ITB has come and gone and hotel data and analytics has evolved quite a lot, so we’re giving you a summary of what we found most interesting last month (so make sure you check out the whole Slideshare).

This month we cover the nerds at Airbnb, tips on getting better at Excel (yeah, never thought that would be coming from us, did you?) and more great “big data 101” this time from Bernard Marr. There’s also an excellent eBook taking data and analytics from the labs and back to hotel reality. And of course a TED talk to bring you back to the lab.

With so much happening in our industry and so little time, we hope this monthly recap helps keep you up-to-date. We hope you enjoy the read!

Regards,

Clay, Martin, and the SnapShot team.

Editorial A monthly recap of hotel data and analytics news

One of the overarching trends we noticed at this year's ITB Berlin 2016 was companies offering solutions to hotels to help

them better understand the huge amounts of data they have access to. These solutions are often a representation of that

hotel data in data visualization and analytics tools.

The next digital revolution brings plenty of

advantages for hoteliers. After all, new

digital capabilities are just another tool for

hoteliers to improve the guest's

experience. This first hand experience of

Jean-Francois Ott, a hotelier turned multi-

billion dollar investor (turned hotelier again)

is a great account of the changes in our

industry and what they mean.

Hoteliers & Opportunities Brought by

New Digital Tools

Many in hospitality use Excel on a daily basis. But like most applications, we stick to what we know. This highly informative

eBook on how to use Excel will show you some useful tricks you'll want to have handy. As the author correctly states, “You

may know how to plug in numbers and add up cells in a column, but that's not going to get you far when it comes to

reporting on your metrics.”

How to Use ExcelA Must-Have Guide

APIs play a crucial role in hotels, whether you

know it or not. As the interface between

programs, applications, and systems, an API

is they reason you can link your channel

manager with booking.com or check the

weather on your smartphone. In this blog

post, co-written with our Product Manager

Lead, Platform, we look into what Open APIs

are and why hotels should be using them.

Take a look!

What is an Open API? And Why Should You Care?

Here’s a great follow up to our introduction to hotel data and analytics. This list looks at various kinds of analytics and their

potential applications- defining business experiments, correlation analysis, visual analytics and 15 more related terms.

This is not just for managers but anyone interested in learning a little more about analytics.

The Key Business Analytics Every Manager Should Know About

Hello.

My name is Toni. As a former Director of Sales

and Marketing at several hotels I know how

important it can be to understand data.

So I recently joined ShapShot to help you do

exactly that.

A fascinating Ted Talk video about "deep learning," or how we're now using computers to process data at a level where

they can basically teach themselves. The repercussions for the hospitality industry and far beyond are huge.

Thankfully, there are no mentions of the Terminator.

From an average morning in the life of a

big city GM to use cases for data, this

eBook covers it all. It’s a great introduction

to how GMs can and should use data to

improve their day-to-day operations. Not

just informative tips but a look at real hotels

leveraging data and analytics. Any hotel

interested in doing the same should check

out this eBook.

Airbnb’s Insights from 5 Years of HypergrowthData science belongs everywhere at Airbnb

Airbnb is one of the hottest topics in our

industry. Their "disruptive" approach to

hospitality can teach a thing or two,

regardless of how you feel about the

company. One of their biggest resources for

growth is their forward-thinking use of data.

"Data is not numbers, it's people." That sums

it up pretty well. Read more on their Nerds

blog post about how data factors into just

about everything they do.

To celebrate their 10th anniversary, The

Hotel Yearbook has released the very fun

Hotel Yearbook 2036, which takes a leap

into the future to look at what hospitality

may look like in 20 years. Written from the

viewpoint of the year 2036, the eBook

presents 'eyewitness reports' from the

future: interviews conducted with fictitious

hotel industry executives, experts, and

guests, illuminating the dramatic changes

that hotel companies will confront between

2016 and 2036.

Hotels collect tons of data. We know this

already. But these vast amounts of data could

actually be leveraged by hoteliers to elevate

the quality of services they offer to new

heights. Even among analytics, technology is

developing at a breakneck pace. “The future

for data and analytics in the hotel sector is

limitless,” says our very own Michael Heinze.

Translating Big Data into Bigger Guest Value

In case you missed it, here’s our recap of the top stories in hotel data and analytics from last month.

Some great reads in here, including articles on finding the right analytics tools for a hotel, how data will transform business,

and much more. Until next time.
