Spread over 350 acres lush green area, the Institute is located on

Delhi-Hissar-Sirsa-Fazilka National Highway 10 (NH10). Institute is located

at a distance of 70 km from Delhi and 384 Km from Chandigarh. It is one

of the oldest medical institutes in North India and the only post graduate

institute of medical sciences in the state of Haryana. The Institute started

as Govt. Medical College way back in 1960 in Patiala and later shifted to

Rohtak in 1963. In 1994 college was upgraded to the level of post graduate

institute and subsequently named as Pt. B.D. Sharma PG Institute of

Medical Sciences. Institute’s medical set up comprises of a Medical College,

a Dental College, college of Nursing, Regional Cancer Centre,

Superspecialty Centre, Regional Institute of Ophthalmology and a college

of Pharmacy. The Institute is supported by a 1266 bedded hospital and has

299 competent faculties. Institute has a well stacked library with 42513

books. Library has subscription for 163 international medical journals and

42 Indian journals. Institute is fully residential with accommodation available

for faculty, staff and students. Facility for teleconferencing is available

through a well equipped Telemedicine Facility. Institute also provides

training to Radiographers, Technicians and Nurses from Uttaranchal Govt.

hospitals under Uttaranchal Health Systems Development Project. Institute

has been credited for performing some of the rarest pediatric, orthopedic,

cardiothoracic, ocular and gastrointestinal surgeries and has earned fame

among tertiary care centers. Institute has a rich and conducive environment

for academic learning and clinical research. Institute offers tremendous

opportunities for healthy interdepartmental collaboration in clinical and

investigative modalities. Institute also provides medical training to in-

service doctors serving in State Govt. Hospitals.

ACADEMIC SETUP

Institute has 26 Academic Departments comprising of both

clinical, surgical and preclinical disciplines. Institute runs MBBS, BDS,

B.Sc. (Nursing), MD, MS, MDS, PhD and undergraduate as well as

Post Graduate Diploma courses. Academic programs of the institute

are affiliated to Maharishi Dayanad University, Rohtak. The institute

is also recognized for the award of DNB. Institute each year admits

PATIENT CAREA total of 12, 33,541 patients were provided treatment and

consultation in the outpatient departments during the year gone by with

an average daily OPD attendance of 4116. 73,040 patients availed of

indoor treatment facilities. The upgraded accidents and emergency

department attended to 1,57,199 patients during last year. 1,17,265

surgeries were performed by different surgical specialties during 2006.

The bed occupancy of the hospital was 96.17% during the year. The

artificial limb centre provided 2232 appliances to different beneficiaries

in the current year.

150 students for MBBS course, 60 students in BDS, 60 in B.Sc.

(Nursing), 60 in diploma in pharmacy, 15 in Ophthalmic Assistant diploma and

15 students in Radiography course. Institute has 12 seats for MD course in

General Medicine, 5 seats in Pediatrics, 6 in Obstetrics and gynecology, 3 in

Pharmacology, 2 in Dermatology, veneraology and leprosy, 2 in Microbiology,

5 in Anesthesiology, 2 in Tuberculosis and Respiratory Medicine, 3 in Radio-

diagnosis, 2 in Physiology, 4 in Biochemistry, 6 in Pathology, 3 seats in

community medicine, 2 in Radiotherapy, 2 in Psychiatry and one seat in

Forensic medicine. Among surgical disciplines institute has 12 seats in

General Surgery, 4 in Ophthalmology, 6 in Orthopedics, 3 in

Otorhinolaryngology and 2 seats in Anatomy.

Institute has a structured and organized teaching and learning schedule

for undergraduate and post-graduate students. A systematic undergraduate

teaching is offered in anatomy through hands on training on dissecting human

bodies with a fairly small student: dissecting material ratio. Anatomical

museum of the college provide additional learning material and thorough

teaching and revision exercises. Methods of interactive teaching are being

experimented for undergraduate teaching to make teaching more stimulating

and satisfying. Good facilities are available in Experimental Physiology,

Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology and Pharmacology, providing

opportunities to build a strong base in initial years of undergraduate learning.

Institute has taken initiative to update students in recent advances in Human

Molecular Biology and molecular analysis of diseases and emerging

sophistication in medical biotechnology. A systematic program to face

newer challenges of new age medical teaching and practical interactive

learning is being worked out. Institute has great opportunities for

postgraduate training as well with great accessibility to practical real

treatment situations and heavy patient dealing. Richly equipped

laboratories and great heterogeneity of clinical material, makes PGIMS

Rohtak an ideal school for academic-medical learning and clinical

research. Post Graduate medical students carry out thesis work in a

range of basic, para-clinical and clinical research topics.

SPORTS, RECREATION & STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES

Institute has excellent facilities for sports and recreation activities.

Students participate in sport, athletic and literary events at state and

national level and win prizes for the college. Students run a Literary and

Magazine Club (LAM) and organize number of cultural events over the

year. Notable Events include annual college festival- Spardha, Annual

sports and athletic meet, Art Exhibition, Creative Writing, Literary and

Poetry recital. Resident Doctors Association (RDA) organizes Dewali

Mela every year. Meritorious students are honored with Gold, Silver and

Bronze medals for best academic performances in respective clinical and

preclinical subjects at the occasion of institute convocation.

Metamorphosis- is PGIMS community development programme aimed at

enhancing cultural and social interaction and catalyzing academic growth

among PGIMS community, staff and students. Institute aims to become

first choice for students aspiring for medical education and research in

the country.

Micro-dermabrasion, cautery, peeling, grafting, and skin biopsy, facilities for

cytopathology, Artificial limb centre, Real-Time PCR, Luminometer (robotic

Immunoassayer), well equipped Telemedicine facility comprising of modern

multimedia projection and video conferencing systems along with facilities

for digital microscopy and digital echo-cardiography, Advanced

physiotherapy machines. Institute is equipped for routine and emergency

laboratory facilities for Histopathology, Microbiological and Biochemical

investigations. Many new machines and facilities like electron and LASER

confocal microscope, DNA sequencer, 64-slice spiral CT and sophisticated

biotechnology research equipments are coming up.

Procedure in the Urology Department

Institute health care setup comprises of institute Hospital, a

dental hospital, specialty recovery wards, operation theaters,

specialized clinics, intensive care units (ICUs), super specialty block, a

deaddiction centre, physiotherapy and artificial limb centre, accidents and

emergency, emergency laboratory services, psychological counseling,

community medicine outreach and a 24 Hrs Help line services. In

addition, institute contributes in intensified pulse polio programme,

reproductive and child health programme, national programme for the

prevention of blindness and HIV/AIDS surveillance and National

Tuberculosis Programme. Institute premises also houses office of the

Coordinator, State Child Development Programme and Malaria Control

and Eradication Programme, Integrated Disease Surveillance Project,
