grinding to direct trauma, stress, postural and neck problems. Sometimes the problem is related to the positioning or absence of teeth. Symptoms may also include ear pain or blocking, tooth pain in a dentally healthy tooth, headaches, facial pain or even swallowing discomfort.

Heads Up Physiotherapy has been established at 64 Troughton Rd Sunnybank to provide a much needed, very effective treatment option for jaw problems and headaches to the local community. Jaw pain and headaches often occur together. Jeanne Read has training in both these areas. She has treated jaw problems for over 20 years and is also skilled in Dean Watson’s highly effective headache and migraine techniques.

Some jaw problems can be treated in only a few visits plus advice and a home program. Complex conditions can require more lengthy

intervention and possible referral to dental or medical specialists. Addressing assessment and treatment from both TMJ and headache perspectives will have a better outcome.

8 Ways to Improve your Properties Security

For a home security system with no installation fees consider adopting a dog, although sometimes you might need the upgraded model.

Get to know your neighboursYou can ask them to watch your house while you're away. That way, any unusual activity will be noticed.

Keep your garden TidyA messy garden gives the impression that no one has been home for a while.

Put timers on electrical appliancesIf you are away from home on holiday it can be a good idea to use electrical timers to give the impression someone is home. Your local hardware store will stock a range of timers to suit your needs. Put them on selected lights, maybe the bedroom and kitchen. Set them to mimic a typical evening of pottering around and TV watching. It will make a good deterrent for anyone

considering breaking in.

HouseProud [feature]

Invest in security screensInstalling security-grade screens is a smart investment. Not only will they secure your home but they will also act as a deterrent for break-ins.

Make sure to purchase sturdy high quality security screens. They should be robust enough that they cannot be kicked in or removed by force.

Anything that slows down an intruderwill make it easier for someone to spot them loitering around your house rather than them slipping in unnoticed through a cheap, easily removable screen.

Have an alarm system installedGood quality alarm systems mean your home is ALWAYS protected. They can lower your home insurance and most have smart phone or remote control access. Also visual signs of a security system like a sticker or cameras will often ward off intruders.

Want a safer, more secure home? Here are some simple ways to improve your properties security.

Fit deadboltsto your doors

Put paddlocks on your side and back gates.

colour scheme. To achieve this pair blue with whites, creams and lovely light or white stained wood for a seashore style.

Bright yellow paired with deep blues and greys makes for a beautiful combination that is quite on trend at the moment.

Make your larger focus areas such as sofas, curtains or walls blue then add yellow accents like lamps, rugs or pillows.

Solid red accents such as light shades, lamps, rugs, tables and chairs balanced next to crisp white and black items make for a sophisticated room.

A common style mistake is to overpower the room with red. If you choose to go for red walls make sure to balance them with neutral furnishings for a cosy inviting interior.

Aim for the classic chocolate shades, leathers and medium warm toned woods to compliment your red walls or furnishings.

Our 5 Top Tips1. Choose colours that reflect your personality. Let go of basic beige and express yourself.

2. Choose your favourite colour and mix and match from the same colour family.

3. One colour does not equal boring. Use different fabrics, patterns and textures. That one dash of colour can make for a nice simple and modern appearance.

4. Have a favourite piece of homeware? It's probably your favorite because of its colour, so use it as a base to decorate around.

5. Instead of painting the walls with your bold colour, incorporate bright coloured homeware items.

Yellow should be used sparingly, too much can be over-stimulating and

distracting. Just enough, however, will make your home a bright and inviting space.

Whether you prefer a shade that's soft and buttery, or one that is as brilliant as the summer sun, this warm, happy shade is an ideal accent colour.

Pair your sunny yellow with shades of grey, white and cream. If grey is not your thing then pair yellow with blue and a greyed brown. For something a bit more ambitious contrast your mustard shades of yellow with a beautiful teal.

Which colour will you choose?

Gold, canary, amber and mustard.

Yellow is an uplifting, energizing colour.Welcome this happy colour into your home

for a hint of sunshine.

Pair yellow with white to help that colour stand out.

Both light and dark woods compliment this colour, just be sure to stick to one shade.

August is renowned for strong winds and heavy leaf fall. Keeping your gutters free from leaves can be time consuming and dangerous. The SES reminds homeowners each year to keep their gutters clean prior to the storm and bushfire season.

Leafshield Gutter protection will prevent stormwater from entering your roof cavity from either blocked gutters or valleys. Insurance companies and repairers say that many homes could have prevented internal water damage and bushfire risk if their homes had been guarded.

With increased occupational health and safety risk, landlords need to make sure their tenants aren't risking personal injury when it comes to climbing onto the roof.

Valleys are often overlooked, but if leaves and debris build up there, water can be forced in under tiles or corrugated iron roofing sheets and you can end up with all sorts of problems. We offer our customers a range of products to keep valleys and gutters flowing beautifully in the heaviest of down pours. Our ski slope installation system allows leaves to simply slide off the roof instead of blocking the gutters.

Leaf Shield has been installing since 1995, and started out with just a polyethylene mesh to offer its domestic and commercial customers. We soon realised people were calling for a variety of gutter guard meshes to provide the best solution for every leaf & roof type. Each mesh providing a different solution including: maximum water collection, bushfire protection and vermin proofing (including birds, rats, snakes & possums). According to the CSIRO, the thick

and strong diamond aluminium mesh has a flammability index of zero, meaning it will not allow burning embers from a bushfire to start a fire in your gutters. Leaf Shield's fine leaf stainless steel and aluminum mesh is rated one, giving excellent protection in the most extreme bushfire situations while also keeping out the smallest debris, including Pine needles and Jacaranda leaves.

Cleaning gutters is dangerous so Leaf Shield offers a free gutter clean with every installation. All our fitters have white cards and have many years of experience installing gutter guard working at heights.Leaf Shield products come with a 15-year warranty when installed by Leaf Shield fitters, Buyers can install the product themselves, but we prefer to do the installation because then we can stand by our product for the life of our warranty knowing it's been

fitted correctly.

Queensland State Archives, located in Runcorn, is a hidden treasure-trove of information on the history of our state. Located within its walls are over 50 kilometers of records that include convict records, school registers, war records and family history.

I was impressed by the sheer scale and volume of records that are managed and preserved by the State Archives.

Queensland State Archives was kind enough to take the time to

answer some of my questions on how they are able to engage the local community and its members.

I was able to expand my understanding of the facilities and services that the Queensland State Records provide to the community. In addition to the preservation and management of records for future generations, Queensland State Archives provide multiple services available to the public including the Public Search Room.

This facility assists researchers to find and access the records they are looking for, and during opening hours, there is always an archivist on duty who is more than happy to assist in guiding you in your research.

I was interested in learning tips on where to begin my family history research. To get started, searching the online catalogue was the first point of call; however I recommend you have a basic knowledge of your family tree to help you find what you are looking for.

The catalogue is a very large database that contains the records that have been digitized. Here I was able to find all sorts of records such as passenger lists

high demand.

Future proofing the state’s digital records

Digital and online technologies provide new opportunities for greater access to the

Well the Queensland State Archive centre may be able to help, they can assist you find some interesting facts on the past life of your home or property. You never know when this interesting information could come in handy; it would make interesting dinner party conversation!

What I found most interesting was the original hand drawn architecture drawings, some of which detailed various council buildings in Brisbane. I could have gotten lost in these documents for hours! They were so detailed and the time and skill that obviously went into these drawings was amazing!

Another interesting record I came across was the hand-written enrolment records for state schools in the local area from over a hundred years ago! It was fascinating to see the beautiful handwriting that recorded family names and local residence. If you or your family are looking for records that will create a personal connection between you and your ancestors, this is the way to go!

What you may find can create connections between the past and present and help you to discover your family's story.

Do you own an older home? Have you thought whether your walls may have a previous history that you would like to uncover? Or ever found yourself wondering who has walked the halls before you did?

Puppy Survival Guide

Checklist Before bringing your new puppy home make sure you have everything they will need.

A comfy bed - make sure its secure and washable in case of accidents.

Food & water bowl - ceramic or stainless steel are the best. Purchase one that is suited to your puppies size NOW not their adult size.

Good quality food - try & keep your puppy on the same diet & make sure to use good quality food for at least the first year while your

puppy grows.

Worming tablets & flea control - suitable to their age and weight.

(always read the label or consult your vet)

Toys - for training & teething get a mixture of textures and toughness.

Light weight collar/ lead/ harness - to get your puppy accustomed to wearing them.

Micro-chipping - ensure your puppy has a microchip with up to date details so if they get lost you know they will be returned safely.

Toilet training aids - stain/ odour

remover & puppy pads.

Brush & nail clippers - grooming builds trust between you and your puppy.

Registration - register your dog with the local council or you may face a hefty fine.

HouseProud [feature]

VaccinationsIt is important to vaccinate your puppy so they are protected from potentially fatal viruses. Because their immune systems have not fully developed yet they are especially susceptible to Parvovirus (Parvo) and Distemper virus.

Your puppies first vaccination happens at 6 weeks of age - this is before you receive the puppy as they can't leave their mothers until 8 weeks of age.

Two booster vaccinations are required to generate enough immunity to fully protect them. Your dog will also require a yearly vaccination to provide continual protection.

2nd vaccination - 9 weeks of age. (They can also get their first heart worm injection.)

3rd vaccination - 12 weeks of age. 10 - 14 days after this your puppy can be taken to public areas and explore

its surroundings.

De-sexingYour puppy can be de-sexed from 5 - 6 months depending on your vets recommendation. It is important to do this unless you plan to breed your dog.* Registration is cheaper for de-sexed dogs.

Puppy TrainingDuring the first 16 weeks of your puppy's life try and introduce them to as many things as possible. Learning at this age is permanent so it's the

perfect time to start training. Training

should begin as soon as your puppy comes home. Teach them their boundaries in the house & make clear where they can pee, eat and sleep. Toilet training tip: if your puppy pees inside do not yell, they will not understand what they have done wrong and therefore will not learn. Puppies have little control over their bladders, when your puppy pees simply take them to the correct toilet spot. They will pick it up eventually. The key is to be consistent & patient.

Especially if they are the only dog at home, you want them to learn from a young age positive socialising behaviour. Not socialising or training your dog from a puppy can cause behavioural problems and aggression.

InsuranceIt is a good idea to obtain pet insurance as soon as you bring your puppy home. This will cover them for all those unexpected situations and any conditions that might arise

later on.

Puppy pre-school is the ideal way to

both train your puppy and increase

their socialisation skills.

As a new puppy owner myself I understand that the idea of a puppy is very different to the reality. There are many things you need to do as a responsible pet owner to keep them safe, healthy & happy. While they might be a lot of work, they are also the most loving & loyal pets you can own and you will not regret letting one into your heart & home. We have created a little checklist with all the essentials your puppy will need to help you start off on the right paw.

QA&

Howard GroosPrincipal of Professionals

& QLD Licenced BuilderEmail [email protected] with your questions

All advice given is general in nature. Please consider carefully if this advice is appropriate for you. Please note we are unable to respond to every question.

When buying a new home, what upgrades should we go for? What holds the most value? Do we upgrade the lot? Pick more square footage in the house? Add an extra bedroom? etc.

- Graham, Calamvale

It depends on why you are buying the house. Are you buying it as a home to live in or as an investment?

For the most part, upgrades are high-profit items for builders. They aren't designed to enhance the value of the house, but make you happier with the house you do buy.

If you are looking at your home as an investment, then you buy the smaller to medium sized homes and spend only a minimal amount on upgrades. If you are looking at your purchase as a home, then you select upgrades that will enhance your quality of living. One rule of thumb is to always upgrade the carpet and re-paint the interior.

- Howard

I am looking for my first rental property, I have no previous rental history or references but all the applications ask for this.

What do real estate’s look for when reviewing an application and how can I obtain a rental with no previous renting history?

- J Hayes, Underwood

As with any rental application past history is a very important consideration. Having said that we will happily consider a tenant new to renting.

It is just a case of providing suitable employment references and personal character references to show you can both afford the rent and are of good character.

Any good property manager will guide and help you through this process. - Howard

Hi Howard, I am about to move house and was wondering if it is better and more cost effective to hire removalists or just hire a truck and move myself?

- Mark, Runcorn

In my time I have done both methods. Using mates with utes appears cheaper but I found by the time they have made multiple trips with you paying the petrol it wasn’t that cheap.

Hiring a truck wasn’t much better unless you have an HGV license to drive a big enough truck to take everything. Plus you still have to do all the packing and lifting at both ends.

The last time I moved I just hired a professional removalist. No work, no hassle and no breakages. One trip, all done. The difference in cost made DIY really not worth the effort. - Howard

ars roll in with headlights dimmed, engines purring and back seats piled high with pillows & kids. Here you can see 2 movies for less than the price of one, there's no babysitter needed, there's no need to dress up and there aren't any parking worries. Clutching checked rugs and candy, youngster's pile out of cars as parents set up outdoor furniture beside small steel-encased speakers dating from the 1950's.

Once the parking parameter is established the next port of call is the Candy Bar, filled with the scent of sweet syrupy popcorn and choc tops. Kids, as kids have always done, are out of cars and heading for the Candy Bar in minutes. Holding hands

& laughing they return carrying hot dogs and popcorn, wearing the sort of smiles kids wear when they are allowed outside at night and the air is full of wonder.

With no dress code rules, attire varies from shorts and thongs to cocktail wear. And some have been known to arrive resplendent in one-piece pyjamas, finished off with fluffy dog-eared slippers.

As the sound of 'Rock Around The Clock' fills the air, and chunky speakers are attached to wound down windows, couples sit in cars, heads close together, quite shadows in the night, as the BIG Screen winks at them from above.

This strange feeling of nostalgia and yesteryear is what keeps the Yatala Drive-In Movie Theatre alive.
