TWO THIRTY-SOMETHING MUSICIANS -an alto saxophonist from Russia with a pen-

chant for finding lesser-known gems of jazzrepertoire and a tenor saxophonist once morerenowned for his alto playing who’s creating hisown repertoire and group concept – account forthis month’s Winning Spins.

Dmitry Baevsky's Down With It (SharpNine) proves that the jazz of the mid-20thCentury is full of underexplored tunes wellworth hearing. Baevsky provides seven here, from six famous jazz masters, then rounds outthe CD with two not-too-familiar pop standards. He's joined throughout by the nimble rhythmsection of pianist Jeb Patton, bassist DavidWong and drummer Jason Brown, with trum-peter Jeremy Pelt making the group a quinteton four tracks. The title tune kicks things off incrackling bebop fashion, the leader's alto saxleading the charge. It's one of two scintillatinglyswift bop tunes from the pen of Bud Powell. Theother, "Webb City," is a quintet number culmi-nating in fast traded fours between the twohorns and drummer Brown.

More than most of today's alto saxophonists,Baevsky consciously shapes his sound, varyingdynamics as well as patterns, utilizing hishorn's lower register as well as its higher foremphasis - note the crinkled low notes injectedinto his bop runs on "Down With It" - and dis-playing tones and timbres subtly adjusted to fitthe individual selections. So on "MountHarissa," an exotic Duke Ellington piece fromhis Far East Suite, and even more so on the bal-lad "Last Night When We Were Young," he letshis phrases swoop and billow with a rich JohnnyHodges-influenced tone. On Thelonious Monk's"We See," both Baevsky and Patton find jaggedhumor in the composer's tune, then exploit it intheir solos.

The four quintet tracks provide the albumwith a welcome contrast from the quartet num-bers; positioned midway, they also serve as a cli-mactic centerpiece. Three of them offer attrac-tive and relatively obscure tunes from threebebop/hard bop giants. Clifford Brown's"LaRue," an urbane song voiced by Pelt's mutedtrumpet shadowed by ghost-like obligati fromBaevsky, is followed by Gigi Gryce's "Shabozz,"a piquantly swinging theme enlivened by anAfro-Latin intro/coda. Sonny Rollins' "Decision,"a funky hard bop theme with a quirky hesitationtwo-step, rounds out the quintet numbers.

"Momentum" is the name that MyronWalden gives his current quintet, which is pat-terned after and inspired by the mid-1960sMiles Davis five-member band with Wayne

Shorter on tenor saxophone. It's most probablythe reason Waldon plays tenor instead of his for-merly more usual alto on the pair of albumsfrom the ensemble: Momentum and MomentumLive (both Demi Sound). The two CDs alsoreflect the contrast between the studio and liverecordings of that Davis quintet. Momentumfeatures not only a slightly different cast butalso instrumentation. David Bryant plays elec-tric Rhodes piano on that one, while Eden Ladinplays acoustic piano on Momentum Live.Trumpeter Dan Barrett and bassist YasushiNakamura appear on both CDs, but the drum-mers are Kendrick Scott (studio) and John Davis(live). They're as crucial to the contrast in soundand approach on the two CDs as the keyboardtextures. Scott is the more kinetic and metrical-ly adventurous drummer, while Davis is in-the-pocket, pushing the beat rather than flexing it.So the sound of the studio sessions is more com-plex and textured than the live one.

Walden has been a passionate alto saxo-phonist, and on tenor he displays as much if notmore fervor, especially on the live CD, wherelonger tracks allow both him and trumpeterBarrett to stretch out in impassioned solos. Theextra time is especially rewarding on "Miles," acool, moody ballad in both versions that benefitsfrom longer, more luxuriant dialoguing betweentenor and trumpet on the live disc. Walden's

JULIAN LAGEJAZZ STANDARD / NOVEMBER 9 AND 10A guitar prodigy as a pre-teen, Julian Lage was playing with Gary Burton's bandwhen still a teenager as well as recording with artists as diverse as Nnenna Freelonand Bela Fleck. He made his debut album, Sounding Point (EmArcy), last year at theage of 21. On it, he plays both acoustic and electric guitars - the former with a dis-tinctive, crystalline touch - and reveals a unique conception blending and borrowingfrom styles ranging from classical to folk to both ethereal and swinging jazz. Tracksvary from solo to an ensemble with sax, cello and percussion. At this gig he'll be joinedby saxophonist Dan Blake, bassist Jorge Roeder and percussionists Aristides Rivasand Tupac Mantilla, but, alas, no cellist. GK

KENNY WERNERKITANO / NOVEMBER 26 AND 27Kenny Werner is a deeply resourceful and powerful pianist who has played with suchexpressive leaders as Charles Mingus and Archie Shepp, as well as in numerous duetswith bassists, led his own trios, and even co-led a rocking The Delirium Blues Projectwith singer Roseanna Vitro. His latest CD is a more personal venture, a Third Streamproject with woodwinds, strings and voices, plus Joe Lovano, that is a moving elegy forhis late daughter: No Beginning No End. At this gig, though, Werner will be playingsolo, where he can be contemplative but also explore his roots in two-fisted stride andbarrelhouse piano, thus carrying on in the traditions of two of his favorites, FatsWaller and the marvelously eclectic Jaki Byard. GK

ALLEN TOUSSAINTLEHMAN CENTER / NOVEMBER 14There's no more fitting title than "New Orleans Nights" for any program featuringAllen Toussaint. For a half-century, Toussaint has been an architect of the R&B, funkand soul of New Orleans as pianist, guitarist, singer and producer steeped in the musi-cal traditions of Crescent City. And that love of The Big Easy's music is deep and wide,as he demonstrated on his 2009 album, Bright Mississippi, tapping not onlyThelonious Monk's title tune, but also contributions from such New Orleans jazz pio-neers as Sidney Bechet and Jelly Roll Morton. You may also have caught his playingon the HBO series Treme. At this Lehman show, he'll be sharing the stage with NewOrleans trumpeter Nicholas Payton and the Joe Krown Trio. GK

MARK TURNERVILLAGE VANGUARD / NOVEMBER 9-14Over the past dozen or so years, Turner has emerged as perhaps the most dependablyinventive and listenable of today's tenor saxophonists. For perspective on his impres-sive artistic growth over this period, hear a series of Criss Cross albums: one underhis own name, another credited to a cooperative called "MTB." (i.e. Mehldau, Turnerand Bernstein) and several more headed up by fellow saxists Jon Gordon, SeamusBlake, Tad Shull and David Binney. During just a single recent month, this writercaught Turner at four local gigs. In no case was he billed as leader. But in eachinstance, his was the most quietly and firmly compelling presence on the bandstand. At the Vanguard, he'll front a trio. Look for him, too, at Iridium with Billy Hart onNov. 26-28. PB

MEG OKURARUBIN MUSEUM / NOVEMBER 19Frankly, most past efforts to meld the jazz and classical spheres have proven some-what embarrassing to both musical communities. Naima, a self-produced 2010 CD byviolinist Okura and her Pan Asian Chamber Jazz Ensemble is a happy exception. These performances of her compositions are, by turn, delicate and subtly swinging, largely because her soloists possess strong improvisatory skills. This quietly reflectivedisc yields new delights with each new listen. With her at the Rubin - an ideal setting- will be flutist Anne Drummond, bassoonist Michael Rabinowitz, pianist MamikoKitaura, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, percussionist Keita Ogawa and the leader dou-bling on erhu, a traditional Chinese fiddle. They'll debut a new piece called"Shakyamuni Buddha" ("The Birth of Buddha"), with an image of that painting fromthe museum's collection projected behind them. PB

ETHAN IVERSON WITH BILLY HART QUARTETIRIDIUM / NOVEMBER 26-28Pianist Iverson is now best known as one-third of The Bad Plus, which proudly billsitself as "the world's loudest jazz piano trio." Their efforts as radical deconstructors ofpop music standards and rock anthems have resulted in considerable critical acclaim,a global fan base and, we hope, untold riches. (An article in this month's Downbeatdetails the group's history and ethos.) But Iverson remains, as time permits, active inother contexts. For this gig, he's part of a somewhat more mainstream group headed bydrummer Billy Hart, with whom he's recorded in the past; their partnership on a 1999disc called The Minor Passions (Fresh Sound) was particularly rewarding. The Iridiumquartet will also include Mark Turner, a hornman praised elsewhere in this center-spread, and bassist Ben Street. PB

GREG WARDCORNELIA STREET CAFÉ / NOVEMBER 7There's a muscular yet brainy tradition of jazz groups and players from the Windy City, like the Art Ensemble of Chicago or Ed Wilkerson's Eight Bold Souls. Alto saxophonistGreg Ward, an alumnus of Ted Sirota's Rebel Souls, a later generation band, has relo-cated to the Big Apple and now leads his own quartet, which draws from that well ofChicago history, as well as his own work as composer for a chamber group called theInternational Contemporary Ensemble. This gig is a CD release party for South SideStory (19-8), credited to Greg Ward's Fitted Shards, with Rob Clearfield, keyboards;Jeff Greene, basses; and Quin Kirchner, drums. It's an album impressive for bothWard's incisive alto and its highly impressionistic, programmatic pieces. GK

DADO MORONIDIZZY'S / NOVEMBER 2-7An Italian pianist who's recorded most often for relatively obscure European labels (andis thus too little known by American listeners), Moroni has cited McCoy Tyner andHerbie Hancock as among his favorite players. Yet his work's often more reminiscent ofplayers in the leaner, less florid lineage of Bud Powell. Dado's done yeoman duty as asideman in the service of guys like Ray Brown, Clark Terry, Al Grey, Jon Faddis, RonCarter, Tom Harrell and the Swiss altoist George Robert. This six-night run at Dizzy'soffered him the chance to hand-pick a sterling group of his own, and he's done just that:vibraphonist Joe Locke, bassist Peter Washington, percussionist Billy Drummond andthe estimable saxophonist/flutist Jed Levy. PB

JOHN MCLAUGHLINTOWN HALL / NOVEMBER 13John McLaughlin's guitar helped to define jazz-rock fusion in the 1960s in both TonyWilliams' Lifetime and the Miles Davis band that played rock palaces and recordedBitches Brew. His Mahavishnu Orchestra (a quintet) was a seminal 1970s fusion band.A flamboyant virtuoso of the electric instrument who mixes Indian scales into blues-rock riffs, he's equally adept at acoustic, even incorporating flamenco in his arsenal.Despite his showy fusion technique, McLaughlin also has a deeply spiritual side, one hetaps into on his new album, To the One, a tribute to Coltrane's A Love Supreme. He'llbe bringing the group from that CD, 4th Dimension, to this concert. It features key-boardist/synthesist/percussionist Gary Husband, electric bassist Etienne M'Bappe, anddrummer Mark Mondesir. GK

RANDY WESTON TRIBECA P.A.C. / NOVEMBER 13Pianist/composer Randy Weston marks the fiftieth anniversary of his landmark record-ing Uhuru Afrika with a rare performance of that extended piece, which celebratesAfrican heritage and the countries that gained their independence in 1960. Two veter-ans of that album, percussionist Candido Camero and drummer Charlie Persip, will bepart of a 22-piece orchestra playing the Melba Liston's arrangements heard on the orig-inal LP. The all-star band on hand will also include bassist Alex Blake and percussion-ist Neil Clarke, along with saxophonists T.K. Blue, Bill Saxton and Billy Harper. Thesefive are members of the Weston sextet heard on The Storyteller, a new CD for theMotema label recorded live at Dizzy's. The 84-year-old NEA Jazz Master is also releas-ing a new book: African Rhythms: The Autobiography of Randy Weston (DukeUniversity Press). EK

LES MCANNCAPE MAY JAZZ FESTIVAL / NOVEMBER 13He's quite the entertainer! Born in 1935 in Lexington, Kentucky, McCann is a self-taught keyboardist/singer unafraid of taking chances. During the 50s, after a Navystint, he settled in Los Angeles. At one point, he says, he turned down a chance towork with Miles Davis in favor of forming his own trio, billed as Les McCann Ltd.,which proved to be quite a popular draw at clubs along the Sunset Strip. Along theway, he helped to popularize the use of electric pianos, clavinets and synthesizerson the jazz scene. Many listeners know him best for his musical partnership withsaxman Eddie Harris. Their first encounter at the Montreux festival resulted in arecording entitled Swiss Movement, which yielded a crossover hit called "ComparedTo What?" Personally, we think, nothing can top Les' moving performance on theballad "With These Hands."

E.J. ALLENCECIL'S / NOVEMBER 19One of the more versatile and eclectic musicians on today's scene, post-bop trum-peter Allen has of late been concentrating on a stellar group called Sãlongo, forwhich he serves as composer, arranger and leader. This energetic, hard-hittingseven-piece Afro-Cuban/Brazilian group combines the driving rhythmic of conguerolegend Mongo Santamaria, the subtle syncopations of Brazil and harmonic conceptsfamiliar in jazz - along with the commercial appeal of a Santana. Originally fromWisconsin, Allen received his B.A. from WPU then worked with Art Blakey, BillyHarper, Randy Weston, Dizzy Gillespie and Henry Threadgill. With him at Cecil'swill be alto saxophonist Bruce Williams (an emerging star in his own right), pianistBrandon McCune, acoustic bassist Mark Peterson and drummer Jerome Jennings.

MAX WEINBERGSOPAC / NOVEMBER 6South Orange native Max Weinberg returns with a big band to begin SOPAC's fifthseason with a bang. Although this busy percussionist's roots lie in jazz, he's alsoplayed behind such non-jazz icons as Paul McCartney, Sting, Tom Jones, RingoStarr, Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and U2's Bono. Best known, per-haps, for his thirty-six years spent backing Bruce Springsteen (who calls him"Mighty Max"), he surely reached even more listeners during seventeen years asConan O'Brien's musical director, fronting the ensemble that a Washington Postcritic called "the best band in late-night television." In summary, this is truly body-shaking music where fans can expect songs that cross the musical spectrum, fromBasie to Bruce.

CYNTHIA HOLIDAYBETHANY BAPTIST CHURCH / NOVEMBER 6She may be on her way to becoming a household name - an exciting vocalist whoreally knows how to connect with audiences. Cynthia hails from Newark (SarahVaughan's hometown, by the way) and is the stepdaughter of local trumpeterCalvin Hughes, who once led his own band, the Swinging Gents. After a 1991 stintin an R&B group, Cynthia studied with pianist Duke Anderson and then withorganist Radam Schwartz. The latter's participation on the singer's debut recording(Cynthia Holiday…All The Way) adds undeniable sheen, as does the presence ofCedar Walton, saxophonist Gerald Hayes, drummer Joe Farnsworth and the latebassist Andy McCloud. All her patience and hard work has paid off. Cynthia's treat-ment of swingers, ballads and blues reflect considerable musical sophistication andsoulfulness, along with a high degree of creativity.

30 Woods photo by David W. Coulter

THOUGH HE'LL TURN EIGHTY NEXT year, NEA Jazz Master Phil Woods is hardly

slowing down, with numerous projects currentlyin the works. The alto saxophonist completed hisautobiography a while back and is now search-ing for a publisher, even as he's made severalchapters available to premium members of hiswebsite. "Ted Panken's been helping me out, doing some editing and pulling it into bettershape," he notes. And concerning the disappear-ance of his entertaining "Phil In The Gap" col-umn from the Al Cohn Memorial Newsletter?"Well, you'll find me in the next one. I did fiftyinstallments, took a little leave of absence for acouple of issues to work on the book and nowI'm back."

While bassist Steve Gilmore, drummer BillGoodwin and trumpeter Brian Lynch are long-time members of Woods' celebrated quintet, pianist Bill Mays is a fairly recent addition."We're all going to be in Birdland this month,"says Phil. "Steve Gilmore moved to Florida, buthe still comes up for gigs. Bill and I just finishedup a duo album for Palmetto that was great fun. It's mostly somewhat obscure standards fromthe American Songbook, along with some origi-nal material. I wrote a new ballad called "HankJones" that came out fairly well. I also composed"Blues For Lopes," a basic funky thing, for mydear friend Joe Lopes, who died last year. Joewas with Supersax and did lots of contract workin L.A. He came from my home town and wegrew up together. He was a great clarinet playerwho prepared me before I went off to Juilliard."

These days, Woods dedicates a fair amount oftime to composing. "I'll sketch a new piece at thepiano, then finish it on the computer. Most of thework is actually done sitting in the chair, think-ing about it. After I get a start at the keyboard,I'll hit a wall. Yeah, it sounds corny, but some-times I wake up in the middle of the night withone of those 'Eureka!' moments and dash to thepiano to finish it. Whenever I'm writing a newtune, it's continually playing in my head as I'mworking. I just can't shut it down. If I play itback mentally long enough and sing it to myself,I'll eventually get a bridge or a last eight barsout of it. Stravinsky said composing was five per-cent inspiration and ninety-five percent perspi-ration. On the other hand, though, a few songscame out like a faucet. 'Goodbye Mr. Evans,' forexample, emerged relatively swiftly."

Although health issues have limited Woods'travels to some extent, he still goes on the road."I'm heading to Chicago soon to work with theDePaul University band," he says. "It's a pro-gram focusing on my songs, with the studentsdoing most of the arrangements on them. In afew days, I'm going over to Red Rock Studio torecord a solo album. On this one, I'll play alto, piano and even sing. I've written some charts forfour altos that I'll overdub. That one's for PaoloPiangiarelli's Philology label in Italy. I have afull plate. I keep moving. The next one for Paolowill be with Lee Konitz - just the two of us. I'llplay piano and alto. With my pulmonary condi-

tion, I'm not playing clarinet anymore. It's justtoo tiring. Having been a clarinet major atJuilliard, I believe that if I can't measure up tomy own standard, that's it. I think emphysemawas Mother Nature's way of saying 'Woods, you've been playing too many notes!' I believethat handicaps can be worked around and giveyou, in a way, better art. I kind of like what I'mdoing lately, because I have to tailor-make myphrases and concentrate on utilizing what pow-ers I do have. I believe my work is more carefulthese days - not cautious, but centered."

The alto saxophonist is especially upbeatabout the future of jazz, particularly concerningseveral of his fellow alto players. "Jon Gordon isstarting to get a little attention now. FrancescoCafiso is doing well, too. Grace Kelly and I aregoing to be touring together: Sculler's in Boston,Blues Alley in Washington, and then we're head-ing to Norway and Sweden. We go out for sixweeks - January 8 through February 17. It's athrill for me. I love it. Remember the WallaceBeery-Shirley Temple movie 'The Champion'?That's what I feel like - I'm Wally Beery andshe's Shirley Temple. There's no generation gapin jazz and never has been. She's a natural. Youcan hear it in the ones who really can play. Afterone note, you say, 'Hey, the kid's got it.'" Woodscan be heard with Kelly on her upcomingJanuary release, Man With The Hat.

Asked about future issues from the stockpileof previous recordings, Woods replies, "Gee, Ihave no idea. Bill Goodwin does all our produc-tion. We have a whole lot of stuff, though. Everytime we work at Dizzy's they record both setsand it's studio quality. But the record businesshas changed, what with downloads and so on.Nowadays, you get one-shot deals. I'd love tohave a company get behind me to promote anddistribute, but people just aren't buying. Most ofthe young guys are doing their own thing, interms of business."

And the prospect of Woods launching his ownlabel? It's highly unlikely. "I just play," quips thealtoist. "I don't do retail!"

Phil Woods' quintet with Messrs. Lynch,Mays, Gilmore and Goodwin headlines atBirdland on November 16-20.

31Hall photo by Roger Sadowsky

GUITARIST JIM HALL HAS RECORDEDduets with the likes of Bill Evans, Pat

Metheny, Ron Carter, Bob Brookmeyer, BillFrisell, and others. But his recent Duo 2010(ArtistShare), on which he’s paired with drum-mer Joey Baron, felt like something new forhim, in part because he didn't do as much inadvance as usual. "Usually I would prepare a lotof music or at least a list of possible tunes. Thistime, though, I just had a few ideas in mind. Ifelt unprepared, but went in and winged it any-way."

The absence of a bass player opened somenew avenues of exploration. "There were onlythe two of us communicating with one another,"Hall says. "Bass players are great with changingthings up in a moment. But with no bass player,Joey and I would exchange a look, and one of uswould stop playing or do something different. Iaccepted the musical environment and silencesmore than I would usually, and it worked outwell. Joey's a very inventive guy, a very impres-sive player. He brought a lot of percussion doo-dads, and I brought three guitars, so there'd bemore contrast and not sound all the same."

At the time of the recording, Hall was "stillscuffling with a back injury and a low energylevel." For the past couple of years, the guitaristhas been dealing with the after-effects of backsurgery and post-op complications, including aninfection that kept him in the hospital for nineweeks. In fact, he's endured lower back pain foryears: "Being hunched over a guitar for mywhole life hasn't helped much." The pain gradual-ly got worse, until it reached a point where Hall

couldn't really lift anything - and eventuallycouldn't even walk. Not long afterwards, he wasoperated on to repair a spinal fracture.

After the surgery, "I couldn't play for a longtime. I lost the calluses on my fingers and themuscles in my left hand." Once Hall was againable to pick up his ax, he set up a daily regimenof practicing for at least an hour. "If I don't getat it every day, my hand reminds me." Thesedays, Hall plays sitting down instead of stand-ing, which took some getting used to. "It makesa bit of a difference, but usually I manage." Healso works with a trainer from his health clubwho is "excellent in knowing how to put a back together," helping with exercises and improvinghis posture.

Though Hall is approaching his 80th birth-day (Dec. 4), he views the back problem as a tem-porary setback and continues to gig regularly. He earned kudos for his recent guest turn withSonny Rollins at the tenor colossus' own 80thbirthday celebration at the Beacon ("Sonnysounded incredible," the guitarist reports).

One important reason not to slow down: Hallsees music as a vehicle for peace that can play apart in knocking down barriers and overcomingdiscrimination. "Music is something that bindspeople, something that has to be done together,"he says. "Band members might have their dis-agreements, but once they hit the stage, it allworks out." Something similar happens with thejazz audience, which, he points out, is oftenmade up of people of different nationalities, backgrounds and ages.

Hall has a birthday celebration gig scheduledat Birdland on Nov. 9-13. He'll also take part ina tribute concert in memory of trombonistBenny Powell, being held at Flushing Town Hallon Nov. 19.

"I cared a lot for Benny," Hall recalls. "Wewere in the Merv Griffin Show band at the sametime in the mid-60s. It wasn't a particularly cre-ative situation, just playing standard arrange-ments with the show's guests. But I'd recentlygotten married and wanted to get off the road. Icould take the subway to work and play withsome really good musicians." Count Basie andDuke Ellington were among the program'sguests during Hall's and Powell’s tenure there.

For the tribute concert, notes Hall, "We won'trehearse. We're just going to call some tunes. There are going to be a lot of poignant feelings inthe air, but it'll be fun."

Hall looks forward to working with othermusicians and to his daily practice sessions -and takes an active interest in the arts in gen-eral. However, he listens to music only occasion-ally. "I don't want to be influenced. I don't wantto get my brain stirred up without steering it ina particular direction." Sometimes, in search ofinspiration, he'll "tune the guitar funny, then tryto make something out of it. It makes you thinkdifferently and gets your fingers moving."

Jim Hall celebrates his 80th birthday atBirdland, on Nov. 9-13, with Greg Osby onalto, Steve LaSpina on bass and Joey Baronplaying drums. Then he'll join fellow NEAJazz Masters Jimmy Heath, Barry Harrisand Curtis Fuller at Flushing Town Hall onNovember 19, with bassist David Wong anddrummer Tootie Heath also part of theband.

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROWBill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be found at yourfavorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and

links.

Though Bobby Hackett was often associated with Dixieland and included the old tunes inhis repertoire, he didn't like the two-beat feeling that some Dixie rhythm sections played. Hepreferred four-four swing. When a bass player asked him whether he should play in two orfour, Bobby said, "Play four...it's twice as good as two." On another occasion, the drummercouldn't seem to avoid a two-beat feeling whenever the band played a traditional Dixielandtune. Finally, Bobby told him, "We're going to play 'Muskrat Ramble.' But you play 'Perdido,'and everything will be okay."

While Randy Sandke was rehearsing an original jazz composition, he heard somethingthat didn't sound right. He stopped the band and discussed what the drummer had beenplaying. The drummer said, "I thought you wanted sheets of sound there." Randy replied, "Idid, but I wanted clean sheets!"

A Moment You Missed by Fran Kaufman Hot House Contributing Photographer

Stopping bywith my camera at the sound check for SonnyRollins' 80th birthday concert at the BeaconTheater in NYC was one of those moments.Sonny's long-time photographer, John Abbott(who has just published a book of 100 photos he'staken over 20 years of the saxophone colossus)was the other photographer on hand.
