A MESSAGE FROM YOUR POTENTATE ILLUSTRIOUS SIR
Dear Nobles,
I want to say how thankful I am to every-
one for helping to make this year-end on
such a positive note. We had two highly
successful fundraisers bringing in an excess
of $80,000 profit to the Shrine. It took a lot of
work and fellowship and it was a joy to see
our brothers do what they do best. Thank
you again for your participation and hard
work.
I also want to thank the Nobles and UCO’s
for personally giving donations from their
hearts to help the Shrine in our time of need.
Hadi’s mission is important to all of us, and
I ask all those who are members or affili-
ates of the building and organization, if you
haven’t had the time or means to donate to
the temple, please do so at your first oppor-
tunity. There is still a need and every dollar
helps.
Co-vid is here to stay awhile, but I know
there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Unfortunately, it’s still a long journey through
to the end. With God’s help and the love of
those around us, we will come through this.
May God bless you and keep you all safe
through the upcoming holiday season.
Yours in Faith,
Stephen L. Hawes

2020 Most Amazing Care Anywhere
Hello, Ms. Hollywood!
Camille steps into Shriners Hospital for Children - St.
Louis on the first cooler day leading into fall with her mom,
Shantay, in tow. Ms. Hollywood has arrived.
The 3-year-old Evansville, Indiana, girl recently under-
went the first of what will be three limb-lengthening proce-
dures before she hits her teen years.
“When she walks into a room, she doesn’t have to say
anything because she just has this presence about her,”
Shantay said. “They like to call her ‘Ms. Hollywood’ here
because she’ll walk in with these shades on and just sort
of announce, ‘I’m here!’”
That Camille is able to walk in powered by her own two
legs is a testament to the Shriners Hospital physicians,
nurses and rehabilitation therapist who have cared for the
girl since she was an infant.
Camille’s dad, Bryan, said the birth of his daughter was a
shock. “(Her leg) looked as though it did not have a bone.
I was numb,” he said. “I couldn’t move.”
Within Hours, doctors in Evansville told Bryan that Shri-
ners Hospital could help. Three weeks later, Camille was
seen at Shriners Hospital for Children - St. Louis by Perry
Schoenecker, M.D., who treater her first for hip dysplasia.
“There was a thought that they might have to amputate
her leg.” Shantay said. “But Dr. Schoenecker had a wait-
and-see approach.”
When she was 1, Camille received a lift for her left foot.
She just took off and we knew nothing was going to stop
her,” Shantay said while holding Camille, who looked up
from the movie she was watching - Trolls World Tour - and
added, “I was crushing it.:
“Yes, baby. You were crushing it,” Shantay laughed.
But the following two years have been anything but easy
for Camille. She was diagnosed with tibial hemimelia, a limb-
lenght discrepancy. This rare condition affects the larger
bone in the lower leg, and sometimes, as in Camille’s case,
the patient might have extra toes.
Camille had her first limb-lengthening procedure on her
left leg July 7. As of mid-September, the leg had grown an
extra inch. She will have two more lengthening procedures.
By the time she is healed from the final surgery, her leg will
have grown an extra 6 inches from where it would have been
if nothing had been done.
“That’s a long way from amputation,” Shantay Said.

BY-LAW Changes - Proposal 1

In the early hours of May 17, 2017, a fire broke out at a
Michigan motel, the result of an explosion. Brian, his mother
and brother suffered injuries and were airlifted to a local hos-
pital. Brian’s wounds were significant, with burns covering
85% of his body.
Brian’s father, Robert, recalls being told his son had less
than a 5% chance of survival. Robert L. Sheridan, M.D., med-
ical director of the Boston Shriners Hospital burn service,
learned about Brian and knew that the Boston hospital staff
could help.
Robert explained, “Dr. Sheridan jumped into action and got
us medically flown to Boston. It was all his doing – his network
and the Shriners network. We were in a bad situation when
the Shriners called, and that’s how Brian’s life was saved.”
Members of the Detroit Moslem Shriners are an important
part of Brian’s network, providing emotional support as well
as financial assistance for transportation and housing related
to Brian’s medical care. They fiercely advocate for Brian at
every turn. Local Detroit Shriners routinely work with staff
members at the Boston Shriners Hospital to help with travel
arrangements to and from Boston, and check in often to offer
assistance.
In the past three years, Brian has undergone over 200
procedures and surgeries at the Boston Shriners Hospital,
including a tracheostomy. Scar tissue impairs his airway and
this procedure made it easier for Brian to breathe. However,
without further surgical intervention, there was a possibility
that Brian’s airway could close completely, taking away his
ability to speak.
Brian and Robert returned to Boston in August for a series
of procedures to open his airway and remove the tracheos-
tomy tube. This will give Brian more freedom and eliminate
the painstaking process of cleaning his tube regularly.
Doctors originally scheduled this surgery in April but had
to postpone due to statewide restrictions on certain surgical
procedures implemented because of COVID-19. Robert
said the family was heartbroken when they got the news.
“We have been trying to get this done for a very long time;
it was all set, and we had a date set.”
The family stays in close contact with Melissa Brown, a
social worker at the Boston Shriners Hospital who has been
working with them since Brian’s first day as a patient. “She
goes above and beyond her job for our family. She’s been
my rock through all of this,” said Robert.
Melissa stayed in touch with the family while they waited
for a new date. “Brian has made such incredible progress
in just a few years. His resilience and determination are
impressive, and I am honored to be a part of his care team,”
said Melissa.

TEEN WITH BURNS ON 85% OF HIS BODY RECEIVES LIFE-CHANGING CARE AT THE BOSTON SHRINERS HOSPITAL

“Brian approaches all aspects of his treatment with resolve
and a positive attitude. He always asks insightful questions
and knows how to advocate effectively for himself. Brian has
come a long way since 2017, and, as a medical professional,
it is heartening to see such progress after a significant injury,”
said Dr. Sheridan.
It has been a long journey. Shriners Hospitals for Chil-
dren’s mission is to care for pediatric patients regardless of
families’ ability to pay. Most of Brian’s surgical care can and
has occurred at the Boston Shriners Hospital. Brian’s family
submitted a request to their insurance company for the care
received outside of the Shriners Hospitals system, which
was denied. The family appealed, but the insurance provider
maintained that coverage would only apply if procedures
were performed in Michigan. Robert was not comfortable with
this because almost all of Brian’s care had been in Boston at
Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Brian and Robert wanted to work with Dr. Sheridan and the
care team who knew Brian best. Robert estimates that 98% of
Brian’s care has been through the Boston Shriners Hospital.
“Shriners has been there for us and has made things as easy
as possible. There is a level of comfort for Brian and that is
important,” said Robert.
When insurance would not cover any of the $150,000 Robert
would need to pay for the aspects of care that could not occur
at the Boston Shriners Hospital, he created a GoFundMe
account. The response was overwhelming. Within days, over
$150,000 was raised and Brian’s story had attracted national
media attention. The family also reports that, after additional
conversations with their insurance provider, some of Brian’s
treatment is now being covered.
Brian, 17, is a junior who loves swimming, fishing and all
sports. His favorite is basketball and he loves the Boston Celt-
ics. Robert described Brian as an all-around athlete prior to
the explosion – on the track, basketball and football teams.
He is an honor roll student with aspirations to work in the
field of burn care, possibly as a doctor or a social worker.
Brian has a message for his care team and all of his sup-
porters. “I would like to thank the entire Shriners community,
and everyone who came together to make this happen. It’s
truly amazing what the Shriners organization has done for
my family and me over the years. I am so grateful!” he said.
Robert has established the Brian Adams Foundation,
which will provide resources and connections for children
with burn injuries. He has also created a Facebook page,
Recovery4Brian, so people can follow Brian’s story.

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!! The members of Hadi Oriental
Band and their families hope that everyone had a joyous
fun-filled Holiday considering the circumstances that
we’ve endured this past year. I’m sure it cut into family
gatherings, visits, and getaways for everyone. Let’s all
Pray that this thing comes to an end soon so we can get
back to normal living.
The OB elected our new officers for 2021 at our
November business meeting as they threw me a curve on
a new slate but here, they are: President Jacob Gentry,
V.P. Kenneth Grant, Sec. Denis Gentry, Treasurer Terry
Eades, Director, and Quartermaster Jeremy Hoesli.
Nobles, we’ve elected a pretty good line here, so how
about we make an effort this year to support these fine
officers and our unit.
Many thanks to our Divan Rep David Bevins for keep-
ing us all well informed of what is happening within the
Shrine, as well as what’s been canceled or rescheduled,
and what events or activities are taking place here at
Hadi.
Our annual OB Christmas Party on Dec. 5th has been
unfortunately canceled by Vice President Jacob Gentry
due to the pandemic situation in our area. It was a hard
decision among the members not to have this event, but
we thought due to the situation surrounding us, it would
be the best for all concerned, and we sure didn’t want
anyone to get sick.
Our Bandsman of the Year was awarded to Gilbert
“Fuzz” Rohner and all our dedicated Nobles who made
that extra effort this past year during all this chaos to see
that we got our business taken care of and worked on our
booth. Thank you all, much appreciated.
Nobles, it’s that time of year again to pay your OB dues,
and I would appreciate it if we could do this in a timely
manner. I’ll be sending out due notices around the middle
of January, and my Brothers, I look forward to your
support once again. It’s been a tough year for all of us
here at Hadi, so what do you say let’s get this year started
off on the right foot; we can do this if we set our minds to
it; what do you say, lets getter done.
Nobles, since we had to cancel our GLSOBA Jamboree
last year, yep, you guessed it, I’m the returning President
again this year, so we’ll be hosting the Jamboree in June,
and we’re going to need you all to pitch in and help us
out.
Remember our sick and shut family and friends with
health problems, pray that they receive renewed bless-
ings and strength for a healthy recovery and protection
from this deadly virus.
Thank you to our outgoing President Logan Turpin for
his leadership and to all our supporting members for your
help during this rough year, but no worries guys, it’s got to
get better.
On behalf of Hadi Oriental Band, we wish our families,
friends, and all Nobility, a safe, happy, healthy, prosper-
ous New Year.

Hello Shriners,
I am Abigail Rahman the new Front Desk/Marketing Spe-
cialist, however, you can all call me Abi. Many of you have
already met me during the Hadi Half Pot and Gun Raffle
events. However, I wanted to officially introduce myself in
the December’s Hot Sands. I am a recent graduate from
IUPUI Herron School of Art & Design, where I majored in
Visual Communication Design with minors in Advertising
and Art History. Due to this background, I will now be han-
dling the Marketing/Graphic Design of the Hadi Shrine!
This month’s magazine is my first Hot Sands that I have
designed for the Shrine. I want to thank everyone for work-
ing with me and getting me all of the needed information on
time. So far, I have had a great time working with everyone
at the Temple. Being able to work with the Shriners and
design ads for them has been a great experience. I also
want to thank everyone for being so inviting and kind to
me. I especially want to thank Amy for being patient and
teaching me all the skills I need for this job.
The Hot Sands Deadline will remain the same as before.
Article Submission Deadline will be the 20th day of the
prior month. You can email your Hot Sands articles and
information to [email protected].
Thank you all for a great first month here at the Shrine! I look
forward to working with all the Shriners in the coming months.
