Let’s review some terms. “Lector” is a strange word. “The lector reads the lectio from the lectern.” Say what? Lector comes from the Latin word meaning reader . Lectio” also comes from the Latin and means the lesson or reading. Lectern” is from the Latin meaning, a tall stand with a sloping top to hold a book or notes, and from which someone, typically a preacher or lecturer, can read while standing up. Just to complicate things, the early church used the word ambo which means an elevated pulpit with a flight of stairs, from which the Epistles and Gospels were read and sermons preached. Strictly speaking at St. Brigid of Kildare we have a lectern.

PARTICIPATING IN THE MASS

Mass 101 continues. The lector has welcomed us with some opening remarks and then we are invited to stand and welcome the servers, the lectors, the deacon and the cele-brant. The Celebrant is the priest who will lead us in the celebration of Mass. The procession is called the Entrance Procession. We stand to indicate we are in this together; we stand with and for each other and together, with one voice we offer praise to God in song. The music has been carefully planned and chosen by Katherine Florian, our Di-rector of Music. She does this by carefully looking over the readings and choosing songs and music to enhance them. The choir has practiced the music and now you and I are invited to join in the singing and the cantor is there to lead us. The song articulates a message.

Let’s review some terms. “Lector” is a strange word. “The lector reads the lectio from the lectern.” Say what? Lector comes from the Latin word meaning reader. “Lectio” also comes from the Latin and means the lesson or reading. “Lectern” is from the Latin – meaning, a tall stand with a sloping top to hold a book or notes, and from which someone, typically a preacher or lecturer, can read while standing up. Thank you to all who have supported the 2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. We are very close but still need $7,261 to reach our $275,000 goal. The funds from this year’s Appeal will enable us to reach out to the needy and to assure a better future

for our neighbors in the Diocese. Please consider a donation to this important cause. No gift is too small. Thank you for your generosity.

This week, we will take up the Collec-

tion for the Church in Latin Ameri-

ca which faces many challenges, including violence and a lack of both clergy and lay leadership to witness the gospel message. Your generosity to this collection is invaluable to the future of the Church in this region.

School Supply Drive

The annual school collec-tion sponsored by the Social Action Committee will be held the weekend of August 12 - 13 and benefits paro-

chial schools in the Columbus Diocese. All items will be distributed by Catholic Social Services to those in need. Please remember this as you make your own back-to-school purchases this year. Place your donations in the containers in the Immke Room of Hendricks Hall before or after Mass on August 12th and 13th.

Thank you to all our parishioners who con-tribute to St. Brigid Parish through Electron-ic Fund Transfer using their credit cards. Since many credit cards have recently been compro-

may need to update your card information in order to

process your donation. If you have recently been is-sued a new credit card by your bank, please contact the Parish Office at 614-761-3734 with your new card num-ber and expiration date. St. Brigid of Kildare is very grateful for your continued support and generosity.

VERY, VERY BASIC OVERVIEW OF ISLAM

Today many people are eager to learn more about the Islamic religion. For six (maybe seven weeks) we will explore some basic understandings of Islam and its connection to Judaism and Christianity. Sep-

tember 7, 14, 21, 28 and October 5, 12, 19 (if necessary).

7:00 – 8:15 PM in Immke Room of Hendricks Hall. This is a very basic presentation that will include: Why is Islam an Abrahamic Religion? Who is Muhammed? What is the Quran? The Five Pillars of Islam, Ramadan, and Islamic Prayer are a few of the topics that will be covered. - Sister Teresa

Attention Liturgical Ministers: Joanie Roma’s email address has changed. Her new email address is [email protected].

Studying the past to gain insight into the present is exactly why exploring the story of the Church can be so important to our faith. This concise history of the Cath-olic Church tells the story of the

two thousand-year relationship between Jesus and the be-lievers who have followed him. It is a story of people: peasants and popes, saints and heretics, martyrs and apos-tates. Mostly, the story shows how common people throughout the ages have passed on the faith from genera-tion to generation and tried to live the life of Christ. The story of the Church is also about the Spirit of God who dwells with us always. We will use the book entitled A Popular History of the Catholic Church by Karl Koch (available through Amazon). We meet after 9:00 AM Mass (about 9:35) in Hendricks’ Hall until 11:15 AM. The first session will be September 5, 2017. Because of its scope, this topic will last for about 8 weeks. –Sister

Teresa Tuite, OP

Meals on Wheels Volunteers Needed

St. Brigid volunteers have been deliver-ing Meals on Wheels for nearly ten years. We are in need of additional volunteers. The time commitment is about two hours every four weeks. Drivers pick up bags

of food at about 10:30 am, deliver the meals, and then drop off the empty bags around 12:30 pm. You can deliver by yourself or with a partner. This is an easy and satisfying ministry. Please contact Jim Whitmer via email at [email protected] or via text at 614-595-8020.

One of the major actions of Jesus was reach-ing out to the sick: the sick of mind, the sick of body, and the sick of heart. The Sacra-ment of the Anointing of the Sick is to give strength, to give hope, to give grace, to give comfort, to give blessing, to give courage, to

give what the person most needs for that deep inner heal-ing and calm. Anointing of the Sick is given to those who are sick but not necessarily near death or in a critical situa-tion. Anointing of the Sick is administered to anyone who is experiencing some type illness, before a planned or emergency surgery or any one suffering from addiction to drugs or alcohol, and domestic abuse. It may be adminis-tered to those who especially are experiencing chronic ill-ness or mental illness. Lastly, it may be administered to those who were deeply hurt and are still suffering the ef-fects of that in their lives and in their relationships or to those who cannot let go of anger and resentment. Sickness is not limited to the mental or physical: sickness shows its power in many forms and ways.

There are different ways that the Sacrament of the Anoint-ing of the Sick is administered. Sometimes a call will come into the Parish Office asking that a priest come and anoint someone who is very ill or is about to have serious surgery. The other is done at Mass. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at Mass is one way for the Church to wrap the person in the unconditional, limitless love and mercy of God. There are two actions: the laying on of hands and the priest says: “to call down God’s blessing,” at which time those who seek the Sacrament come forward for the anointing of the Holy Oil on the forehead and the hands. When the forehead is anointed the priest says: “Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and

mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit.” When the hands are anointed with the Sign of the Cross, the pray-er is: “May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and

raise you up.”

When the Sacrament is offered during Mass, the entire community joins in praying for those receiving the Sacra-ment. The Anointing of the Sick will be offered on Au-gust 20th during the 10:45 AM Mass. “Is anyone sick among you, let them call the elders of the Church and let them pray over them and anoint them with oil.” JA 5:14

Family First is a St. Brigid of Kildare

parish ministry that seeks to empower

parents in their roles as leaders in the

home/domestic church.

Today’s gospel reading was the story of Jesus’s transfig-uration. Discuss as a family: 1. Why did Jesus take the three disciples on a high moun-

tain (it’s helpful to read the end of Matthew 16)? 2. To transfigure means “to transform into something

more beautiful”. What did Jesus look like after he was transfigured?

3. God told the disciples that “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him” and the disciples became afraid. What did Jesus then do and say to them? Why should this give us hope?

We will be hosting a PGC class at St. Brigid on 9/18/2017 in Hendricks Hall at 6:30 pm. Registration is required online at www.virtus.org. This is a "closed session" for St. Brigid of

Kildare parish and school volunteers and employees only. Online registration is required at www.virtus.org.

Bishop Barron Mini-Courses

Often people want to do a Bishop Barron course but their schedule or health does not allow it. They can’t come to the parish sessions and prefer to do it at home when it is more convenient for them. We are setting up a pilot group that we hope will resolve the issue.

In order to participate in the Bishop Barron Mini-Course pilot group, all you need is an email account and access to a computer that uses

Google Chrome. Flocknote (an email and text messaging tool created for churches, ministries, teams and other community organizations) teamed up with Bishop Barron to offer five free video mini-courses. These free video mini-courses come to you through email and contain a short video followed by a few thought-provoking ques-tions. Topics include Who is God and how do we know? Who is Jesus and why is he different? What did Jesus

really teach? Why the Church matters; and How to pray and why it matters. You will receive these videos by e-mail each week. If you want to add a comment to others participating in the course, you will be able to do that, too. If you would like to be part of this e-mail group, please send you name and e-mail to Sister Teresa at

[email protected]. Space for the pilot group is limited to 38 people. The course will begin August 21 so you need to be registered by then. This mini-course will last for five weeks. - Sr. Teresa Tuite, OP

Becoming Heart Sisters is a small group process focusing on the topic of friendship. It combines, small group sharing, private study, video presenta-tion. The program begins on September 13th and meets for seven consecutive weeks from 7:00 – 8:30 PM in Immke Room of Hendricks Hall.

Some questions that have been raised: • Do I have to be a parishioner of SBK? No, we would welcome anyone who comes. • My best friend is not a catholic can I bring her? Yes, we would welcome her . • I have to miss three of the six sessions can I still come? I would say that knowing ahead of time that

you would miss so many sessions, that this might not be the program for you, at this time. There are always emergencies that come up that would cause someone to miss and that is fine. However, knowing before you start how many you would miss is different.

• I have never done anything like this before does that matter? No, we all have to begin somewhere. • How much does it cost? $30 (which includes the book)

Come to an Introductory Session on August 23rd at 7:00 PM in Immke Room of Hendricks Hall. Registration will close on September 1st. -- Sister Teresa Tuite, OP
