John Glenn Remembered on ‘Yuri’s Night’ It may have been ‘Yuri’s Night’ - but John Glenn was not for-gotten at the annual Outer Space party held April 8 at the Great Lakes Science Center in downtown Cleveland. ‘Yuri’s Night’ is actually an annual celebration observed world-wide each spring in observance of Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gaga-rin’s first manned space flight on April 12, 1961. In reality, it’s a chance for an out-of-this-world party! Space geeks everywhere lift off each year for a night of fun, science fiction costumes and intergalactic partying. Cleveland’s Great Lakes Science Center hosted its 2017 ‘Yuri’s Night’ the evening of April 8 as the crowd partied into the night. Not to be overlooked, however, was America’s farewell to Ohio-born national hero and astronaut - John Glenn. Glenn was saluted in costume by an east side couple who want-

ed to honor Glenn and his wife, Annie. “We did this to honor a true American hero,” they said as they stood at the entrance to the new John Glenn Memorial Exhibit at the Great Lakes Science Center that opened on Dec. 9, 2016, the day after Glenn died. “He represented an America and its ideals that we wanted to recognize,” said the couple. “They are values that we need in our country today.” Fittingly, their tribute to Glenn came just a day after the late astronaut was given a final farewell in official ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery. With the Indians Opening Day and the Cavs Playoffs on the ho-rizon, there was excitement in the air at the Youth Challenge Annual Benefit & Auction on Saturday, April 8. Over 300 sports fans gathered at Ariel International Center in Cleveland to “Party Like a Champion” and support YC. Guests helped raise over $205,000 to fund free adapted pro-grams for children with physical disabilities and their teen volunteer partners. This support allows Youth Challenge to reach hundreds of children in the Greater Cleveland community, providing them with opportunities to play sports, make friends, and embrace their own unique abilities. Partygoers, many sporting Cavs, Indians and other team gear, enjoyed a fun evening with cocktails, themed food stations, silent

auction and raffle. Framed

New Police Officers The City of Avon is proud to announce the hiring of the city’s two newest police officers. Welcome to the City of Avon, Vincent and Ray!

Westlake Porter Public Library Introduces Laptops Anytime

Westlake Porter Public Library is now offering an option for indi-viduals who find themselves in need of a laptop while there: the new Laptops Anytime station. The machine offers six Mac Airbooks and six Dell PC laptops for in-house borrowing. All come loaded with Microsoft Office 2016 and Internet browsers (Safari for the Macs and Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer for the Dells). The laptops may be borrowed for up to six hours, but users may borrow another computer when their time expires if one is available. In addition, all borrowed laptops must be returned to the machine 15 minutes before the library closes. Customers only need to have a Westlake Porter Public Library card in good standing to borrow a laptop. (Good standing includes hav-ing a current address, phone number and email address on file as well as having no outstanding fines of more than $10 on the account). Using the machine is simple – just select the type of laptop desired, agree to the terms of use and scan your library card. To return a borrowed computer, just slip it into one of the empty bays. All laptops are wiped upon being returned to protect user privacy. They may be used only within the library and users will be charged for the replacement cost in the event of damage or loss while the computer is being borrowed. “We’re excited to offer Laptops Anytime to our library users,” said Library Director Andrew Mangels. “It means that they can now use a library computer anywhere in the library, instead of being tied to our electronic services area.”

There will be knowledgeable gardeners on hand to answer not only questions about the plants that are being sold, but also your gardening questions. For further inquiries, please contact JoAnne at (440) 934-6951.

On Tax Freedom Day, which happens every year about this time, the nation has earned enough money to pay off its total tax bill for the year, according to the Tax Foundation. But how can you free yourself from some investment-related taxes? For starters, contribute as much as you can to your IRA and your 401(k) or similar plan. Your contributions may be tax-deductible and your earnings can grow tax deferred. Roth IRA earnings are distributed tax-free if you meet certain conditions. Also, if you keep your investments at least a year before selling them, you’ll be taxed at the more favorable long-term capital gains rate. You might consider investing in municipal bonds, if they are suitable for your needs. The interest payments are generally exempt from federal taxes, and possibly state and local taxes, as well. However, some municipal bonds are subject to the alternative minimum tax. When charting your investment strategy, consider your risk tolerance, time horizon, family situation and so on. But investment-related taxes should also be in your strategic mix – so look for opportunities to keep these taxes under control. Project K-9 Helps to Raise Awareness &Funds for Westlake K-9 Unit

The Hermes Westlake Spring Fever run was held in conjunction with the Kiwanis pancake breakfast fund-raiser on April 9 at Westlake High School. Helping the Kiwanis raise funds at the booth for the Westlake Po-lice Department’s acquisition of police dogs were Grace Baker and Alyssa Gruttadauria. Grace is a 5th grader at DIS who bakes and sells her own dog treats in order to donate to the Kiwanis’ efforts. Alyssa is a sophomore at Westlake High School and is representing Northern Ohio at this year’s Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Program and will compete in June during Miss Ohio Scholarship Pageant week in Mansfield. The teen com-petition awards scholarships based on community ser-vice, grades, talent, and public speaking ability. As her volunteer service platform to promote, Alyssa chose the need for more police dogs in order to help deal with the current heroin epidemic. She created Project K-9 in hopes of helping raise awareness and funds for Westlake to add to their K-9 Unit, and she will be promoting her project at various Kiwanis events in addition to running fundraisers of her own. If interested in adding to the Ki-wanis’ ongoing effort to help the police K-9 unit, please send donations in any amount to Mr. Ray Budoi, Westlake Kiwanis, 23247 Maybelle, Westlake.

Bicycle Safety Day Ready to Roll at Tri-C Western CampusFree Bicycle Helmets Offered to Children Who Attend Event

The Western Campus of Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) will host its annual Bicycle Safety Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 20, to promote and encourage safe riding habits. Bicycle helmets will be given to children ages 5 to 12 while supplies last. Studies show that helmets reduce the risk of head and brain injuries in the event of a crash. Children who attend Bicycle Safety Day will learn about safe riding habits and proper helmet fitting. Participants also will get the chance to test their steering, braking and general maneuver-ability skills on an obstacle course. The family-friendly event will include free hamburger or hot dog lunches, plus entertainment and activities. Children and adults also can check out local safety vehicles as well as an emer-gency medical helicopter. The free event will be held rain or shine at the KeyBank Public Safety Training Center at Western Campus, 11000 Pleasant Valley Road in Parma. Bicycle Safety Day is sponsored by Tri-C’s Campus Police and Security Services. To register for the event, visit www.tri-c.edu/BikeSafetyDay. Call 216-987-0270 for more information.

Mercy Regional Hospital of Lorain hosted its annual Garden Blessing in honor of Earth Day last Friday. The celebration blessed the garden that benefits the Boys and Girls Club of Lorain. Sandi Domain of the Club joined with Nick Rapitis, Dir. Nutritional Services, and Cath-erine Woskobnick, vice president of mission and values integration, as they blessed the soil. Boys and Girls Club kids will be a part of a Health and Wellness garden club for the summer located at Mercy Hospital every other Wednesday. Sounds like fun!
