2-3 Year-Olds
Carry in the news paper Put clothes in clothes-hamper Place toys in toy-box Put away books and magazines Put (pre-sorted) puzzle pieces in respective bags or boxes Give treats to family pets
4 to 5 Year-Olds
Make own bed Fold towels and wash-cloths Empty small trash-cans Sort dark and light-colored clothing for laundry Help pick up debris from the yard and haul leaf-filled bags to central location in yard
Help water indoor and outdoor plants
6 to 8-Year olds
Load and unload dishwasher Dust low-level furniture Vacuum Help walk and feed pets Put grocery items away Wake up by him or her-self in the morning with an alarm clock Help rake leaves Help prepare dinner—open packages and pour contents into
bowls, tear-apart lettuce etc.
9 to 11 Year-Olds
Plant flowers Assist younger siblings with homework Fold all of own laundry and put away Groom pets Gather trash and take receptacles to curb Organize closet and drawers Help wash car Sweep sidewalk and drive-way Help determine and prepare simple menus for the week
12 to 14 Year-Olds
Change bed-sheets Use washer and dryer for own clothes—this includes folding and
putting away clothing Mow yard (with supervision), spread mulch Independently prepare entire meals such as grilled cheese/baked
beans/sliced fruit Clean entire bathroom—toilet, sink, bathtub Babysit siblings for short periods of time Mop and sweep floors
15 Year-Olds and Older
Babysit siblings for longer periods of time Help run family errands (if driver’s license is applicable) Balance personal check-book Plant flowers and help plant bushes Clean out the fireplace House-sit for reasonable amount of time (dependent on maturity-
level) while parents are out-of-town
