8 HOUSE AND HOME June 2012

Across the country at different times of the year, local build-ers’ associations orchestrate a major and infl uential event for public consumption—the Parade of Homes. In our

region, the Acadian Home Builders Association holds its event in April followed by the Capital Region Builders Association in May. As part of the Parade, local home builders and their support teams work for many weeks and even months to prepare a vast com-bined selection of brand new homes to feature on the open-door tour. Their efforts culminate in a community-wide event that gener-ally spans two weeks or consecutive weekends and is attended by a public eager to witness trends in home design and material selec-tions, as well as professional resources. Fittingly, the homes on tour span a wide range of price, size and style.

I imagine one major reason the Parade of Homes is so successful in attracting many hundreds if not thousands of people each year is that it represents a rare opportunity to see a variety of attractive and available new homes in a single afternoon or weekend. And while we know that home tours have vast appeal, the motivation to visit Parade homes varies widely among the individuals who tour them.

For some tour-goers, there is the pure and simple motive to shop, identify and purchase a new home. For others, the Parade represents an opportunity to scope out workmanship by professional builders and craftsmen in the interest of a future building or remodeling proj-ect. Yet another group of people tours the often-decorated homes in an effort to gleam the latest styles prevalent in home plans, furnish-ings and related décor. Others tour the Parade of Homes for nothing more than its pure entertainment value. After all, many of us simply love to look at homes for no particularly practical reason whatsoever.

In this issue of House & Home, we bring you inside of eight homes we found to be particularly well appointed and furnished during the recent Parade events in Lafayette and Baton Rouge. What-ever your level of interest in the projects featured, you’re sure to fi nd some enviable features that translate into motivation for your own home search or future building, remodeling, decorating or entertain-ing project. Alternatively, you might fi nd yourself simply entertained. ■

A man builds a fi ne house; and now he has a master, and a task for life: he is to furnish, watch, show it, and keep it in repair, the rest of his days.

“Let our team of Certified Designers work wonders redesigning the space of your dreams. We plan the placement of amenities, cabinetry, storage and lighting... We can also help with the product selections for flooring, countertops, and paint colors. Let us show you

the difference space planners can make for your new construction or remodeling project.” - Richard Ourso, CKD, CAPS

Exceptional Designs for Kitchens, Baths and Outdoor Living Spaces

A:Traditionally, anyone interested in building

a home would need to fi nd a designer/architect to create construction drawings. Once the plans are completed, the project is put out for bid to various contractors before a selection is made. Hiring a design/build contractor means the client deals with one entity to both design and build their project.

As long as the design/ build contractor gives the client an

option to “back out” of construc-tion after the design phase is completed, I don’t see any dis-advantages to this arrangement. In fact, there are many practical considerations in favor of work-ing with a design/build contrac-tor. These range from more accu-rate cost estimating, overall cost savings and design fl uency from conceptualization to completion. The design/build scenario can save time in the overall project by eliminating the often time-

consuming process of gathering a variety of competitive bids.

Most clients are not construc-tion experts, making it diffi cult to identify potential builders who are best suited for their individual design project. In the design/bid/build scenario, clients often choose a contractor based on cost alone, which can lead to problems with quality.

A design/build contractor is better positioned to monitor goals of budget, schedule and

quality, ensuring they are car-ried out from the design phase through the project’s completion. Also, the design/build contractor is responsible for the whole proj-ect, simplifying communications with the client and eliminating the need to work with a variety of different contractors in order to get the project completed. Fi-nally, there is no chance of fi nger pointing between the designer and contractor, since they are one in the same. ■

Israeli Couscous Salad

As a cook, the approach to

and onset of summer always

excites me. Breaking the wintry

monotony of stews, braises, roasts and

other heavy dishes with a charge of clean,

crisp and refreshing flavors is like spring’s

revolution in the kitchen. However, after an

entire season of devouring heavy, sauce-

laden dishes, eating light can leave you

hungry for more.

I love salads and always have, for

some reason. I find them interestingly

refreshing, but unfortunately less than

filling which often leads to a topping

some sort of grilled meat or seafood

and a creamy dressing. This season,

I’ve been experimenting with some

unconventional salads. As I began a

routine of early morning running, I needed

to eat something light, but filling, in the

evenings. Eventually, this process of

trial and error led me to several basic,

satisfying ingredients for some really

fantastic salads: Israeli couscous, bulgur

wheat, brown rice, farro

and quinoa.

Israeli couscous seems

to pop in your mouth

like salmon roe whether

you serve it hot or

cold. I love it tossed

with some of my

family’s favorite salad

ingredients and served

alongside a juicy

roasted chicken.

One of my favorite

ways to enjoy bulgur

wheat is to make the popular Middle

Eastern salad, tabouli. Tossed with

a generous amount of fresh parsley,

tomatoes, olive oil and lemon juice, this

earthy salad has all the simplicity of

preparation with intense flavors that one

could desire from a meal so healthy.

Some time ago in my home, we

switched completely from white to

brown rice – and I couldn’t be happier

about it. Aside from the obvious health

advantages, brown rice just has so much

more flavor to offer than its more refined,

pale white counterpart. But it’s not often

that we associate brown rice as a salad

ingredient, chilled down and tossed with

savory marinated mushrooms, tomatoes

or spinach.

Farro is yet another ancient grain,

eaten for millennia, that’s become lost

among our supermarket offerings. But

for the health conscious, this easy-to-

prepare grain tossed with roasted peppers

and fresh mozzarella can provide the

perfect mix of energy with flavor.

Among all of these fascinating

ingredients, the tiny grains of quinoa

are my favorite salad accompaniment.

These micro seeds from South America

resemble sesame seeds in appearance

and somewhat in taste. Drained, chilled

and tossed with simple ingredients, the

unassuming quinoa is refreshing and

substantial.

If you crave something lighter yet

more substantial than just ribbons of

lettuce and tomatoes on a plate, try these

wonderful grains in your next salad. You’ll

be pleasantly surprised how splendid they

taste and how splendid you’ll feel. n

Shrimp & Feta Quinoa Salad2 cups water

1 tablespoon blackening spices

1 cucumber, seeded and diced

1-1/2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Juice of one lemon

1/4 cup feta cheese, crumbled

2 scallions, sliced

Kosher salt and pepper to taste

Combine quinoa and water in a sauce pot and

bring to a boil. Adjust to low heat and simmer

for about 25 minutes, until water is completely

absorbed. Chill the quinoa completely.

Meanwhile, season the shrimp and grill on a

barbecue pit or in a cast iron skillet until cooked

through. Set aside and keep warm.

Combine quinoa with remaining ingredients and

toss well. Adjust seasonings and serve. Top with

grilled shrimp.

Chef’s Note: When quinoa is cooked through, a

light ring will be visible on the perimeter of each

grain.

Yield: 4 servings

2-1/2 cups water

2 cups Israeli (pearl) couscous

8-10 grape tomatoes, halved

Arugula

2 portabella mushroom caps,

grilled and sliced

3 tablespoons Italian parsley,

chopped

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Juice of 1 lemon

2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar

(optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

Bring water to a boil, add

couscous and stir. Resume boil

then lower to a simmer. Cover and

cook for 8 – 10 minutes, stirring

frequently until cooked al dente.

Drain and chill the couscous.

Meanwhile, mix remaining

ingredients in a large bowl and

toss. Fold in the couscous and

rfrigerate for at least 30 minutes

before serving to allow the flavors

to meld.

Yield: 4 servings

Tabouli Salad3 bunches finely chopped flat-leaf parsley 1 cup chopped fresh mint 2-3 tablespoons fine bulgur wheat 1 chopped firm tomato 1/2 onion or 2 scallions, chopped 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice

Salt and pepper to taste

In a large bowl, mix bulgur wheat,

tomatoes, onions, scallions,

lemon juice, salt and pepper.

Add the parsley, mint and olive

oil and mix, adjusting seasoning

by adding more oil and lemon if

desired.

Yield: 4 servings

1 cup farro

8 ounces mushrooms, quartered

1 pound green beans, trimmed

and cut into bite-sized pieces

1/4 cup walnuts, coarsely

chopped and toasted

1/4 cup balsamic vinegar

1/2 teaspoon thyme, chopped

boil, reduce heat and simmer,

covered, until the farro is al

dente, about 20 minutes.

In a bowl, toss together the

mushrooms and green beans

with oil, thyme, salt and pepper

before transferring to a baking

sheet in a single layer and place

in the oven for about 20 minutes,

flipping vegetables halfway

through. Combine cooked

vegetables with faro and serve.

CANVAS I grew up in New Orleans and

attended Ursuline Academy. Later, I

graduate from LSU with a psychology

degree. I’ve studied abstract painting

under Allison Stewart and oil painting

classes at NOMA.

PRIMER I feel my artistic tendencies

began when I was in third grade and I

drew a fish unlike anyone else’s in the

class. I still have that drawing in my

studio. I have always been creative, using

my talents in many ways. Color and

design have always inspired me.

MEDIA My paintings are an array of

colors and textures blended with light

diffusion. I use plaster, acrylics and oil

pastels.

GENRE I enjoy painting abstracts

because there are no limitations. The

forms tend to come together as the

layers of color blend.

INFLUENCE Beautiful weather and music

influence my art the most. I love to leave

my studio door open, pick out some

music that suits my mood and paint

for hours. I also like to work on several

pieces at any given time.

DOLLARS & SENSE I prefer to create art

whenever an idea comes to me, but I’ve

been happy to do many commissioned

pieces for clients.

SHOW Currently, my art is shown in Baton

Rouge at Rue Cou Cou, The Foyer, Mercer

Studio and Yogalates II South.

AHEAD My future goal as an artist would

be to create something every day. I love

the feeling of transforming a blank canvas

into a mesh of colors and textures.n
