T H E P R E S I D E N T ' S C O R N E R
The 1969 AAPG C o n v e n t i o n in Dallas i s now a matter of record. Attendance this year was the largest in several years. Whether this i s an indication of a renewed interest in the geology presented at the convention or the 1 o c a t i o n would be difficult to prove. There is one thing that cer - tainly goes without question. The Dallas G e o 1 o g i c a 1 Society members performed perfectly. The o r g a n i z a t i on evident will give the Houston Geological Society members a difficult goal to exceed in 1971.
The tremendous job of "putting on a convention" cannot be appreciated without some personal knowledge of the amount of detail planning entailed in every phase of the convention. On several occasions I came in contact with the Dallas members at work at their chosen jobs for the AAPG con- ,vention. I have never seen a more dedicated group. Enoughpraiseworthy words do not exist to express my congratulations and appreciation for a !!job well done. 'I
The a t t e n d a n c e at all functions was to the point of capacity. The "Ice Breaker I t welcoming party was a roaring success. I do not believe that any convention would seem complete without this opening affair. The technical sessions were extremely valuable in the amount of ngeological information" passed out. The Exhibit Hall was filled with "idea genera- ting" displays. The only e x p r e e s l o n of concern heard was that it was impossible to attend all of the presentations.
Edd Turner, Getty Oil, i s the general chairman of the 1971 AAPG Convention to be held in Houston. Most of the key positions of responsibility have been filled. Many i m p o r t a n t jobs have yet to be filled. Any HGS member that would care to be a part of a successful Houston Geological Society sponsored AAPG Convention should get in touch with Edd Turner. A tremendous amount of work will have to be done by the members of the HGS in order to host anAAPG Convention exceeding the success of the one just past in Dallas. It will be difficult to equal their achievement.

University of Houston
Tom began his university study in 1956,He was a full-time student during his fresh-man year, after that he worked and went toschool at night. He r e c e i v e d his B. S. in1964 and expects to receive his M.S. inAugust of this year. While attending schoolhe was employed by Shell Development Co.from 1961 to 1967, first as assistant to Dr.Al T r a v e r s e and then u nd e r Dr. B. F.Perkins. Since 1967, Tom has been a petro-logist and x-ray diffraction mineralogist atGulf Research and Development
For his mas t e r 's thesis Tom has bee n studying a microsyeniteintrusion in Brewster County, Texas under the direction of Dr. MaxCarmen. He is attempting to delineate, by means of x-ray diffraction andoptical mineralogy, the chemical and structural variations of the alkalifeldspars within the intrusion.
Tom is married to the former Patricia Lee Jones and they have threedaughters -- Mary Kay, age 9; Julie Annette, age 6; and Sally Roxanne, age 3.
STEPHEN E. DELONGUniversity of Texas at Austin
A native of Indiana, Stephen was born inEvansville on September 22, 1943. He re-ceived his A. B. in G e 0 log y from OberlinCollege in 1965 before enrolling in the graduate school at The University of Texas atAustin. At Texas Stephen held an N. S. F.Traineeship for two years and then wasa war d e d a two year N. S. F. Fellowship inthe nationwide competition.
Stephen received his M. A. in January ofthis year. His thesis topic was a "Lead
Isotope Model with Geologic Constraints." Cur r e n t 1 Y for his doctoraldissertation he is studying the distribution of alkalies, alkaline earths,
4
and strontium isotopes in igneous rocks of the Western Aleutian Islands
under the supervision of Dr. Leon E. Long. Stephen's general geologicinterests are the chemical and physical properties and evolution of themantle-crust system with the specific research topics of the distribution
of radiogenic daughter isotopes (Sr, Pb) of the long-lived heat-producingelements (Rb, U, Th) in volcanic rocks, particularly oceanic and in allaspects of igneous petrology.
Science published a paper ("Isotopic Co mp 0 sit ion of Strontium inVolcanic Rocks from Oahu") which he co-authored with J. L. Powell ofOb e r lin College in 1966. As e c ond paper has been submitted to Geo-chimica et Cosmochimica Acta. Stephen co-authored with L. P. Cook,H. A. Illich, and M. A. Jordan a paper ("Granitic Rocks of the CassadayQuarry, Llano Uplift, Texas ") which was presented at the 1968 meeting ofthe South Central Section of the Geological Society of America.
DONALD D. REITZLamar State College of Technology
Donald was born in Dodge City, Kansasin 1945. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson
High School in Port Arthur, Texas, in 1963.Since then, he has attended Lamar Tech on
several occasions and has worked for Texaco,
Inc. at the Port Arthur plant. A year ago-hereceived a leave of absence from Texaco to
complete his Bachelor's degree in Geologyand to go on to graduate school. He has beenaccepted by the Graduate School of Louisiana
State University and has received a student
assistantship there to begin in Sept., 1969.
Dr. H. E. Eveland, Head of the Department, says that Donald "hasbeen one of our most effective Laboratory Teaching Assistants. II He is a
leader in the Lamar Tech Geological Society. Last year he representedthe Society at the School Leadership Conference. This year he serves asits vice president.

SALT TECTONICS AND PLEISTOCENE STRATIGRAPHY ON THE CONTINENTAL SLOPE OF
THE NORTHERN GULF O F MEXICO
By P e t e r Lehner
A B S T R A C T
During a s p a r k e r and core d r i l l p r o g r a m conducted by Shell, sa l t
was cored on ten prominent s t ruc tures on the continental slope. Combined
with se i smic data, r esu l t s of this study confi rm previous views that the
Gulf Coast sa l t basin extends into the Sigsbee deep. Broad sa l t swells and
pillows a r e typical s t ruc tu res of the continental slope. The Sigsbee s c a r p
appears to be the surface expression of a sa l t wall. A zone of active
down-to-the-ocean faults follows the Texas shelf edge. They appear to be
re la ted to the flow of sa l t a t depth away f r o m the advancing clas t ic wedge.
Upper Cretaceous through Holocene deep-water sediments were
cored on the continental slope. E a s t of Brownsville the sa l t i s over la in by
red beds of unknown age. Core holes a t the shelf edge encountered deltaic
and shorel ine deposits of the Pleis tocene low-sea- level s tages . Sub-
mar ine s l ides and turbidity c u r r e n t s c a r r i e d sediments down the slope and
filled deep synclinal basins between the sa l t uplifts.
BAY MARCHAND - TIMBALIER BAY - CAILLOU ISLAND SALT COMPLEX
By Gordon F r e y
A B S T R A C T
This sa l t complex, m o r e than 28 mi les long and up t o 12 mi les wide,
m a y be p a r t of a much longer sa l t feature that extends both toward the e a s t
and west. The mother sa l t bed, of probable Late T r i a s s i c - E a r l y J u r a s s i c
age, i s present ly buried to depths of 40, 000 t o 50,000 feet, whereas the
tops of the individual domes along the t r e n d r i s e to within 2 , 000 t o 3,000
feet of the surface.
Production t o date on this three-f ie ld complex has been in excess of
0 .7 billion b a r r e l s of oil. Oil r e s e r v e s a r e es t imated t o range f r o m
another 0 75 billion to 1 billion b a r r e l s . In addition, significant gas
r e s e r v e s a r e p resen t .
Hydrocarbon accumulation occurs in sands of Pleis tocene through
La te Miocene age and ranges in depth f r o m 1,000 feet t o below 20,000
feet. A wide variety of t r a p s i s found, including supradomal arching,
shale and sa l t t runcat ions , s t ra t igraphic t r a p s , and those resulting f r o m
faults .
Product ion was es tabl ished on this complex i n 1933. The tota l
hydrocarbon production f o r 1967 was approximately 97 million b a r r e l s .
