FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Friends of Monte,

Last Saturday the College had much to celebrate with more than 800 girls participating in multiple performances under the joyous creative direction and leadership of our Year 11 students, the emerging leaders of the Senior School. Mercy leadership was epitomised in the way that the Year 11 students developed their relationships with their peers. It was inclusive, service driven, motivating, spirited and a great deal of fun.

The incredible accomplishment of House Plays would also not be possible without the extraordinary support and guidance of Ms Jacqueline Magurren, Deputy Principal Pastoral Care, as well as the scores of teachers, parents and friends who contributed countless hours and skills to ensure House Plays was an overwhelming success.

It was wonderful to see College events such as House Plays, and this week’s College Athletics Carnival, which are testament to the strength of ‘sisterhood’, of our girls supporting their peers, as they displayed effusive joy in validation of the symphony of student talent across all Colour House ‘families’.

The greatest rewards are to be found when our girls generously share their gifts, whilst also sharing in the talents and achievements of others. College Captain, Adelaide Hayes described these rewards in an address to the students earlier in the year: “In encouragement, we find strength and cohesion. In supportiveness, we find connection and trust.”

We can be proud that our students and staff continue to develop a prodigious ethic of encouragement and supportiveness as they care for communities both globally

and locally. This year we have seen meaningful commitment and contribution to the students of Colegio Infante De Sagres in Maliana, Timor-Leste as well as the personal tutoring of younger students both here at Monte and at local schools. The Monte community again demonstrates our version of Mercy leadership as together we actively work towards the equality of opportunity for all people.

As we recognise National Volunteer’s Week, the College wishes to acknowledge those who have generously given of their time to our Monte community to assist us in our mission of caring and educating young women. Our volunteers are the shining lights that guide our mission and lead others to join the same path of Mercy.

God Bless, Mrs Nicole Christensen Principal

Orison Swett Marden

“It is the generous giving of ourselves that produces the most harvest. ”

Mrs Patricia Smith Head of HSIE Department

In HSIE, students are always learning something new, whether they realise it or not. A major contributor to deep learning for students studying HSIE subjects is the excursions outside the classroom. This helps to bridge the gap between classroom and hands-on experiences.

Year 7 History students mummified apples to gain a sense of how Egyptians did it.

Year 8History students met presenters from Living History Australia, they investigated what it was like in medieval times through interactive and engaging activities with stories and artefacts such as armour and clothing.

Geography students went to Camp Kendron where they engaged in fieldwork, looking at aspects of the bush, including foliage cover, soil depth and heights of trees.

Year 9History students travelled to the Quarantine Station in Manly. This was an extremely valuable learning experience and allowed the girls to further develop their knowledge of ‘The Movement of Peoples’ and settlement in Australia.

Geography students embarked on a field trip to Kurnell Peninsula, Botany Bay. They investigated the importance of oysters for maintaining and supporting the wetland biome.

They journeyed to the mudflats and explored the juvenile and mature mangroves where people literally got stuck in the mud. The students worked on developing geographical skills by using a light metre to measure the amount of light in juvenile and mature mangrove sites. They also used refractometers to test the salinity levels of salt, fresh and estuary water.

FROM THE HEAD OF HSIE

Year 10Long Reef Beach was the destination for Year 10 Geography students. Here they investigated environmental changes that have occurred over time and learnt how sand dunes are formed.

Students undertook field work such as plant identification using a dichotomous key, measured the wind speed using an anemometer, and also measured the angles of the sand dunes using clinometers and tape measures.

History students visited the Sydney Jewish Museum where they were privileged to hear from a Holocaust survivor. The girls valued the opportunity to learn the personal stories and memories of a Jewish boy growing up in the 1940s.

Students in Commerce visited Parliament House where they experienced both the lower house and upper house, and role-played debating a Bill.

This was followed by a visit to the Crime Museum at the Justice and Police Museum, where they were involved in a mock-trial learning about historical crimes such as the Pyjama Girl Murder, which took 10 years to solve.

Year 11Geography students embarked on an excursion to Sydney Olympic Park to undertake field work relevant to the unit of study, Biophysical Interactions. Students explored within the

mangroves; learning all about their functions and purpose. Throughout the day they learnt many new field techniques such as testing the pH levels of water and the humidity levels in the atmosphere.

Year 12HSC Legal Studies recently spent the day observing a range of criminal matters before the Supreme, District and Local Courts to supplement their understanding of the core topic of Crime. They experienced a range of matters, from high level and technical appeals on the severity of sentences for a murder conviction, to the somewhat more trivial matter of an alleged theft of a pair of socks from Woolworths. Justice Bellew of the Supreme Court and Deputy Chief Magistrate Mottle spoke with our students and gave them the opportunity to ask questions about the operation of the courts; adding another dimension that cannot be obtained in the classroom.

Upcoming Excursions and Events3 June Year 7 Geography - Lavender Bay and

Wendy’s Secret Garden

3 June Year 7 History - Nicholson Museum

5 June Year 9 Commerce 200 Hours - North Sydney Council

7 June IB DP History and Modern History - Study Days

17 June Year 11 Business Studies - Sydney Tower Restaurant

Participating in the same activity, day in and day out, is not an option for our students. The HSIE teachers seek new challenges for all courses so students can develop their visual literacy and “learn by doing” as they engage with people, places and buildings in new ways.

We invite members of the Monte community with expertise or interest in the HSIE subject portfolio who would like to speak with students, or share ideas on places of interest for student excursions to please contact me [email protected]

SR LECIA’S THOUGHTS

Sister Lecia Coombe RSM

Dear Readers

Ascension Day is celebrated in Australia on the seventh Sunday of Easter, which is 2nd June this year. Last night I watched “Call the Midwife” and cried all through it, at one with those witnessing the unbearable sadness of a beloved midwife passing away. Perhaps The Apostles wept too, when the risen Jesus finally slipped away from them.

After the event, these Apostles were reminded by “two men in white” (angels?) that this Jesus, who had been taken up from them into Heaven will come back the same way they saw him go. See First Reading Acts 1 : 1-11.

Psalm 41 says: “God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord”. The Apostles would eventually clap their hands in joyful praise of the Lord, now reigning over the whole world from his heavenly throne.

The Second Reading Hebrews 9: 34-38, 10 : 19-23 reminds us that in Heaven, Jesus now pleads on our behalf. When he comes the second time, it will not be to deal with sin, but to reward with salvation those awaiting him. Meanwhile, we too must guard our hearts, minds and bodies: “hearts sincere and full of faith; minds sprinkled and free from any trace of bad conscience; and bodies washed with pure water. Let us keep firm in the hope we profess, because the one who made the promise is faithful”.

ASCENSION

“Men of Galilee, why gaze in wonder at the heavens? This Jesus, whom you saw ascending into heaven will return as you saw him go.

(Acts 1: 11)

The Gospel Acclamation Matthew 28 : 19, 20 also applies to us: “Go and teach all people my Gospel. I am with you always, until the end of the world.”

The Gospel Luke 24: 46-53 gives the Apostles and us a resume of Jesus’ purpose on earth. Then as Jesus blesses them, he is lifted up to Heaven. Remembering his promise, they return to Jerusalem to make the first ever Christian Retreat of ten days, awaiting the enabling power of the promised Holy Spirit.

We may wonder how they spent these days. As well as going daily to the Temple to praise God, they shared their memories of Jesus, guided by Our Blessed Mother Mary (whose beautiful month of May has just concluded). I imagine she cared for their needs, delighting them with her beautiful presence, sharing her style of prayer with them, building up their faith, hope and love to prepare their body, mind and heart, for the momentous event of receiving power from the Holy Spirit to be faithful witnesses of Jesus, even to the ends of the earth.

Perhaps we could make next week special by setting aside a time and place each day for prayer with Mary, maybe in a Church, opening our hearts to the Spirit who empowers us also, but I quote G.K. Chesterton: “Visiting a Church does not make you a Christian, any more than standing in a garage makes you a car!” It is always the sincerity of a faithful heart that counts.
