Theme She Used to Be Mine, by Jessie Mueller, Waitress (Original Broadway Cast Recording)

You never realise how precious your loved ones are until it’s too late. From your first steps, to your first leap, the love that a mother and her child share is everlasting. As we flourish and see the world for ourselves, we forget to return to the one who showed us life as it is before we could speak. Our dance paints the story of a mother and a daughter from the beginning to the end. We illustrate the trials and tribulations of this relationship through independence and the reality of growing up.

The stimulus we were given shows a broken-down house in the woods in which you can see from the inside out. We interpreted the damaged house as the notion of a “once happy, now broken” family, and our dance tells the tale of one. We also wanted to communicate the same transparency of emotions like the visibility of the house within.

We explore these themes in our dance through presenting the dancers as different moments in life, these fluid and delicate movements portray the light in the world. As the dance progresses, we mirror the stages of independence, the reckless and sharp movements echo the shattering of relationships. The integrated lifts represent the desire to escape from the harsh reality of our corrupted world. Reaching the emotional climax of our piece, the freeing of hair along with the vivid and dynamic movements highlight the breaking point in which all burdens have been let go. As peace is restored in our lives, we realise that we must always remind people how much we love them, as tomorrow is never promised.

Theme The Untold, by Secession Studios

“Who looks outside, dreams, who looks inside, awakes.” - Carl Jung

Conjuring the notion that life is not black nor white, and may expose multifaceted problems within the human nature, Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung founded the field of analytical psychology in order to seek a realm of “empirical science” of the psyche. As musical artist Secession Studios produce an instrumental based off the ‘untold’, a parallel concept is revealed through our theme, exploring the ‘untold’ nature of humankind. How do people reach the true objective of life – to come to a realisation of oneself? Jung’s theory and our theme examines the process of individualisation, through the stages of the persona and shadow.

The first stage of the process of individualisation begins with the persona, the ‘mask’ people disguise themselves in for reasons of adaption or personal convenience. In the exposition of the dance, all dancers, who are wearing black, embody the role of the ‘persona’, where the continuous motif of masks is imitated through hand gestures. Following the stage of overcoming the persona, the repressed aspect of the personality arises – the unknown shadows. The dancers in blue symbolise the birth of the next stage, the shadow. Using circular yet retracted movements, this stage accentuates how paramount establishing and accepting the shadows within oneself.

Ultimately, after successfully overcoming one’s persona and shadow, the process of fulfilment by evolving through the stages of growing awareness of progressive confrontation and integration of personal unconscious elements is completed. The last two dancers, now wearing blue with white skirts, encapsulate the beauty and pureness of becoming a true individual in society. The process of individualisation has been reached.

To highlight the evolving process of Jung’s analytical psychology, the beginning and ending of the choreography is mirrored to illustrate the progressive order of each of the stages. The prompt given depicted a broken house, surrounded by shadows of tall trees. Secretly hidden within the house, a glowing garden was found. We correlated these to the fact that within a person (the house), we must endeavour to discover the authentic essence of an individual, despite how challenging its process may be. Essentially, our theme strives to state that we cannot change anything until we accept it. Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses.

THANK YOUHouse Dance has always been a thrilling event, one to always look forward to, and a night to remember and cherish. We have been so lucky and appreciative of having the opportunity to lead Schofield in House Dance this year. But all our collaborative efforts could not be achieved without the mention of some very important and special people. The Schofield House Dance and House Technical Captains would like to thank Ms Colthup, Ms Oliver and Mr Perkins. Your guidance and support in staging, lighting and choreography has been truly inspiring.

We would like to thank our House Technical Captains, Kelly and Jane, for their understanding and outstanding tech skills. Your energy and enthusiasm to be prepared, attend almost every rehearsal to plan tech, is admirable. The moral support and almost ‘telepathy’ we have developed through each other has truly helped how efficient and seamless the technical aspect has been.Thank you to our House Captains, Claire and Rachel, for always checking in on us and giving their outmost passion to help us.

Most importantly, thank you Ms Lyons for your continuous efforts and support in ensuring an exciting and smooth event to occur. Your organisation and contributions are always greatly appreciated. We have never met someone as hard working, organised and encouraging as you, so thank you very much!

Last but not least, thank you to all 76 of our HOT TO GO Schofield dancers! You have all been the main reason why we have enjoyed and looked forward to attending rehearsals, and we really appreciate every one of you! We are so incredibly proud of what we have achieved all together, we hope you have enjoyed House Dance this year as much as we have!

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to tonight’s circus, where we present a night of pure entertainment, never seen before talents and blasts of colours contrasting from a bright red to a shimmering black. An unpar-alleled show that can be enjoyed by both adults and children. But, abruptly, a dark and mysterious set of performers interrupt the show to elucidate their own unique talents and potential.

What will happen when the performers from both circuses are forced to share the spotlight? Will it end it disaster, or a true, elaborate, one of a kind spectacle?

Theme Youth, by Daughter

The piece was designed to represent the concept of time, and how one grows up throughout their lifetime. The question ‘what does it mean to grow up?’ has plagued the minds of many. As children we dream about becoming an adult, when you can make your own decisions and make your own path. However, once you reach supposed adulthood, it is easy to reminisce of your childhood, or your youth, as the title of the song suggests. You are not the same person that you were 20 years ago, 10 years ago, or even 5 years ago. The dance was composed to reflect upon these different stages of life, and how an individual can look back fondly upon their own journey of self-discovery. The stimulus of the piece was a picture of a dilapidated, aged castle whose exterior looked to be in deteriorating condition. This could be representative of time, as it is time that caused the building to age in such a way. The notion of time can also be represented in human beings, as we age and grow up in our lifetimes. Thus, phases of life are depicted and illustrated in the final dance piece. Each dancer in the piece represents a different phase in life, from childhood naivete to elderly wisdom. The dancer representing the latter stage of life can be seen reminiscing about her ‘youth’, looking back upon her past and the experiences that have shaped her. Everyone grows up differently and goes through different experiences. They get influenced by different events that ultimately lead them to become the person they are today. Each individual’s story is one of billions of different perspectives. Therefore, when she is looking back upon her life, she is looking back upon the moments that have shaped her, and her alone. Her experiences are uniquely hers, as are each separate individual’s experiences different. The dance encapsulates the at times fleeting nature of time, and how what we once thought abundant can become so precious. As an individual looks back upon how time has passed, it becomes clear that each and every experience is one to be treasured.

THANK YOUWe are extremely grateful to still hold House Dance this year, after a long year of being at home in 2020. We are exceedingly delighted to have such an amazing and lively group of girls, but we could not have done it without the help of so many people.

Firstly, we want to thank Lyons, your endless support throughout the entire process is greatly appreciated. You have supported us in every way possible, from organising rehearsal spaces to shopping for our costumes. We couldn’t have done this without you!

Secondly to our amazing house tech captains, Jess and Anastasia. Thank you for dealing with our lighting requirements and bringing our dance to another level. Thank you for coming to rehearsals, you have both done such an outstanding job with all the lighting elements which have pulled the dances together.

We also want to thank our friends and family for their continuous support, from picking us up from school to dealing with us when we are stressed. We hope you enjoy the performance!

Finally, to all 72 of our phenomenal dancers on stage tonight, we could not be any prouder at the way you have represented Lawrence throughout this house dance period. Theme Monster, by Shawn Mendez and Justin Bieber

The theme performance that we have prepared highlights the effect of society on youth as they grow up and are exposed to what the world is really like. Our stimulus, an old decrepit house amongst a flourishing forest, drove our narrative of a replication society and its effects on a young girl as she leaves her youth behind and is faced with a cruel world that appears to be green and thriving but destroys all in its path with its roots who are ultimately greedy and self-serving.

Our piece begins with illustrating a carefree younger self of our main character, as she is unaffected by the negativity and darkness that surrounds her. Moving through the piece, she is exposed and effected more and more to her surroundings, causing her to lose her innocence and become one with the mass that is society, while slowly breaking her inside. Our society is represented by our dancers with two-faced makeup, highlighting the deception that is society, which ultimately leads to our main characters demise.

Our choice of music illustrates a similar narrative, the effects of the entertainment industry on young people who just want to fulfill their dreams, and how expectations can break even the most strong-willed. So tonight, we leave you with a final question, will you be broken?
