DANCING IN THE RAIN “It took about 30 days to get the number ready to shoot. We started rehearsing at the end of July and filmed in early September. We had four days to shoot and it rained for two of them,” Sims recalls. “The day of our dress rehearsal was sunny and perfect. The next day, it was pouring rain. We were squelching around in mud, so obviously we had to cancel. We ended up shooting in two days instead of four—half the time we’d allotted!”

TEACHING A GENIE TO DANCE“Friend Like Me,” was another choreographic challenge. “The Genie is magical,” Sims says. “In the animated film, the artists could make him do whatever they wanted—twist, morph, shrink, grow, disappear, replicate himself. I had to create that same magical feeling in real life with real bodies.” First, Sims put together a skeleton crew of 11 dancers to choreograph the basics of the number. “Then we started brainstorming ideas asking ourselves ‘What would be magical and how can we use special effects?’ It was so much fun.”

“Will Smith was great to work with,” Sims says. “He’s the consummate professional! He caught onto every move immediately, and then he’d bring the Genie’s personality to his interpretation. He was brilliant.”

“It was so much fun to work on this film. Everyone was so excited to be involved. There was this wonderful feeling of ‘I can’t believe I’m actually getting to do this!’ I think the audience will feel that same sense of excitement.”

Make Way for the DancersJamal Sims talks about the challenge and the fun of choreographing Aladdin, the new live-action film in theaters May 24th.

“I was thrilled when I was invited to choreograph the new live-action Aladdin,” says Choreographer Jamal Sims. “I have always loved the original animated classic and it was exciting to think about how to capture the film’s energy in live-action choreography.”

CHOREOGRAPHING PERSONALITIES According to Sims, choreography is a key element in the film’s storytelling. “Choreography, and movement in general, reveal so much about the characters’ personalities and emotions,” he says. “Sometimes we don’t need to speak to express ourselves. It’s all there in the way we move.” He gives Jasmine as an example. “There’s a number where Jasmine dances—in the animated film she doesn’t have that opportunity. In this number, she’s confident, assured. This is her world, what she knows. Aladdin’s reaction is ‘Wow, she’s not only beautiful, she’s strong!’”

Sims also points out “Prince Ali” is a musical number where choreography conveys strong emotion. “At the beginning of the scene, everyone in Agrabah is so excited about this big parade that’s approaching,” he says. “You can feel the townspeople’s growing anticipation and their sense of celebration in their movements before they even start to sing. This dance number was an enormously challenging scene to choreograph, rehearse and coordinate. It was the first dance number I tackled because it was so huge,” Sims says. “I knew it would take a lot of time to do it right. There are over 200 dancers and we had to figure out how to move them all down the middle of the street. At first, it was all a bit overwhelming. There were so many dancers, we didn’t have enough space in the rehearsal hall for everyone to rehearse at the same time, so we broke the parade into segments and took turns rehearsing each segment. Then we’d go out onto the set and practice over and over. Luckily, I had fabulous assistants who kept us on our toes and moving forward.”

“I wanted the choreography to capture the sense of energy, humor and joy of the classic animated film.”

—Jamal Sims, Choreographer

Bringing Life to Animated AnimalsYour favorite characters are brought to life as never before on July 19th in Disney’s The Lion King, directed by Jon Favreau.

DESIGN, MODELING AND MOVEMENTTransforming two-dimensional animal characters into three dimensions is a complex process requiring many intricate steps. All the characters were modeled from the paws up on a unique computer-generated modeling program. “Every single animal in the film is created this way. There’s not a single real animal in the film,” Jones points out. “Take each of these steps and multiply it by hundreds of creatures and you see how much care, attention and time went into the making of the film.” Once the character model design is approved, the model is sent to the rigging department. This is where artists use computer programs to place the bones and muscles under the skin with anatomical exactness so they can perfectly animate the movement of bones and muscles with each step the animal takes. They also have to perfect the movement of skin over the muscles. Is it sleek and smooth, stretched out as an animal leaps, bunched up as muscles are engaged to pounce? “It’s incredibly detailed. One of our biggest challenges was getting the dynamics of a running cub just right,” Jones recalls.

FUR CHANGES EVERYTHINGAnd as if that wasn’t tough enough—there’s fur. In fact, fur changes everything. “You not only have to think about how the skin is moving over the muscles, but how does the fur move with it,” Jones explains. “It’s a whole new level of

complexity. There are even special ‘groom’ artists who use their animation tools to create realistic details of all the animal’s fur. Is it soft and smooth, or scraggly? What length is it on different parts of the body? Mufasa was one of our most interesting challenges. His long flowing mane was practically a character itself!”

FUN WITH CHARACTER Everyone has favorite characters and film moments. “Obviously I love them all,” Jones says, but for him Timon and Pumbaa were stand outs. “They’re just so funny,” he says. “The animation team had so much fun pushing the animation to that edge between comedy and reality. We dug through reference of warthogs and meerkats to be inspired by what the animals really do and what idiosyncrasies we could find to make the performance feel spontaneous and natural.”

A BEAUTIFUL REALITY“Creating a film as complex as The Lion King, has been an incredible journey for everyone,” Jones concludes. Prepare to journey into the world of The Lion King as you’ve never seen it before when you use your Disney Rewards Redemption Card to redeem Disney Rewards Dollars toward Disney movie tickets at AMCTheatres.com or on the AMC mobile app.1 To learn more, visit DisneyRewards.com/AMCTheatres.

Imagine fur so soft and textured, you feel as if you could touch it. Muscles that ripple with movement. Roars coming from gaping mouths full of fangs so sharp, you recoil in fear. All that and more awaits you when the characters who debuted 25 years ago in the animated classic, The Lion King, return in Disney’s new film, directed by Jon Favreau. Majestic Mufasa, sly Scar, feisty Simba, mischievous Pumbaa and Timon and more are ready to spring to life in a way that makes them and their story even more real and powerful. “The Lion King is one of my favorite animated films,” says Andy Jones, Animation Supervisor for the new film. “It’s great that Disney entrusted Director Jon Favreau to revisit this film in a

way that combines the best of digital and live-action filmmaking techniques. It took such tremendous skill, dedication and knowledge, but the results are remarkable!”

RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH“We spent hours researching, observing animals in nature films and sketching at the zoo,” Jones says. “I was fortunate enough to go on a two-week safari in Kenya along with some of my fellow filmmakers. It was a trip of a lifetime. The animal interaction I witnessed was like nothing I had seen before. Being that close and getting to observe these animals in their natural habitat was truly amazing. I drew upon it often and shared the footage with the animation team throughout the production.”

Celebrate the Magnificent Spirit of The Lion King What better place to honor The Lion King than at Disney’s Animal Kingdom® Theme Park at Walt Disney World® Resort? You’ll find great sights, attractions and events worth roaring about!2

“It was a tremendous honor and challenge for me personally to bring The Lion King to life in a whole new way.”

All your Toy Story friends are back with an all-new story and some fun new characters, including—well—a “spork” (a combination fork and spoon). Meet Forky, a funny little fellow handcrafted by Bonnie from a spork, some pipe cleaners and googly eyes. When Forky suddenly finds himself in a room full of toys, he’s not even sure if he really is a toy—or how to act like one. So how did this unlikely DIY craft become a new star in a film full of established, beloved characters? “We were sitting in a story development meeting tossing out ideas, and we started talking about all the little craft projects our kids like to make,” says Director Josh Cooley. “We realized we had never had a plaything made by a child in the Toy Story films. It felt like a fresh and funny idea. At first, we thought ‘Okay, Forky has been made by Bonnie, and she loves him,’ so Forky would be over-confident and sort of cheeky with a ‘Bonnie loves me best,’ attitude. But then we looked at him from another angle. What if he is completely confused and insecure? Basically, he’s a disposable utensil. His whole purpose is to be used and thrown away. Suddenly, he’s a toy? What’s he going to do with that? He’s an outsider who doesn’t know the rules.”

That’s where Woody comes in. As the leader of the other toys, Woody has to mentor Forky. He has to teach him everything about being a toy. And he has to get the other toys to accept Forky. After all, they’ve never seen anything like him either. “The first scene where Forky is introduced to the other toys is so funny,” Cooley says. “There’s this huge disconnect between them. No one understands what Forky’s doing there—least of all Forky. Woody tries to explain and it’s just hilarious. The animators nailed that scene!”

The unique character serves up laughs in Toy Story 4 in theaters June 21st.

With Forky’s personality established, it was time to decide how he should look. “We pulled our entire crew together, put out piles of craft supplies and asked everyone to build their own version of Forky,” Cooley says. “Then we picked elements from the best of them.” The next step was animating him—not an easy task for a character with limited limbs. “Forky doesn’t even realize he has feet,” Cooley says with a laugh. “We wanted his movements to be clumsy and jerky. That’s not something our animators usually do. They are used to creating smooth, beautiful, realistic movement. At first, they were animating Forky too well. But once the artists got what we were going for, they just jumped on it and had a lot of fun with it. There’s a lot of comedy in Forky’s movements. It’s a huge part of his charm. He’s so simple, but so entertaining.”

Actor Tony Hale brought his own unique talents to bringing Forky to life. “Tony is an actor who’s very emotional, vulnerable and extremely funny,” Cooley says. “When we described Forky to him, Tony’s response was ‘Oh—insecure person. I can do that!’ We would record Tony first and then animate to his recordings. It was always exciting to see what the animators would do with Tony’s interpretation. He brought a lot to the character. I think Forky played a significant role in the creation of Toy Story 4,” Cooley concludes. “He gave us a fresh angle and the lift off the story

needed. He became our gateway to a completely new path. We see beloved characters like Woody and Buzz—characters we’ve grown up with ourselves—reacting to and interacting with someone who’s very different than them—who’s a bit of an outsider. When the first trailer aired, we received so many comments from people who related to Forky—who said ‘This character is ME!’ Forky is so innocent and unaware. He’s just a lot of fun!”

Picture this: A desk with a script on one side and a blank sketchpad on the other. That’s where the imaginative work of creating a film world begins. “The work always begins with the script. When the writing is great, the images really flow,” says Jim Clay, Production Designer for Artemis Fowl.

Based on the beloved book by Eoin Colfer, Artemis Fowl follows the journey of 12 year old Artemis Fowl, a descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds, as he seeks to find his father who has mysteriously disappeared. His search leads him to an ancient civilization of technologically-advanced fairies and pits him in a battle of strength and cunning against them.

After hours of research and sketching, Clay created mood boards, which he took to Director Kenneth Branagh, to see if his ideas reflected Branagh’s vision for the film. Once the ideas were honed, the long process of turning them into tangible reality began. And for this film, a huge part of it involved building a house. But not just any house. “The Fowl family ancestral home is a key location in the film,” Clay says. “It had to be huge. It also had to be historic, eclectic and contain elements of the Fowl family history. I looked

at the Gaudi houses in Barcelona for broad inspiration, as well as a lot of Victorian mansions. But the Fowl mansion is a conglomeration of many architectural styles. We didn’t want a structure that was too Gothic or scary. It had to feel warm, but also be weird and eccentric like the Fowl family themselves.” Additionally, the house also had to serve as a giant soundstage. That meant designing wider than usual hallways and doorways so camera and lighting crews could maneuver smoothly.

“It took almost five months from foundation to the final set decorations,” Clay says. Naturally, he’s proud of the entire highly-complex structure, but he does have a favorite room—the library. “It has 18-foot-high ceilings,” he says. “The set director sourced 4,000 original ancient books. It meant that Artemis could go anywhere he wanted in the library and pull out a real book—not a replica. It’s one of those touches that adds to the sense of reality.”

“While they’re watching the film, the audience may not think about our work. But if we’ve done our job properly, the locations we create will seem so real, they may think ‘Oh, I’d like to visit that place.’ Now, that’s a real joy for us.”
