8/8/2019 Housing Surplus
1/1
WHILE hundreds of houses are planned tobe built in new estates, a sizeable surplusof existing houses are up for sale in MountGambier, which could lead to the buildingsector grinding to a halt and many homeown-
ers hoping to sell left st randed and waiting foryears with their properties on the market.
Over 600 houses in the Mount Gambierdistrict listed on realestate.com.au illustratethe current competitive and sizeable marketin which agents and homeowners are attempt-ing to sell, while recent increases in interestrates are also expected to take a toll.
These gures exclude the many housescurrently being built and planned forconstruction in new estates, such as the
major development near the AttamurraRoad golf course.
Real estate agents and builders believe animmediate appetite for people to build newhomes is one of the factors which has led tothe surplus.
There is a pattern of people wanting tomove out of older homes and wanting to moveinto new ones, so if there is a surplus it isin the older homes, real estate agent VickiQuinn said.
It makes it an incredibly competitive andchallenging market to sell in.
Mount Gambier mayor Steve Perrymansaid this was indicative of the citys changinghomebuyer demographic.
Over the last 10 years the governmenthas made it easier for rst home owners toget credit for building, so part of the swaywould be controlled by a sway in young peopleleaving home, he said.Continued page 6
