Description:
Stefan Mühle is General Manager of The Orchard Garden Hotel in San Francisco where he assumed his duties in 2001. And in 2006, Stefan and his team, opened the new $25 million Orchard Garden Hotel, sister property to the Orchard Hotel in San Francisco. These two hotels are two of San Francisco's first LEED-EB (existing building) and LEED-NC (new construction) certified hotels. Stefan says that Kermit got it wrong! Being green IS easy. Maybe Stefan just makes it look that way, but he is "raving fan" for building, converting and operating LEED-certified hotels. This presentation is a successful case study in green hotel development and conversion. Stefan can be reached at [email protected] or (415) 365-0306. See also www.theorchardhotels.com.This is his PowerPoint presentation at The Hotel Developers Conference™ 2008, March 11-13, 2008 (see www.jmbm.com/thdc) providing a description of his two properties in San Francisco and some of the key facts about them. Stefan can be reached at [email protected] or (415) 365-0306. See also www.theorchardhotels.com.For the past five years, the Global Hospitality Group® of Jeffer Mangels Butler and Marmaro LLP has presented The Hotel Developers Conference™. Each year, this high level conference focuses on a current, cutting-edge issues such as resort development, condo hotels, and hotel mixed-use. In 2008, the conference, supported by UNLV and the USGBC, Nevada chapter, was devoted solely to green hotel development, renovation and operation. Just as hotel prototypes evolve from Generation 1 (or "Gen 1") to Generation 2 ("Gen 2") and beyond, hotel conferences on sustainability to date (the "Gen 1" conferences) have typically included only a panel or two on sustainability -- and have been limited to covering why the industry should consider going green, or what "green" really means. The Hotel Developers Conference™ 2008 set the standard for "Gen 2" of hotel conferences on sustainability. California's First LEED Certified Hotel

OPENING 2006

San Francisco's Orchard Garden Hotel, California's first hotel built to the nationally accepted standards for green buildings developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, is slated to open on November, 2006. As the sister property to the award-winning Orchard Hotel, the 86-room boutique hotel is located in the heart of San Francisco - just one block from Union Square, steps away from the Chinatown'sGates and around the corner from the Financial District - making it a perfect neighborhood for both business and leisure travelers.

The Orchard Garden's intimate, residential style combines graceful luxury with state-of-the-art design. Guests are sure to enjoy the rich décor of the entryway and lobby, complemented by works of locally renowned artists.

The exterior design of the new 86 room Orchard Garden Hotel reinforces the architectural language of its historic urban neighbors and respects the scale of the neighborhood. The 10-story in-fill building, steps back at the eighth level creating a terrace for guestroom suites and at the roof level provides a public outdoor garden. The façade is organized in the traditional manner of San Francisco buildings with a distinct stone base, a middle zone and a top. Although exterior features, such as the projecting cornices, are traditional expressions, the building is modern in appearance with large windows that fill the hotel with natural light.

As part of a Public Art Program, a unique and welcoming front door has been created through a collaboration with the architects, and with the prominent Bay Area artist, Archie Held, who also created the sculptural balconies and a marquee in glass and bronze.

The hotel lobby, which features additional bronze pieces by the artist, includes a restaurant and bar. The lobby along with other hotel amenities including a Business Center, Fitness Center, and a Meeting Room will offer a fresh contribution to the Bush Street neighborhood street life.

The interior design of the new Orchard Garden Hotel is designed to provide a fresh, simple and elegant environment for guests to relax and rejuvenate during their stay in San Francisco. Although the materials are traditional, the atmosphere is contemporary and features mirrored walls and modern chandeliers. Throughout the hotel a signature palette of green, white and gold is set off against a background of classical golden limestone floors and maple wood with bronze accents.

Archie Held’s beautiful water sculpture is used for the transition from the entrance into the lobby. The hotel’s leaf motive are reinterpreted into a beautiful contemporary bronze screenthat is a shared feature between the hotel and the restaurant.

In the guestrooms the contemporary maple wood furniture is custom designed and features a long desk with an art shelf above in all rooms. Sliding wood and mirrored doors lead to a spa like bathroom. The inviting colors and materials reflect the pure cleaning materials and the 100% washable bedding (including decorative coverlet) that assures a fresh and healthy preparation of the room for each arriving guest.

Luna Textiles Creates Sustainable Solutions for the Orchard Garden Hotel

With sustainability as a company focus, Luna Textiles was selected to provide textiles for the Orchard Garden Hotel. The San Francisco based company was contacted by Architecture International to collaborate with them in designing fabrics made from recycled content and priced to meet the hotel's budget.

It was important to the designers to create a “green” hotel and to design a beautiful and welcoming space for guests.

“From our point of view, the opportunity to create a green hotel environment would, by its nature, enhance the beauty and appeal of the hotel,” notes designer Sherry Caplan. “The sophisticated patterns and color palettes of the textiles, the materials they are made of, and how they are made, all become an inherent part of our ability to design an elegant environment for guests.

Luna developed drapery, sheers, upholstery, coverlets and shower curtains for each of the 86 guest rooms in soothing, spa-inspired tones. The drapes feature the pattern Redondo in a soft caramel color, which consists of 53% recycled polyester and 47% Avora FR. The textured white shower curtains are made from Luna’s Maxi Hammered Metal fabric, constructed of 86% recycled polyester and 14% polyester. The green tea hued coverlets are made from 49% recycled polyester and 51% Avora FR as well, in addition to being machine washable to avoid the use of chemicals found in dry cleaning.

With an extensive product offering and a commitment to sustainable business practices, Bentley Prince Street worked closely with the design team to collaborate on the style and coloration of carpets for the hotel guest rooms, hotel corridors and the main lobby areas. In addition to providing the right design solution for the Orchard Garden Hotel, these products contributed one LEED point to the Materials and Resource category for manufacturing within the 500 mile radius of the project site.

Custom colored in shades of green, the modern leaf pattern of Tasoni, from Bentley Prince Street’s Rimini Collection, was used throughout the hotel’s guest rooms and corridors. One of Bentley Prince Street’s newest styles from the Urban Tribe Collection, called Social Network was developed for the lobby and dining area. Social Network’s intricacy in construction blends the foreground of a traditional leaf pattern with the background of a dynamic collection of varying stripes.

Collaboration of Art & Architecture

Works of Sculpture by Archie Held

The Orchard Garden Hotel proudly supports local artists such as Archie Held, whose work had been commissioned for both the hotel’s exterior and the hotel’s interior. From the exterior, you see the signature bronze marquee, Juliette balconies, and elegant door handles. As you enter the interior through the lobby, a contemporary bronze and glass water sculpture greets you at the entrance.Elegant bronze screens, an interpretation of the hotel’s logo, are showcased as you move between the lobby and restaurant.

Works on Paper Works on paper are displayed throughout the hotel including guest rooms. The collection of art was assembled by David Coyle from ArtBrokers, Inc. in Mill Valley.

The collection features works by artist Dulcy Wolverton. Dulcy’s flower radiographs, using x-rays to create images of flowers, which reveals their physical form and beauty on the inside.

Mrs. Huang’s Personal Art Collection

Mrs. Huang, owner of the Orchard Garden Hotel, included pieces from her personal collection in the new hotel. Included are pieces that she acquired on trips to China over the years.

Collaboration of Art and Architecture was a hallmark of the teaching at the Bauhaus School of Design founded by Architect Walter Gropius. A fundamental premise of the Bauhaus was that all of the creative arts should be unified under the leadership of architecture. The founding principals of Architecture International, John P. Sheehy FAIA, RIBA, Bill Higgins, AIA and Sherry Caplan, IIDA, Assoc. AIA, have continued this tradition throughout their careers, first at The Architects Collaborative, which was also founded by Walter Gropius, and now, at Architecture International. For the Orchard Garden Hotel they developed the notion that the art program should be incorporated into the architecture rather than as an independent piece, and initiated a collaborative process towards this end.
