HOUSE OF PRAYER LUTHERAN CHURCH “Grow in Faith, Make Disciples, Serve in Love” FEBRUARY 2020 VOLUME 13 ISSUE II At our Annual meeng on January 26, we received the excing and wonderful news that House of Prayer has paid off its mortgage! Thanks be to God, and thank you to members both past & pre- sent who have contributed to the church to make this dream a reality. We connue to move for- ward as we "Grow in Faith, Make Disciples, and Serve in Love." So now that we are mortgage free, what comes next? We all certainly understand that we have been blessed in many ways as a congregaon, and this is just one more way that we experience the goodness of God. In the 12th chapter of Genesis we read of the me that God called Abraham to be the father of a great naon. In that calling, one of the promises that God makes is that He will bless Abraham so that he will be a blessing to others. In many regards, House of Prayer is sing in the same posion as Abraham. We have been blessed, and now we have to figure out where the Holy Spirit is calling us to move, and which direcon we should take in order to bless others in our congregaon, community, and world. This month in worship, many of the themes that we will encounter focus on this idea of being blessed, and allowing our lights “to shine before others, so that they may see God’s good works and give glory to the Father in heaven.” (Mahew 5:16) Come discover God’s plan for you and for the church. There are many opportunies waing to be uncovered that will assist us in sharing the love of Christ beyond our walls. It is important that we listen to God’s call ourselves... and to re- spond faithfully. See y’all on Sunday, Pastor Eric Youngdahl

At our Annual meeting on January 26, we received the exciting and wonderful news that House of Prayer has paid off its mortgage! Thanks be to God, and thank you to members both past & pre-sent who have contributed to the church to make this dream a reality. We continue to move for-ward as we "Grow in Faith, Make Disciples, and Serve in Love." So now that we are mortgage free, what comes next? We all certainly understand that we have been blessed in many ways as a congregation, and this is just one more way that we experience the goodness of God. In the 12th chapter of Genesis we read of the time that God called Abraham to be the father of a great nation. In that calling, one of the promises that God makes is that He will bless Abraham so that he will be a blessing to others. In many regards, House of Prayer is sitting in the same position as Abraham. We have been blessed, and now we have to figure out where the Holy Spirit is calling us to move, and which direction we should take in order to bless others in our congregation, community, and world. This month in worship, many of the themes that we will encounter focus on this idea of being blessed, and allowing our lights “to shine before others, so that they may see God’s good works and give glory to the Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16) Come discover God’s plan for you and for the church. There are many opportunities waiting to be uncovered that will assist us in sharing the love of Christ beyond our walls. It is important that we listen to God’s call ourselves... and to re-spond faithfully. See y’all on Sunday, Pastor Eric Youngdahl

QUILTING OPPORTUNITIES THIS MONTH

The schedule for January is: • Wednesday, February 5—9am until noon • Wednesday, February 19—9 am until noon Quilt tops are made by members of the congregation. To learn how to make a quilt top, go to: https://lwr.org/get-involved/quilts.

On these meeting days, we simply put down a sheet, add batting, put the quilt tops on and then tie the three layers together with crochet thread. We can always use more help, so feel free to join us no matter your skill level. We can also use material to use for making quilt tops if you have scraps that are looking for a home.

CHRISTIAN YOGA—February 6 and 13, 5pm

Even though February has one more day this year (the 29th), we will be have fewer Christian-based yoga classes this month. Each week's class has a different theme, feature posture-taught for vari-ous skill levels so if you've never been, now is still a great time to attend Christian-based yoga and meditation classes at House of Prayer. Classes will be held on the following Thursdays: February 6th and 13th at 5pm in the Sanctuary.

Take time as lent approaches to connect in a new way with our Lord and Savior. Again, I mention that each class is instructed with modifications for various levels of participation. The class is scheduled for one hour. Classes begin with a centering prayer, focuses on a theme or posture that is linked to scripture, and classes end with a Christian meditation and closing prayer. Each week is a new opportunity to bring your love for Jesus to your yoga mat. Live fully through your breath and movement. Even if you never tried yoga before, please consider exploring these clas-ses that link the Lord with your body, mind and spirit, by attending Christian Yoga and meditation classes early in the month of February and then practice what you have learned at home until we meet for future classes. Invest in yourself by purchasing some yoga essentials: a yoga mat, two yoga blocks, and cotton woven yoga strap. These sup-plies can be found at Walmart, Target, Dick’s Marshall’s, on Amazon, etc. Please contact Wanda Przymus if you have any questions. Cost-- Free will offering.

The next Family Promise of Clear Creek hosting round for House of Prayer is Sunday, February 9 through 16. Please use the Volunteer Link to sign up where you are able. There will also be a sign-up sheet in the narthex. More information on the families will be sent out as the week of February 2-9, 2020 gets nearer. Thank you again for your support of our mission! We will meet on Tuesday, February 25 at 7:00 pm upstairs in room 207 and continue our stud-ies from Gather magazine. The following is from their website: Winter 2020: “We are called!” by Kathryn A. Kleinhans. Reformer Martin Luther used the word “vocation” or “calling” to refer to all aspects of human life. We are called to respond to God not just in our personal relationship with God but in our relationships with family and friends, in our work, and in our communities. This four part Bible study will explore stories from both the Old and New Testament. As we reflect on how our biblical forebears heard and responded to God’s call, we will gain insight into how God is calling us—and how God may be calling others through us. — SESSION 2: We are Called! In the January study, we look at the call stories of several Old Testament prophets. In February, we move to the New Testament to reflect on being called by Jesus. First, we will consider how Jesus called disciples during his earthly ministry. Then we will look at the story of the risen and ascended Jesus calling Paul. Then we will reflect on Jesus’ invitation to all of us to take up the cross and follow him. About the author: The Rev. Kathryn A. Kleinhans, Ph.D., serves as dean of Trinity Lutheran Seminary at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. All are welcomed! Please enter using the side door.

BIBLE STUDY—Tuesday, February 25, 7pm

The book for February is Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell. The Book Club meets in room 207 at 7:30pm — How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? Talking to Strangers is a classically Gladwellian intellectual adventure, a challenging and controversial excursion through his-tory, psychology, and scandals taken straight from the news. He revisits the deceptions of Bernie Madoff, the trial of Amanda Knox, the suicide of Sylvia Plath, the Jerry Sandusky pedophilia scandal at Penn State University, and the death of Sandra Bland---throwing our understanding of these and other stories into doubt. Something is very wrong, Gladwell argues, with the tools and strategies we

use to make sense of people we don't know. And because we don't know how to talk to strangers, we are inviting conflict and misunderstanding in ways that have a profound effect on our lives and our world. In his first book since his #1 bestseller, David and Goliath, Malcolm Gladwell has written a gripping guidebook for troubled times.

BOOK CLUB—Thursday, February 20, 7:30pm

HoP member Nanette Hlavaty shares her knowledge and passion of making cards. You can take some home and leave some for the church to use. The classes are typically on selected Thursdays in room 210 (Fellowship Room.) She has most supplies so you just need to bring scissors, paper cutter and tape or glue. If you haven’t tried a class and would like to attend, contact Nanette Hlavaty to include you in the group texts.

This past year has been a tremendous journey through Brian McLaren’s book, “We Make the Road by Walking.” We all were afforded the opportunity to dig into this book, whether it was on our own in the comforts of our homes, or together as a group in Adult Sunday School. Either way, all who participated reflected on scripture and how it pertains to us today, carving a path of stronger faith for each one of us. Beginning Sunday, March 8, we will begin our next year long study as we explore Barbara Brown Taylor’s book, “Home By Another Way.” Our March messenger will provide more details, but we wanted to give everyone ample time to secure the book in time for the official launch date. We hope you all plan on participating in this next go ‘round!

Worshippers will have the opportunity to receive ashen crosses on our foreheads as we hear the words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” This is a symbol of our own mortality and a reminder that God loves you just as you are. We will also participate in the sacrament of Holy Communion. Join us… and come as you are.

Thanks to all of you for your continued generosity. New items needed for donation are underwear. Sizes most needed are underwear for large children and men.

REVERSE ADVENT CALENDAR RECAP

Our 4th annual Reverse Advent Calendar project is complete, and 639 items have been delivered to Interfaith Caring Ministries. Among our donations were 265 paper products (the paper towels and toilet paper were particularly appreciated!) and 277 food items. Special thanks to Sue Noggle for spear-heading this effort, and thank you all AGAIN for your generosity!
