenting the award.

Pan American Nursery Products Inc. of Surrey showed a stellar performance in marketing innovation and product line innovation. Stewart Bros Nurseries of Kelowna provided a very convincing picture of good production techniques and excellent human resource components. The winner, Qualitree Propagators Inc. of Chilliwack, showed high standards of production and innovation in production methods and marketing.

Qualitree started in 1994 when founding partners Gary Neels and Tony Van Oort decided to put the hypothetical business they had created for their horticulture studies into practice. Qualitree is now run by a partnership of Van Oort, Neels, Henk Rozendaal, Gerrit Rozendaal,

and Willem Neels. The company is committed to quality to the point that Van Oort says staff would speak out if the company tried to sell a less than quality product. “We would rather throw a year’s profit in the bin than ship something that is sub-standard,” said Van Oort in an interview. Read more about Qualitree in the next issue of HortWest.

Supplier of the Year HUB International Insurance BrokersSponsor: Inline Nurseries Inc.

HUB has been a BCLNA member for over 20 years. In addition to serving as insurance providers to our members, Melanie Stefiuk, on behalf of HUB, volunteers on our Special Events Committee. HUB offers specially designed programs for landscapers, nursery operators, garden product wholesaler and retailer operations, with discounted rates for BCLNA members. Comprehensive coverage is available for property, liability, machinery breakdown, crime and business interruption.

Educator of the Year Anne Kadwell, President & CEO of HortEducation BCSponsor: TerraLink Horticulture Inc.

Anne has been a BCLNA member for the past five years and also belongs to several other associations, including the CNLA, the Canadian Society of Association Executives and the BC Recreation and Parks Association.

She is also involved in the development of the RED SEAL Landscape Horticulture exam bank and launch of the IP exam in B.C.

She also finds time to educate elementary and secondary school students about careers in horticulture and apprenticeships. Anne’s philosophy of education is: Make the most of every teaching opportunity—embrace it!

Garden Communicator of the Year Mike Lascelle, Amsterdam Greenhouses Ltd.Sponsor: Clearview Horticultural Products

Mike has been in the industry for 25 years, including 12 years with Sierra Landscaping and 13 years with Amsterdam Greenhouses Ltd. as nursery manager.

Corporate Award Broadway Tech CentreSponsor: Schmunk Gatt Smith & Associates

The Corporate Award honors corporations, developers, or municipalities that the BCLNA believes have demonstrated a commitment to quality landscape development. This award is presented to recipients that have made a significant contribution to the quality of our shared environment, either regionally or nationally. Broadway Tech Centre wanted to create a pedestrian friendly campus experience with extensively landscaped, serene external

spaces while providing wide recreational opportunities for their tenants, green landscapes for the community and increased biomass for the environment. They achieved this by accommodating the tech centre’s parking needs underground and with the extensive use of green rooftops, which house sports courts and plaza areas. Amenities such as café patios with seating, entrance plazas, sport courts, parks and park benches provide both active and passive recreation opportunities for tenants.

Water features create visual delight and white sound to mitigate traffic noise from Broadway. Large canopy trees shade portions of the hardscape and provide green corridors through the site.

Bentall Kennedy aims to preserve ecological integrity, enhance diversity, and protect wildlife while supporting building performance and integration of surrounding landscape by encouraging ground and site management practices that have the lowest environmental impact possible.

Brian Minter named UFV ChancellorCanadian gardening icon and BCLNA member, Dr. Brian Minter, has been reappointed to a second three-year term as Chancellor of the University of the Fraser Valley.

A recipient of the Order of Canada and the BC Small Business Excellence award, Dr. Minter is co-owner, with his wife, Faye, of Minter Gardens, a 27-acre show garden and garden centre in Chilliwack. He is well known from his magazine and syndicated newspaper columns, TV and radio programs and his best-selling gardening book.

"I'm both honoured and humbled to have been given the opportunity to serve a second term as Chancellor," Minter said. "I'm very fond of UFV, and it plays a big role in my life." Minter served as UFV's first Chancellor starting in 2008.
