NO INSTRUMENT IN THE LAST NEAR-century has had as all-encompassing an

impact on myriad musical genres as the guitarin its many acoustic, amplified and electronicforms. This is truer than ever in jazz, where theguitar has been the spearhead for hybrid formsof the music ranging from gypsy and flamencojazz to fusions with rock, heavy metal and funk.As a result, the pair of guitarist-led albums com-prising this Winning Spins couldn't be more dif-ferent. Howard Alden pays tribute to an earlyEuropean gypsy-jazz pioneer using a seven-string hollow body guitar; while Nels Cline'sinstrument is powered through a pedal controlbox sporting a veritable cornucopia of EFX.

Alden's I Remember Django (ArborsRecords), differs from the plethora of DjangoReinhardt/Hot Club of France tribute bands andalbums in distinctive ways, beginning withAlden's use of a seven-stringed instrument andincluding his non-imitative of (albeit inspiredby) Hot Club instrumentations, i.e., a drumlessguitar and bass rhythm section (Matt Munisteriand Jon Burr, respectively) but not the usualviolin. Alden also offers a few solo and duotracks, some of the latter with two prominentguests: Anat Cohen, listed in the personnel onclarinet but actually playing soprano sax onthree of her five appearances; and cornetistWarren Vaché on four tracks.

The tribute elements are most pronouncedon the trio numbers, both with and withoutguests, as they often emulate the fleet, steady-strummed tempos of the Hot Club while alsodelving into its repertoire. Standing out areGershwin's "Who Cares?", Vaché and Aldentrading solos and a swinging shout chorus; DukeEllington's "Jubilee Stomp", soprano sax chirpi-ly embracing the title's momentum; and a jaun-ty "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea"with fast-revving, tightly muted cornet andquicksilver lines from Alden. But most impres-sive are the duos and Alden's solo tracks.Django's most famous tune, "Nuages," is a gor-geous duo with Cohen's soprano sax; "I'mConfessin' That I Love You" exudes smart cor-net-guitar interplay. And Alden unleashes thefull potential of all seven strings (that extra bassone is a revelation) on a tour-de-force, swinging"Nagasaki" and a lovely duologue with himselfon the final, Django-Grappelli standard, "Tears."

Initiate (Cryptogramophone) credited to theNels Cline Singers, pairs studio and live-in-clubconcert discs in an album by the guitarist'spower trio (bassist Devin Hoff and drummer/percussionist Scott Amendola), with occasionalkeyboards or percussion guests. Cline's

approach to guitar music seems to be as inclu-sive as an astrophysicist's unified theory of theuniverse. iTunes, which usually assigns genresto tracks, labels this player's work under"Unclassifiable." Cline, who has been a memberof the alternative rock band Wilco since 2004, isobviously as enamored with the sonic possibili-ties of the guitar originally explored by rockerJimi Hendrix as he is with the jazz guitar tradi-tion. Only Pat Metheny comes close to Cline inthe exploration of guitar EFX.

The pieces on the studio CD of Initiate aremore focused in concept and intent than thoseon the live CD, as if Cline were concentrating onvarious aspects and moods of his music on eachstudio track. For instance, "Grow Closer," withits exotic, tabla-like beat, single-note guitarlines and catchy tune, is close to mainstreammodern jazz; while the following cut,"Scissor/Saw," full of odd, metallic electro-per-cussion, fuzz and feedback, echoes the MusiqueConcrete movement. But on many of the livedisc’s numbers, Cline manages to throw in everydevice and technique he's learned as a jazz, rockand experimental EFX guitarist, from a "Blues,Too" - dedicated to Jim Hall but morphing intoCarlos Santana wail-sighs and electric bowing -to the spacey electronic EFX and distortions of"Thurston County" and heavy metal feedbackand warp of the pounding "Forge" and power

AHMAD JAMALROSE THEATER / FEBRUARY 25 AND 26This Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents Jazz Jam pairing of pianist Ahmad Jamal andalto saxophonist Lee Konitz could be mistaken for an episode billing of the TV series"Iconoclasts." Modern jazz has produced few pianists with as distinctive and idiosyn-cratic a style as Jamal. His ample use of extreme dynamic and rhythmic shifts, spaceand juxtapositions of the highly abstract with the pensively lyrical had a profoundinfluence on Miles Davis in the 1950s, when the trumpeter's quintet played manystandards modeled after Jamal's trio recordings. Now 80, Jamal has continued to explorethe outer reaches of his concepts in recent years. These concerts will be a rare oppor-tunity to hear him interacting with musicians other than those in his own band. GK

MARTIN WINDKITANO / FEBRUARY 10If this gig is as special and impressive as the CD whose release it is celebrating - GetIt? (Laika) - it will indeed be cause to celebrate. Bassist Wind, a native of Germanywho now resides here, continues in the tradition of such notable bassist-leaders asCharles Mingus and Dave Holland. Like them, he is also a composer-arranger whoallows his musicians more than a modicum of freedom. They include the multi-instru-mentalist Scott Robinson (tenor sax, trumpet and clarinet on the CD), pianist BillCunliffe and drummer Tim Horner. The album is full of surprising rhythmic and har-monic turns. And if the quartet essays its content fully here, expect to see Wind him-self doubling, on cello - which he plucks and bows effectively on two tracks. GK

JEFF WILLIAMSCORNELIA STREET CAFÉ / FEBRUARY 26It'll be a pianoless quartet: Duane Eubanks playing trumpet, John O'Gallagher onalto, John Hébert as bassist and Williams doing the drumming. It's not a one-off con-figuration, mind you; these four have been playing together locally as a unit formonths at Smalls and elsewhere. The group's debut CD, Another Time (WhirlwindRecordings) is slated for release later this year. To be sure, Williams is no newcomerto the jazz big leagues. Since the 70s, he's profitably interacted in clubs and recordingstudios with Stan Getz, Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano, Paul Bley, Kenny Wheeler andLee Konitz. He's also been passing on his skills as percussionist and leader throughteaching posts at the New School, LIU, UConn and in the U.K., where he spends con-siderable time each year. PB

AARON GOLDBERGVILLAGE VANGUARD / FEBRUARY 1-6We're especially intrigued by Home (Sunnyside), Goldberg's 2010 CD. Among lastyear's best releases, it's a great follow-up to his 2006 effort Worlds, which included adelightful original entitled "Unstablemates," a slightly twisted take on Benny Golson'sclassic tune. A harmonically sophisticated pianist who reminds many of Bill Evansand Keith Jarrett, Aaron's recently interacted to fine effect with Kurt Rosenwinkeland Mark Turner, who guested on the albums above. In recent years, he's toured withJoshua Redman, Madeleine Peyroux, Wynton Marsalis and the LCJO. By turns rhap-sodic and solidly swinging, he richly deserves wider public acclaim. His Vanguardband includes Turner, Reuben Rogers on bass and Eric Harland on drums. He's alsopart of vibist Warren Wolf's quintet at the Jazz Gallery on February 11. PB

HILARY KOLEBIRDLAND / FEBRUARY 8-12 AND 14This vocalist/composer's life would make a great movie: Focused on music from theget-go, by age 12 she was winning awards and scholarships; at 17, the JacksonvilleSymphony premiered one of her compositions. She applied to the Manhattan School ofMusic with film scoring in mind, but was instead offered a full scholarship in jazz com-position. She became a singer almost by accident, after joining the school's jazz choir. While still in college, Hilary became the last big band singer at the famous RainbowRoom, singing standards six nights a week. On You Are There, her second album onJustin, she teams up with some of the greatest pianists including Dave Brubeck andthe late Hank Jones. So if you're yearning to hear a romantic tune during herValentine's week gig at Birdland, chances are Hilary will know it. And if anyone evermakes a movie of her life, she could write the soundtrack. DEREK SMITHTRIBECA P.A.C. / MARCH 10The salient quality of pianist Derek Smith's playing is exuberance. The opposite of theshrinking-violet, broodingly introspective jazzman, Smith is a bon vivant extrovert atthe piano, where his two-handed approach is indefatigably swinging. And swing he has, from his early days in London (where he was born) with Johnny Dankworth's big bandto stints with Benny Goodman and Buddy DeFranco after he emigrated to the USA at25. Smith, who turns 80 in August, is being saluted as a Statesman of Jazz in thisHighlights in Jazz program that will also feature fellow pianist Dick Hyman, withwhom Smith has played two-piano duets over the years, plus such musician-compatri-ots as Warren Vaché, Houston Person, Ken Peplowski, Nicki Parrott, Aaron Weinsteinand Jackie Williams. GK

WAYNE SHORTERTOWN HALL / FEBRUARY 9A decade ago Wayne Shorter recruited three young musicians who'd cut their teeth onthe saxophonist's classic Blue Note and Miles Davis recordings. It was immediately evi-dent to critics and fans that this was a congress of brilliant like-minded musicians.Fortunately, the band has remained together longer than any of Shorter's other ensem-bles with the exception Weather Report, the seminal fusion group he co-led with JoeZawinul. At 77, Shorter is still fit and sounding great, especially on soprano, and hisingenious soloing and inspired compositions remain free of clichés. With pianist DaniloPerez, John Patitucci on bass and Brian Blade behind the drums, the collective cre-ativity of this group can be spellbinding. YE

DAVID BERKMANSMOKE / FEBRUARY 25 AND 26The Big Apple has no shortage of fine jazz pianists, but the list becomes a lot moreexclusive when you qualify it with an equal talent for composition. In the quarter cen-tury he's been on the New York scene, David Berkman has created an impressive bodyof work in a mainstream-modern idiom that recalls the strengths of such distinctivepost-bop composer-musicians as Wayne Shorter and Benny Golson. As impressive anarranger as he is a player, Berkman showcases his works in bands ranging from quar-tet (hear his CD, Live at Smoke on Challenge) to sextet. He's bringing a quintet to thisgig, featuring trumpeter Tom Harrell, with whom he has performed duo concerts; sax-ophonist Dick Oatts; bassist Ed Howard; and drummer Rodney Green. GK

PETE MALINVERNISMALLS / FEBRUARY 4 AND 5Probably best known around town for leading trios, pianist Pete Malinverni has a com-plex yet accessible style - reflecting such diverse influences he cites as Erroll Garner,Ahmad Jamal, Sonny Clark and Bill Evans - that has also been shaped by his contin-uing involvement as music director of black Baptist church in Brooklyn. For this gig,he's been given a rare opportunity to lead a quintet in reprising the music he recordedon his 2008 CD Invisible Cities (Reservoir), his originals and reworkings of standardstaking inspiration from a book of the same name by the late, internationally acclaimedItalian writer Italo Calvino. His quintet will include Scott Wendholt, trumpet; RichPerry, saxophones; Ugonna Okegwo, bass; and Tom Melito, drums. GK

n Center, Finck by Shiho Yabe 21

n, George Kanzler & Elzy Kolb

DAVID FINCKBLUE NOTE / FEBRUARY 7-9Few classical music listeners recall that conductor and composer Andre Previn was, during the 50s and 60s, one of the country's best-selling jazz pianists. Among hiscohorts on record then were bassists Red Mitchell and Ray Brown. For these threenights at the Blue Note, he's chosen Finck, a worthy successor indeed. Although he'simpressed with solid sideman work on hundreds of albums under the leadership of oth-ers, Finck's discography lists just a single CD under his own name: 2008's Future Day(Soundbrush). But it's a honey, one of that year's finest. Given his faultless intonationand time, his pleasantly woody tone and the tasteful economy that characterizes hissoloing, Finck will likely bring out the playfulness in Previn during their duo setstogether. PAUL MEYERSTRUMPETS / FEBRUARY 4To hear Meyers, who's equally conversant in straightahead jazz and Brazilianmusic, one might think he was Brazilian-born. Yet that's not the case. He grew upin a Manhattan home with a classical singer mother and a trombonist father.Although Paul started on guitar with a keen interest in what Wes Montgomery wasdoing, he soon began exploring the work of Baden-Powell and a host of other bossanova figures. Years at SUNY Potsdam and the New England Conservatory; and pri-vate study with Jaki Byard and Gene Bertoncini have strengthened his composingand arranging chops; singers like Jon Hendricks, Annie Ross, Andy Bey, SusannahMcCorkle and Vera Maraobviously value his skills as accompanist; but to experi-ence what Paul's been creating lately on nylon-string acoustic guitar, check WorldOn A String (Miles High Records).

OLIVER LAKECECIL'S / FEBRUARY 12A Renaissance Man of sorts (poet, painter, performance artist and composer), altosaxophonist and flutist Lake, a product of the churning late-60s St. Louis jazzscene, exhibits extraordinary talents and an eclectic musical range. A co-founder ofthe renowned World Saxophone Quartet during the 70s, Oliver seems equally com-fortable with neo-beboppers, rappers, reggae artists and the players of traditionalChinese music. If you're one of his admirers, you've probably already enjoyed hismusical partnerships with Reggie Workman and Andrew Cyrille and his collabora-tions with Geri Allen, Tim Berne and the String Trio of New York. Joined by JaredGold (organ), Bill McClennen (drums) and Freddie Hendrix (trumpet), expect tohear selections from Plan, a recent offering issued by Lake’sown label, Passin' Thru.

JOE LOCKEBETHANY BAPTIST CHURCH / FEBRUARY 5Because he grew up in Rochester, vibraphonist Locke has the advantage of someclassical training at Eastman School of Music. But even before his high school yearsended, he'd also had chances to play with visiting jazz luminaries like DizzyGillespie, Pepper Adams and Mongo Santamaria. Since moving to NYC in 1981Locke has toured extensively with the likes of Kenny Barron and Geoffrey Keezer.Along the way, he's been heralded in DownBeat Magazine's Critic's Poll and record-ed at least twenty-five CDs as a leader. Admiring writers have enthused about his"crystalline tone" with a "warm glow around the edges." Pianist Robert Rodriguez, bas-sist Ricardo Rodriguez and percussionist Alvester Garnett will share the banstand.

RALPH BOWENMAKEDA RESTAURANT / FEBRUARY 24A sterling saxophonist who hails from Acton, a hamlet of 2000 people near Toronto,Bowen started on clarinet at seven, inspired in part by his dairy farmer grandfa-ther who led a dance band called Gordon Bowen and Merry Melody Makers. Thesedays a composer and academic, Ralph fits comfortably into the tenor traditionestablished by Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter and Michael Brecker.Early on, he was part of Blue Note Record's swaggering Out Of The Blue sextet.Since then, he's spent significant time gigging and recording with Horace Silver,Charles Fambrough, Michel Camilo and Orrin Evans. Along the way, he's cut fourterrific CDs for the Dutch label Criss Cross. This appearance will serve to debutmaterial from his latest recording, Power Play, a new one for the folks at Positone.Evans, a major component in that disc's vitality, will be on hand as well.

AVETERAN OF THE NEW YORK JAZZscene for decades, saxophonist Steve Wilson

has built a sizable discography as leader andsideman. Wilson's interest in jazz dates to hisyouth. "I started lessons on alto saxophone attwelve," he says, "although drums were actuallymy first love, I played them in marching band inhigh school. But hearing Eddie Harris,Cannonball Adderley and Rahsaan Roland Kirklive at a jazz festival where I grew up inVirginia, along with their recordings, drew me tosaxophone. The oboe came during high school. Iplayed in the symphonic wind band and got intocollege on an oboe scholarship. After my firstyear, I realized that there was no such thing asa mediocre oboe player! I love the instrumentand played it fairly well. But it was very time-consuming. I studied flute in college and latertook up clarinet on my own, to be able to play inbig bands."

One figure stands out prominently inWilson's student years. "Doug Richards, whoheaded the jazz department at VirginiaCommonwealth University during the early 80s,instilled in me an understanding of the love andsignificance of Duke Ellington, Jelly RollMorton, Louis Armstrong and Johnny Hodges, who's still my favorite saxophonist. He alsobrought in Elvin Jones, Sonny Rollins, JakiByard, Frank Foster, the Heath Brothers andWoody Shaw as artists-in-residence, exposing usto the masters. His passion for the music wasreally infectious. He opened my eyes to the won-derful history of jazz, its historical and culturallegacy, and to being a professional ready to domany different things."

Another major influence on Wilson duringhis years as a professional has been BusterWilliams. "Buster and I have a long association,"notes Wilson, who's worked with the bassistsince 1991. "In fact, I'm doing a tour with himright after my birthday week at the Standard. He's taught me how to listen because he writessuch beautiful melodies. He plays terrific basslines and has a great beat. Through him, I'velearned a lot about maintaining finesse withintensity."

Wilson's career quickly gathered momentum."Soon after leaving school, I met Kenny Garrettwhen I was hired to play one of the locals in theshow 'Sophisticated Ladies.' Then when Kennywas leaving the group called Out of the Blue in1986, he suggested that I try out for the band. Imoved to New York a year later." Wilson subse-quently worked with Lionel Hampton, RalphPeterson, Jr., the American Jazz Orchestra, theMingus Big Band, the Dave Holland Quintetand Chick Corea's Origin, among ensembles.

Wilson celebrates his 50th birthday thismonth with an extended Jazz Standard engage-ment. Over six evenings, he'll utilize five differ-ent lineups. "Mostly, it's old friends. Forinstance, the pianist Bruce Barth and I arrivedin New York around the same time in 1987. Iused to go to his Brooklyn apartment, where

nearly everybody seemed to come at one time oranother for jam sessions. We started playingtogether in each other's bands and recordingwith one another. We did our first duo projectabout six months ago - a CD called Home. Theterrific bassist Ed Howard, whom I first heardwith Roy Haynes, plus drummer Adam Cruz, who worked with me in Origin, round out thequartet for the first couple of nights. On the sec-ond night, we'll also be joined by Karrin Allysonand Carla Cook, two of my favorite vocalistswith whom I've toured and recorded. Theirstyles and approaches are quite different buthave a wide range of repertoire between them.

"On the third night, we'll have a string quar-tet conducted by David O'Rourke, a great gui-tarist and arranger. He's put together several'Bird With Strings' charts, a few of which werenever recorded by Bird. We're also going to openit up for the string players to solo and make it areal blowing kind of gig. They include violinistsDiane Monroe of the Uptown String Quartet andJoyce Hammond, violist Nardo Poy and cellistTroy Stuart. The rhythm section players willinclude Bruce again, along with Ugonna Okegwoon bass and my longtime associate Lewis Nashon drums.

"For the fourth night, we'll go in a complete-ly different direction with Lewis, ChristianMcBride on bass and Mulgrew Miller, who's sortof the dean among his generation of pianists.Freddie Hendrix rounds out this quintet. I metFreddie at William Paterson University when Iwas teaching there in 1991. Since then, he hasestablished himself as a great multi-facetedtrumpeter who solos with lots of fire and finesse. Then on the final two nights, we have anotherterrific section: Geoffrey Keezer on piano,Christian on bass and Jeff 'Tain' Watts playingdrums. So all week long, it'll be fun playing withboth old friends and new ones."

Including his recent duo CD with Barth, theWilson catalog now stands at nine recordings asleader or co-leader. "And there are two moreprojects that I hope to document soon," he adds."I've already done a few engagements with mynew quartet called Wilsonian's Grain, withOrrin Evans, Ugonna Okegwo and Bill Stewart.I hope to get around to writing more for them. And I want to keep expanding on the stringsproject and develop material for that, too."

Steve Wilson heads six different ensemblesover the course of his Jazz Standard engage-ment on Feb. 8-13.

"I'M OUT IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA ATthe moment," reports organist Joey

DeFrancesco on the phone, "playing at the clubcalled Steamers in Fullerton and doing demon-strations on the new KeyB, which I endorse. Istill play a Hammond B-3 occasionally on tour. But I'm mostly working on the KeyB, an elec-tronic instrument made by an Italian company.I helped design it and it sounds pretty much likethe B-3. And with the KeyB, you're not luggingthe weight of an old B-3 around with you andyou have your own personal instrument."

"My regular group is a solid one: PaulBollenback playing guitar and Byron 'Wookie'Landham on drums. I first played with Paularound 1990 at an ASCAP event and loved theway he soloed, as well as how he accompaniedme. Maybe you heard Byron on my first LP,which came out in 1989. But I've actually knownhim since 1981. So the three of us will be work-ing at Dizzy's with Frank Wess. I've been a fanof Frank's ever since I can remember and I'vealways loved those great albums he's part of. Imean, who doesn't? Frank and I have neverrecorded together. But since every set at Dizzy'sis documented for possible future use on theirradio series, some of what we do on those sixnights might eventually be heard elsewhere."

Why has there been such a wealth of jazzorgan talent in the Philadelphia area? "Peoplejoke that there's something special in the munic-ipal water supply," muses DeFrancesco. "I don'tknow about that, but it's really remarkable, isn'tit? All those great players hailing from the sameregion: Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, CharlesEarland, Shirley Scott, Trudy Pitts - and GrooveHolmes from right across the bridge in Camden.Actually, I was born in Philly only because myparents moved to town from Niagara Falls in1967, four years before I came along. I guessyou'd have to call Jimmy Smith the dominantperson in that organ community. There wereother older organ players before him, yes, but hepretty much dominated, once he came onto thescene. Then everyone else sort of followed him.

"And Trudy Pitts, who just passed away, might be called the queen of that organ commu-nity and one of the instrument's unsung heroes.

JOEY DEFRANCESCO

ORGAN FAMILY MATTERS By Paul Blair

She made a few recordings early on but neverenough of them - and none of them representedher very well. There was so much soul in herplaying and her singing. Me, I really adored her.I knew her since I was about seven years old. Ina way, she was part of our family. She used tocome over on Christmas Eve, stuff like that. Wemiss her."

DeFrancesco's 1989 debut album, All Of Me(Columbia) is often credited for having revived awidespread interest in the organ as a vital jazzvoice. Other standouts in the DeFrancesco cata-log include 1991's Part III (containing a thun-derously brisk treatment of Monk's "Rhythm-a-ning"); and It's About Time, 1995 keyboard frol-ic in partnership with Brother Jack McDuff thatopens with a memorable slow-burn blues titled"Pork Chops And Pasta." With Sinatra In Mind, recorded in 1998, is a rundown of numbers asso-ciated with the singer; while Legacy is a 2004collaboration with Jimmy Smith. An equallyvibrant recent effort - 2008's Finger Poppin'(Doodlin' Records) - celebrates the compositionallegacy of pianist Horace Silver, with flugelhor-nist Tom Harrell and tenor Tim Warfield asguest soloists.

The newest DeFrancesco release is NeverCould Say Goodbye: The Music Of MichaelJackson (High Note). "I grew up listening toMichael," says the organist. "He was an incredi-ble artist, a genius. What's more, he wrote greattunes with real changes and wonderful littlethings happening - stuff we could work with.Naturally, I wish we'd put out that album whilehe was still alive. Still, I'm happy with the wayit turned out and honored that it's been nomi-nated for a Grammy.

Younger organists having an impact on thescene these days? "There are a couple that I par-ticularly like. One is Pat Bianchi, who's kind oflike my little brother. He actually plays me bet-ter than I do! And there's another wonderfulplayer out in Chicago, Pete Benson. But I heargood organists all over the place and I'm proudto be part of this renaissance. When I came onthe scene in 1989, I was a new face, a kid play-ing the B-3 in a very funky way. Jimmy Smithand Jack McDuff were still doing club gigs andmaking records, of course. But Hammond hadalready stopped manufacturing B-3s. Somehow,my first album ended up making it a little easi-er for everyone else."

And finally, how about a few words about hisorganist father, known professionally as PapaJohn DeFrancesco? "Well, I've gotta say a lot ofwords!" he responds. "First of all, he's a wonder-ful parent to my brother, my sister and me. I'vebeen lucky to have both of my parents togetherin a loving situation for my whole life. Withoutthem, I just wouldn't be where I am today. Butalong with all that, my dad is a funky, greasyorgan player. I might have a bit more technicalfacility than he does, and maybe more harmonicknowledge. Still, he has what money can't buy -that feel and that groove. You really don't needall that other stuff to make great music. If youdo have them, great. But feeling - that comesfirst and what I learned from him about feelingis the basis of everything I do."

Joey DeFrancesco's trio, along with specialguest Frank Wess, holds forth at Dizzy's on Feb.1-6.

Classic sentimentsPianist/composer Peggy Stern played classical,rhythm-and-blues, salsa and many kinds of eth-nic music before turning her attention to jazz. She studied at the Eastman School and contin-ued through her master’s at New EnglandConservatory. Her attention shifted from theclassical milieu to jazz when she discoveredimprovisation. “I deeply respect tradition, butI’m pretty eclectic,” Peggy says. “To this day, alot of music goes into the mix. Those early influ-ences stick. That’s when our emotions are mostavailable. I do a lot of Latin, salsa, Brazilian. I’mvery comfortable in dance mode.” She also writesa lot for vocal ensembles and choirs, but don’texpect to hear Peggy sing any time soon. “It’s nota pretty sound,” she says. “I sing in tune, but it’snot something you’d want to hear. I started as apianist and I’ll stick to that.” Peggy is lookingforward to tickling the ivories at Kitano on Feb.5, where she’ll present a mix of originals, stan-dards and Latin tunes: “We’re just going to relaxand play some music.” Peggy doesn’t make ahabit of doing wedding gigs, but she’ll occasion-ally make an exception for family and friends. She is proud of the fact that “every wedding I’veever played, the people are still married.” Somaybe that makes Peggy the ideal pianist toplay a Valentine’s Day gig with singer JayClayton at the Cornelia Street Café on Feb. 14.

Labor of loveAlthough saxophonist Marsh Heydt's last nameis pronounced "hate," she calls her band Projectof Love. She chose the name in part because ofthe humorous contrast with her name, but alsobecause it describes "the way I feel about doingeverything in life: with love, honesty and a nour-ishing spirit." As a performer, composer andeducator, “It’s a beautiful gift to share, to helppeople to be creative themselves and exploreother sides of their personalities, both bringingthem out in students and inspiring people in theaudience.” For more than ten years, Marsha hashad a regular monthly gig that's "dear to my

heart," at the Rusk Institute of RehabilitationMedicine, part of the NYU Medical Center. "Iplay standards, talk about music, answer ques-tions. The patients really enjoy it. I have to beconscientious about the material. I try to put adifferent twist on standards that have been donethousands of times." She stays busy with clubdates, too. This month alone, Marsha celebratesher birthday at Miles’ Café on Feb. 11, hits TomiJazz on Feb. 15 and plays brunch at the Garageon Feb. 26. She’s likely to cover some standards, but listeners can also expect to hear the debut ofsome brand-new original tunes Marsha plans torecord in late summer.

On writing wellSinger/composer Tessa Souter, a former journal-ist, makes a point of writing every day, a prac-tice she recommends for anyone attempting tostring words together gracefully in any disci-pline, from journaling to novels to lyrics. "Dailywriting is like vocal exercises. It's what keepsyou oiled. It's the blocks buster, how you get pastyour writer's block." When writing lyrics, Tessastarts with a goal in mind and sets a certainamount of time to spend on the endeavor. Shedoesn't try to complete a project in one sitting."It's not about the first draft, it's about the hon-ing," Tessa says. On the first pass, "I'm uninhib-ited in my writing; then I go back and correct it."When composing an original tune, the melodyand lyrics come to her at the same time. Butwhen writing words to someone else's music, thepiece "has to seem that it wants a lyric. It has tohave a lyricism that inspires an idea. My lyricsare about true things that have happened in mylife. I obscure them a bit so they're relevant toother people. I make them as universal as possi-ble. The whole point for me is to connect." Checkout Tessa's takes on tunes at the Jazz Standardon Feb. 22. Her band will include bassistCharnett Moffett: "He's a wonderful, interestingbass player, with chops and soul and heart anda lot of good ideas. What's not to love?"

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROWBill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be found at yourfavorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and

links.Scott Robinson told me about his huge contra-bass saxophone, about eight feet tall.

One day he used it on a midtown gig and was about to take it back home. He had parked hisold VW bus at the curb and was carefully inserting the behemoth sax through the side doorwhen a passerby did a double-take and came back to look. "Wow," he said. "Do you want tosell it?" Scott told him, "No, this is my baby. It's not for sale." The guy nodded, and then said,"They sure are great cars." He hadn't even noticed the giant saxophone... he coveted theVolkswagen!

Bernie Bragin told me of a recording session with Tommy Dorsey's band. On thesong "Marquita," Bunny Berigan was supposed to play the bridge, but he hadn't shown upfor the date, so Tommy assigned the part to Chris Griffin. On the take, Bunny staggered intothe studio, loaded, just a few bars before the release. He grabbed Chris's trumpet, played hissolo, and then passed out.
