Pre -Baptismal Registration Must register in the parish office, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am –3:30 pm a week prior to the class. Bring child’s birth certificate; required to register Sponsors if married must be married by the Catholic Church and marriage certificate required. If single they must be at least 16, and bring copy of their Bap-tism, First Communion and Confirmation Parents and godparents must attend two pre-baptismal classes held 1st Tuesday & Thursday of the month at 7:00 - 9:30 pm. The candidate should register for her/his Quince Años ceremony on or before her/his 14th birthday . The candidate must have been baptized in the Roman Catholic Church and must have received First Eucharist prior to the time of the ceremony. If the honoree has not received the Sacrament of Communion, she/he should be enrolled to prepare to receive the sacrament before the Quince Años ceremony. Dear Friends in St. Dominic. Congratulations & thank you everyone for your participation to our 2016 DSF campaign. We have achieved in payment our 2016 Diocesan Services Fund Goal of $ 34,000. Total amount pledged towards our 2016 DSF goal was $39,156.24. Total amount paid was $ 36,281.24. Thank you and God bless you all a hundred-fold! Next week-end, we shall launch our 2017 Diocesan Services Fund campaign (DSF) 2017 with the theme: Go, Make Disciples! Our DSF commitment Sunday will be on the week-end of February 4th / 5th . Everyone’s participation is crucial at this time. Please do so at any level you can make it! Next week-end, ( January 28th & 29th )we shall take up a second collection for the Bishops’ Fund for Latin America.. Your donations and renewed support will fund catechesis, pastoral programs, marriage and family life programs, and seminarian formation for those who, without your help, would not have access to these resources. Please prayerfully consider supporting this collection as a way to share your faith with our brothers and sisters in Latin America and the Caribbean. This week-end’s scriptures tell us about the arrest of St John the Baptist, which was a moment of transition for Jesus. Before that point, Jesus had begun gathering his Apostles and preaching, but only on a part-time basis. As long as John continued preaching and baptizing, Jesus stayed in the wings. But when John was arrested, that was the sign. The last prophet had been silenced, and the moment had come for Jesus, the Messiah whom all the prophets had announced, to take center stage. St Matthew tells us that when that moment came, Jesus moved to Capernaum, a more cosmopolitan city than his small hometown of Nazareth. And then he called his first Apostles. Peter, Andrew, James, and John had all met Jesus before, when they were still disciples of John the Baptist. They had spent time with Jesus. They had seen him perform the miracle at Cana, turning water into wine at the wedding feast. They had started to get to know him - the Gospel of John tells us that they had even come to believe that he was the Messiah. But that is not enough for Jesus. Jesus has more to show them, and more for them to do. So at this crucial moment, when he is ready to begin his full-time ministry, Jesus goes out to these fishermen as they ply their trade on the Sea of Galilee, calls them by name, and invites them to help build his Kingdom. Jesus did not start his mission alone, and he does not continue it alone. He established his Church and began his work of salvation with the help of these chosen apostles, and today he continues his work in the same way, calling normal fishermen, folks like you and me, to become his apostles. Las escrituras de este fin de semana nos hablan del arresto de San Juan Bautista, que fue un momento de transición para Jesús. Antes de ese punto, Jesús había comenzado a reunir a sus Apóstoles y predicar, pero sólo a tiempo parcial. Mientras Juan continuaba predicando y bautizando, Jesús permanecía en las alas. Pero cuando John fue arrestado, esa fue la señal. El último profeta había sido silenciado, y el momento había llegado para Jesús, el Mesías que todos los profetas habían anunciado, para tomar el centro del escenario. San Mateo nos dice que cuando llegó ese momento, Jesús se trasladó a Capernaum, una ciudad más cosmopolita que su pequeña ciudad natal de Nazaret. Y luego llamó a sus primeros apóstoles. Pedro, Andrés, Santiago y Juan habían conocido a Jesús antes, cuando todavía eran discípulos de Juan el Bautista. Habían pasado tiempo con Jesús. Le habían visto realizar el milagro en Caná, convirtiendo el agua en vino en la fiesta de bodas. Habían empezado a conocerlo - el Evangelio de Juan nos dice que incluso llegaron a creer que él era el Mesías. Pero eso no es suficiente para Jesús. Jesús tiene más que mostrarles, y más que hacer. DIOCESAN SERVICES FUND 2017 The theme for our 2017 Diocesan Services Funds (DSF) is: Go Make Disciples! This is part of the Great Commission, given by Jesus Christ to his disciples at the end of the Gospel of Matthew. This charge to Go Make Disciples is equally relevant for all of us today. As disciples of Christ, we are to be conduits for God’s loving mercy to others. The DSF is a vital means of responding to Christ’s invitation. It provides critical support and sustenance for over 60 Programs, which benefit many in this local Church.

Your donation to DSF will support these Teaching, Evangelizing and Worship ministries: Apostleship of the sea, Catholic schools office, Chapels (Holy Cross and Warren), Communications office, Ecumenism Commission, Office of Evangelization and Catechesis, Office of Worship, Pastoral and Educational Ministry and all other ministries and apostolates in the Archdiocese. Making disciples for Christ entails inviting others to the community of God’s people. Through the Office of Vocations, another important beneficiary of DSF, we are able to accompany those seeking to follow Christ more closely as a priest or as a religious, and then go out to make disciples of others.

GOD’S CALL TO BUILD: OUR BRIDGE TO THE FUTURE

Clarification on the Matching Grant……On a letter dated July 26, 2017 from the Chancery Office, the Archdiocese is concerned about our large debt and the financial challenges that WE- as a community face. In this regard, after consultation with the Finance Secretariat, Bishop George Sheltz signed the document approving a matching ATTP grant towards the parish’s outstanding loan. The Archdiocese will match $1.00 for every $ 1.00 in principal St. Dominic pays towards its DS & L loan to the Archdiocese for 2 years up to $ 200,00. It is very important for our community to continue to pay down as much principal as possible, in order to reduce the interest expense of the parish, as well as to pay back borrowed funds to the DS & L programs, which were made possible by the savings of the many parishes and schools of our Archdiocese. It is in this regard that all funds – donations/contributions & 2

nd collections are needed. Please continue to send

in your donations and monthly contributions so that we can pay as much extra principal as possible in order to take advantage of the extent of this grant until July 2019.

DIOS NOS HA LLAMADO A CONSTRUIR: NUESTRO PUENTE HACIA EL FUTURO

Aclaración sobre la Subvención Compartida ...... En una carta fechada el 26 de julio de 2017 de la Oficina de la Cancillería, la Arquidiócesis está preocupada por nuestra gran deuda y los desafíos financieros que enfrenta Nosotros- como comunidad. En este sentido, después de consultar con la Secretaría de Finanzas, el obispo George Sheltz firmó el documento que aprobaba una subvención ATTP equivalente para el préstamo pendiente de la parroquia. La Arquidiócesis igualará $ 1.00 por cada $ 1.00 en el principal que St. Dominic paga hacia su préstamo de DS & L a la Arquidiócesis por 2 años hasta $ 200.00. Es muy importante que nuestra comunidad continúe pagando tanto capital como sea posible para reducir los gastos de interés de la parroquia, así como para pagar los fondos prestados a los programas de DS & L, que fueron posibles gracias a la Ahorros de las muchas parroquias y escuelas de nuestra Arquidiócesis. Es en este sentido que todos los fondos - donaciones / contribuciones y 2 ª colecciones son necesarios. Por favor continúe enviando sus donaciones y contribuciones mensuales para que podamos pagar lo mayor capital posible para poder aprovechar el alcance de esta beca hasta julio de 2019.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It's still months away, but parish ministers, especially if they are involved in the catechumenate, have their eyes on Lent and the Easter Triduum. Until fairly recent times, the last few days before Easter were shaped by an awareness of the Passion, but the

faithful were left to their own devices about how to engage with these mysteries. A thousand years ago, the Easter Vigil as a solemn and central moment of initiation had vanished. By the early 1950s it was a minor moment in parish life, celebrated on Holy Saturday morning, usually with only the priests and a handful of invited guests. Most people understood it as necessary only for blessing the paschal candle and preparing the Easter water. People who were children during World War II sometimes remember that the weekly noontime test of the air-raid sirens on Holy Saturday signaled the end of Lent. Today, of course, we see Holy Saturday as entirely within the paschal fast, and hardly the time for children to be tearing through the plastic grass looking for jelly beans and chocolate eggs. These memories point to a total collapse of the once-central liturgies of the Christian year. This impoverishment of the liturgy was mostly an accident of history. The root cause was the loss of Lent as a time focused on the final formation of catechumens for the Easter sacraments. By 1880, scholars began to piece together a vision of what once had been, and slowly, at first in a handful of monasteries in Europe, pieces of the tradition were rediscovered and celebrated.

LIBERATION AND REFORM

While you might have to reach for an atlas to determine that Isaiah is speaking about Galilee, today's first reading (part of which was read at Christmas) is prophetic of Jesus' future ministry in that province. The light that brings salvation and rejoicing is, ultimately, Christ. Liberation is the theme: liberation from both ignorance ("darkness") and sin (the "yoke"). As Isaiah identifies a place, so Paul describes an attitude: the attitude that develops, even among good people, of equating their own will with the common good. This always brings dissension, and so it has done in Corinth. Paul will not allow this; we are all members of "Christ's party." The gospel is not to divide us.

Matthew quotes from Isaiah in today's Gospel, presenting Jesus as the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecies. The theme is "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). To spread this message, Jesus begins to select disciples, four of whom we meet today: Peter, Andrew, James, and John.

LIBERACIÓN Y REFORMA

Aunque quizá tengas que usar un atlas para determinar que Isaías está hablando de Galilea, la primera lectura de hoy (parte de la cual se leyó en Navidad) profetiza el futuro ministerio de Jesús en esa provincia. La luz que trae la salvación y regocijo es, fundamentalmente, Cristo. El tema es la liberación: liberación de la ignorancia ("tinieblas") y también del pecado (el "yugo"). Mientras Isaías identifica un lugar, así Pablo describe una actitud: la actitud que crece, incluso entre gente buena, de equiparar su propia voluntad con el bien común. Esto siempre origina desacuerdo, y así ha ocurrido en Corinto. Pablo no permitirá esto; todos somos miembros del "partido de Cristo". El Evangelio no es para dividirnos.

Mateo cita a Isaías en el Evangelio de hoy, y presenta a Jesús como el cumplimiento de las profecías de Isaías. El tema es "Conviértanse, porque ya está cerca el Reino de los Cielos" (Mateo 4:17). Para difundir este mensaje, Jesús comienza a elegir discípulos, y hoy conocemos a cuatro de ellos: Pedro, Andrés, Santiago y Juan..

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Los retablos de metal son famosos en muchas partes de Latinoamérica. Estos pequeños retablos o laminitas contienen imágenes de Cristo, la Santísima Trinidad, María, los ángeles u otro santo/a pintados sobre lámina, madera u otro material para decorar los altares familiares de los hogares hispanos. Aunque los retablos no siempre siguen las normas del arte cristiano, los retablos latinoa-mericanos son bellos ejemplos de la mezcla de culturas amerindias, europeas y africanas. Pero no todos los retablos son pequeños. En muchas iglesias coloniales de Latinoamérica se encuentran retablos gigantescos hechos de mármol o madera, cubiertos de oro y joyas que recuerdan los grandes retablos europeos, pero con el color y folclor latinoamericano. Originalmente, los retablos europeos eran pequeños y móviles, de tal manera que se podían colocar sobre un altar para la celebración de la Misa. Cuando la Iglesia fue construyendo sus propios templos, los retablos empezaron a formar parte de la decoración de los santuarios y tomaron dimensiones impresionantes. Los retablos pequeños pasaron a los hogares de los fieles, quienes quieren tener a Cristo y sus santos como parte de su diario vivir.
