Hosted Services Energy Reduction
Greening the data center/ NOC
Who Is:
• Hosted Services:– Larry Konig, Manager Network Operations– Tim Currie, Network Operations Engineer– Linda Morgandale, Hosted Services Specialist
• Introduction by Tim Currie• Presentation by Linda Morgandale
A thought
• The cost of powering data centers worldwide is predicted to expand from $18.5 billion in 2005 to $250 billion by 2012.
• The cost to run data centers is now the second-largest expense after people.
– According to Bob Worral, Chief Information Officer at Sun Microsystems in a Forbes piece, July 28, 2008.
Board Goal
• CCIU Board goal for each division: reduce energy consumption by five percent (5%)
• Hosted Services is projecting that within 12 months the overall goal of five percent (5%) can be achieved in the data center/NOC.
How
• Remove obsolete equipment and recycle.
How
• Remove obsolete equipment and recycle.• Migrate applications, when appropriate, to
underutilized servers. Remove hardware and recycle.

• Server virtualization– Run multiple virtual servers on a single physical
server.
How• Remove obsolete equipment and recycle.• Migrate applications, when appropriate, to
underutilized servers. Remove hardware and recycle.
• Server virtualization– Run multiple virtual servers on a single physical
server.• Blade Server Technology
– Multiple blades in one enclosure (10U)– Up to 16 blades per enclosure (8 Full/16 Half)– Virtualization of blade servers
Assumptions
• Use technology industries “best practices”.• List all servers and switches supported by Hosted Services
and their required watts.• Growth by 6 servers per year (based on previous years
growth). 306 watts per server.• Use energy costs per kWh, from CCIU Operations. (Energy
companies will deregulate in 2010).• Use gross energy consumption based on a formula and a
web tool from Dell Inc. for data center planning.• Use toolsets for ongoing monitoring usage of servers and
switches.• During migration, overall energy use will increased as
systems run in parallel, until systems are removed.
How to Measure Energy Reduction• Current watts used in Hosted Services
• Use formula:– (Watts x Hours)/1000 = Daily Kilowatt hours (kWh) x
days used = annual kWh * cost per Kilowatt = Annual dollar amount
Current Energy Costs (.10283/kWh) provided by CCIU Business Office.

Options
1. Use virtualization and blade technology.2. Use virtualization.3. Continue as we are.
