A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTVacations are over and the children are back in school. Now it is time to get ready for the High Holy Days. Clergy and Staff are very busy preparing and, believe me, this year it is extra difficult. Due to construction, staff is confined to a very small area and they are doing a commendable job. Clergy is sitting wherever they can find room. It will all be worth it when the job is finished and, hopefully, that won’t be too much longer.

Selichot is September 24 and that starts off our High Holy Days. Dinner is served first at 6:15pm and if you wish to attend dinner, you need to notify the Sisterhood. However, it is not necessary to attend the dinner to come to the wonderful program at 7:00pm, followed by our meaningful Selichot Service at 8:00pm.

If you are a member in good standing (you’re current on your financial

obligations to Temple Beth Am), and have returned your Voluntary Financial Commitment membership renewal card, your High Holy Days tickets will be mailed to you in mid September. A copy of the Voluntary Financial Commitment card can be found on the back page of this Scribe. If you wish to buy extra tickets or do not receive your tickets, please notify the office. Along with your tickets will be your High Holy Days Pledge card. Please give what you gave last year or, if possible, more. This money is needed to provide for all the activities and programming that goes on throughout the year.

The past couple of years, congregants have made very meaningful speeches on Yom Kippur. This year, unfortunately, you have to listen to me.

The One School kicked off their season with their Back-to-School Ice Cream Social which was very well attended.

by Carol Carswell

August 21 was the Temple Open House from 10:00am to 1:00pm. As usual, it was a great affair with something for everyone including games, social action projects, a sundae bar and food by Chef Eric.

Questions about chidush should be directed to Mark Slifkin. Call me at 561-236-3022 if you have questions or wish to chat. My email is [email protected].

How are these High Holy Days Different from other High Holy Days?

Many people who have recently visited TBA have asked me if we are really still planning to have the High Holy Days Services in the sanctuary? The answer is Yes (thank you Mark Slifkin). Even though the entire Chidush project will be completed in time for the dedication on February 25, the sanctuary, along with the extraordinary audiovisual system, will be ready for the High Holy Days.

The physical appearance is not the only thing that will be different this year. Jessica, Brett and I spent the last year planning. We read a lot, attended conferences and seminars, met with colleagues and musicians and spent countless hours amongst ourselves reflecting and brainstorming. It is not that we thought that our Services were not good, it is just that we took the message of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov to heart: “If you are not a better tomorrow than you are today, what need have you for a tomorrow?”

To lead us in the right direction we started by focusing on you, the thousand people who join us for Services. We honestly feel honored that you chose Temple Beth Am and therefore you deserve the most spiritual, intellectual and joyous experience. The challenge is that you are a diverse group. Some of you come only during the High Holy Days and some almost never miss a Shabbat Service; some grew up in a traditional family and some have little Jewish knowledge; some chose Judaism later in life and some never did, yet lovingly support their Jewish spouses and children. Despite that, we still believe that there is a Service that can be meaningful for all of you. I’ll give you two examples:

Kavanot (Context and Intention)

As I’m writing theses lines we are all devastated by the death and damage in flood-ravaged Louisiana and earthquake-stricken Italy. Are these catastrophes the doing of a punishing

God as may be implied by the famous words of the prayer “who by fire, who by water, who by earthquake”? I definitely don’t believe so. But without the right context, the ancient prayers have a potential to lose their beautiful and transformative quality, and to sound dull and unrelatable to people in the 21st century. What we will do is not omit the difficult traditional prayers but add a kavanah, an intention and explanation, that will make the prayers once again move our hearts as well as our minds.

Aliyot (Honors)

Like many synagogues we took advantage of the High Holy Days to thank and acknowledge our members for their charity and volunteer work at the Temple and outside. While expressing gratitude is an essential Jewish virtue we strongly believe in, we had to admit that using the High Holy Days Services for that purpose has some drawbacks. Since we are blessed with many people who are generous with their resources, time and skills, we kept adding aliyot until we realized that at times they interrupt the natural flow of the Service and was making our Services longer.

We also heard comments (completely unjustifiable) that it looks like those who are part of the “inner circle” get all the honors, and those who aren’t seen as worthy weren’t getting any honors. And as you know, perception is at time more important than reality.

But even more important, we believe that the honor of an Aliyah should be used as a way to draw people into Judaism and the life of the congregation, not as a reward to those who have already become immersed in it. It gives us the opportunity to offer Aliyot and to give a special blessing to those who for example, survived an accident or a surgery and to those who were blessed with a new child or grandchild.

I am looking forward to seeing you all during the High Holy Days and hopefully before.

Shannah Tovah, Rabbi Alon Levkovitz

congregation, not as a reward to those who have already become immersed in it...

SISTERHOOD SCOOP by Lois RemickOk, I admit it, during the conventions, I felt the “Bern”! HOWEVER, even Bernie never mentioned what I wanted changed! Simply put, I want all the public schools in the United States to have the SAME start date and end date for the school year. I am tired of keeping 3 separate calendars for the school districts of Florida, Virginia and Massachusetts, (my aging brain needs consistency). So, here’s my plan: please write to Representative Murphy and ask him to introduce a bill to HELP Seniors and Save Trees… one school calendar is more than enough!

All TBA members and their guests are invited to a delicious Selichot Dinner, created and catered by Chef Eric Weiner, presented by Sisterhood, on Saturday evening, September 24 at 6:15pm. Dinner will be followed by a very special, new program at 7:00pm and Selichot Service at 8:00pm, designed and led by Rabbi Alon, Cantor Jessica, and Rabbinic Intern Brett. The cost is $20 per person for dinner; there is no charge to attend the program and Service. Dinner reservations must be

attended the July sessions to participate, and you may sign up for any one or more of the sessions. Look for our flyer in the October Scribe, for specific dates, cost, and the RSVP form.

We will be holding our Open Board Meetings at the Temple as soon as Chidush construction allows. Our meetings will be on the first Tuesday of the month, at 1:00pm. We are always looking for new voices and ideas and volunteers! Please plan on becoming active.

A big thank you to Trudy Boltuch, who has become Sisterhood’s Membership Outreach chair. Trudy will be telephoning the members who indicated they prefer phone calls to email notices and reminders. And, thank you to Trudy, Deb Schmidt, and Maril Levy for their help at the Sisterhood table at TBA’s Open House on August 21.

Stay tuned for Sisterhood program notices in the TBA Wednesday e-News and in our Scribe messages. Be on the lookout for Women’s Game Day & Lunch, JCC Celebrating Sisterhood Brunch at TBA, Line Dancing with the Silver Spurs, DJ and Dancing, a Women’s Seder for All Generations, a Zumba Class and more... We’ve got a great calendar of events and programs scheduled for you! Don’t forget to send your Sisterhood 2016-2017 membership form and dues to Maril Levy, if you haven’t yet done so.

Shalom y’all, Lois Remick

made by Friday, September 16. If you have any questions, please email Lois at [email protected]. See the Selichot Dinner flyer in this Scribe for further information and reservations. Mail your reservation form and check to: Lois Remick, 5540 Tamberlane

Save the date to join Sisterhood for our special Sunday, October 9 at 1:00pm, program, An Introduction to Henna Art, with Diana Spring. Diana will teach us about the history and cultural significance of henna art, and she will draw a henna design on each attendee. The event is open to TBA women and their friends, but attendance is limited to 20, and priority will be given to Sisterhood members. Cost is $5.00 for Sisterhood members and $10.00 for guests. This program will be held offsite. See flyer in this issue on the opposite page.

Good news! We have a new date for the Lunch and a Movie featuring The Infidel: Sunday, October 30 from 1:00pm to 3:30pm. Lunch by Chef Eric, $10 for TBA Sisterhood Members; $12 for non-members. Open to all TBA adults and guests.

The sisters who attended the special Arise Foundation sessions on

Constructive Aging asked that we extend the program. Beginning in November, we will resume our guided discussions, once a month, on a Monday, from 1:30pm – 3:00pm. This program is open to all TBA women, but limited to 15 participants. You need not have

MEN’S CLUB SCRIBBLESby Bruce Cohen, Men’s Club President

Labor Day CelebrationFriday, September 2ndJoin us at 6pm for a short Shabbat Service followed by a Congregational Dinner catered by our in-house Chef Eric Weiner.

Come celebrate Labor Day with us!

MEN’S CLUB UPDATE:PROGRAMS FOR EVERYONE

I want to say thank you to all the Men’s Club members who have helped with our August programs, including the Temple’s annual Open House on Sunday, August 21st. Men’s Club helped out in the kitchen with Chef Eric on Saturday and Sunday to prepare the delicious quiche, pizza and drinks. Our members also helped serve the food and the ever important clean up. I want to thank everyone who came out to the Open House and enjoyed the day and to thank all the Men’s Club volunteers. Without their help these and many other programs wouldn’t be possible.

Our August Monthly Dining Out Dinner at Casa Mia Trattoria on Indiantown Road was a lovely event attended by many TBA members. Mel Wolfe did a wonderful job organizing this dinner and took care of everything involved to make it a success. Way to go Mel!!!

Coming up in September we have two events on September 11th. First at 9:00am we have a Men’s

Club Breakfast with The League of Women Voters presenting a “Conversation on the Florida Constitutional Amendments.” This talk is a non-partisan look at the Amendments coming up for vote on the November 8th ballot. This breakfast and talk is open to the public so please invite your friends (they don’t have to be Temple members). Breakfast is at 9:00am with a nominal charge (see flyer in this Scribe on page 17). If you would like to come to the Talk on the Amendments please come at 9:30am (no charge). I can tell you having attended previous presentations from this group you really don’t want to miss this opportunity to examine and understand exactly what the issues are that we’re voting on.

At 11:00am is our luxury bus ride to see the Miami Marlins vs. the LA Dodgers. Tickets to the game are in sections 6, 7 or 8 behind the first base dugout, so from my experience going to Marlin’s games, they are wonderful seats. We will be providing a box lunch for the trip down and refreshments as well. The cost for this great day is $50.00 so

please call Bob Hochman at 561-775-0801 or 917-807-8086 for this wonderful day at the ball park.

We are sorry to have to postpone the Shofar Making program we had arranged for this month due to a scheduling conflict with the organization we were bringing in to teach us. We will reschedule for 2017 and give you plenty of notice.

Right after the High Holy Days we again will be helping to build the Sukkah on Sunday, October 16 starting at 8:00am. Please look for more information in the Temple’s Wednesday e-News or next month’s Scribe.

Lastly, men of Temple Beth Am, our next Men’s Club Meeting will be held Wednesday, September 14th at 6:30pm at the Temple. Please join us for an hour or so to go over upcoming Men’s Club activities and events. Your input is always appreciated.

A synopsis of our September book:

The Last Woman Standingby Thelma Adams

Josephine Marcus is a rebellious young woman who doesn’t want to settle down with a nice Jewish boy and is lured to Tombstone, Arizona by the promises of Johnny Behan, a local sheriff. She arrives in Arizona naive and full of hopes. At first she trusts in Johnny, but then as she begins to see through him she manages to build her own life and friendships without him and finds a place in Tombstone by her own right. Finding Wyatt was the icing on the cake.

MAZEL TOV!We are proud to announce that our daughter, Sydney Alexa Fox, will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, September 10, 2016.

Sydney is an 8th grader at the Benjamin School where she is a Headmaster

Honor Roll student. Sydney plays volleyball, tennis, loves gymnastics and is on the middle school dance team. When not busy with school and sports, she loves to hang out with her friends either at the mall, tubing in the water or flipping on her trampoline. Sydney spends her summers in Wolfeboro, NH at Pierce Camp Birchmont where she just enjoyed her 4th consecutive summer.

For her mitzvah project, Sydney has chosen to support a charity called Cadje Ministries that sends clothing, linens and other items to support impoverished families in Haiti. Sydney had the opportunity to meet a woman from Haiti who explained the difficult conditions many people in her county have faced for a long time that have grown even worse since the recent earthquake. This organization coordinates getting these items directly to Haitian families in need. Sydney is excited to share her special Bat Mitzvah day with her brother Sam and all of her family and friends. She has worked very hard in preparation for her Bat Mitzvah and we could not be more proud of her accomplishments and watching her become a beautiful young woman. We would like to thank Rabbi Alon, Rabbinic Intern Brett and all of Sydney’s teachers at Temple Beth Am for all their help in preparing Sydney for this very special day. Shari and Lee Fox

With tremendous joy and pride, we announce that our son, Alexander Daniel Wagner, will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on September 3, 2016.

Alex is a seventh-grade student at Watson B.

Duncan Middle School in Palm Beach Gardens, where he is involved in school and athletic activities. Alex enjoys robotics, computer coding and chess, and also ran on the school’s track and field team last spring.

We would like to thank the congregation for warmly welcoming us to the Temple Beth Am community two years ago. We also would like to thank Rabbinic Intern Brett, Rabbi Alon, Cantor Jessica, Alissa Frankel and all of Alex’s Temple Beth Am teachers who have been instrumental in helping him prepare for his special day.

Along with Alex’s sister, Maddie, and brother, Harrison, we look forward to celebrating with Alex, and want to congratulate him on reaching this milestone.

Kevin and Jodie Wagner

With much love and joy, we are proud to announce that our loving daughter, Lily Dee Stewart, will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on September 24, 2016. Lily is a compassionate, kind, dedicated straight “A” student who is in 7th grade at Providence Education.

Lily has an incredibly unique ability to shine pure light and love on everyone and everything she touches. Expressing empathy and sensitivity is the essence of Lily - unconditionally always giving of herself to others in need, by words and deeds.

Lily loves learning; she’s particularly fond of history, reading, writing, science, music, and the arts. With a strong work ethic, Lily has learned to play flute and trains several times a week at Taekwondo. Currently a red belt, she already helps teach younger students where she trains. She’s passionate about the environment and exploring nature: plant and animal life on land, air, and sea. Growing up at Temple Beth Am, attending preschool and religious school, Judaism has always been an important part of Lily’s life and she has continued that commitment and experience participating in Youth Group and the JCC’s Camp Shalom. As important to Lily and more important to us than all of her accomplishments, is that Lily has developed a profound sense of family. She believes and shows family matters most! Daily, she performs selfless acts of loving kindness as the older sibling for her younger brother Leo, with whom she shares a special closeness.

We would like to express a special thanks to Rabbinic Intern Brett, as well as Cantor Jessica, Rabbi Alon, and all of her teachers for helping Lily learn about our heritage, Hebrew language, and to prepare for her becoming a Bat Mitzvah.

Lily, we are deeply proud of who you are today, the beautiful young woman you are becoming, and we look forward to continue watching you grow.

With gratitude and love, Sheryl and Rick

THE ONE SCHOOL NEWSSEPTEMBER 2016by Paula Deakter

Early Childhood Director

Gratitude is for the Very Young...Being appreciative is a value most parents want their children to develop as they grow. But during, say, a visit to the toy store, when your child is begging for the latest andgreatest thing, you may wonder how long it will actually take for that gratitude to show itself. We want our children to be happy, yet we shower them with gifts, protect them from the natural consequences of their actions and do all kinds of things that actually make them less happy. How can weinstill gratitude in children who are naturally self-centered and growing up in an entitlement-driven society?

Ways to Teach GratitudeModel Gratitude. Gratitude isn’t just a lesson to be taught to children, but also an ongoing exercise in learning for parents. Children need models for positive behavior. They express some sense of thankfulness and desire to be appreciated all the time. It is our role as parents to model appreciation and reflect those genuine feelings back to the child. If we thank our children for various acts of kindness, they will start understanding the true meaning of thankfulness. An example is saying, “Thank you for your hug; it made me feel so happy!”

As parents, part of our job is to count (or tell) our blessings as it relates to our lives in the here and now, but also we must feelgratitude for those who came before us. We can tell our children about our ancestors, on whose shoulders we stand. We are blessedby their having lived and grateful to them for doing what they did to help us reach this day. Let’s tell family stories to our children so that all of us together can count our blessings and be thankful.

Add prayers of gratitude to our lives. Since food is symbolic of health and wellness, meals are also a time to encourage your child to give thanks. Whether you want your child to thank God by saying grace, or simply say “thank you,” appreciation matters.

As we prepare to celebrate the High Holy Days, there is a great reason to be thankful. In the Shehecheyanu blessing, we thank God for helping us to reach this wonderful time of the year.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned as adults, it’s that “thank you” comes in many forms. What matters most is saying it, with feeling,as we recognize just how truly blessed we are. Instilling that same sense of gratitude is one of parenting’s most important challenges, as our children become healthy, happy, and responsible adults.

Shanah Tovah U’metukah—A good and sweet year to all of you.

HAMAKOM by Alissa Frankel, Director of Education

I am excited to announce this wonderful opportunity that HaMakom at Temple Beth Am will take part in beginning this year. We are one of 16 Reform congregations in North America selected to participate in the newly formed Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) Community of Practice dedicated to Reimagining Congregational Education.

This URJ Community of Practice is a congregational networking group for Reform congregations that are seeking to discover new ways to innovate and experiment in congregational education.

By participating in this initiative, we will have the opportunity to meet with leaders from congregations with common interests to share ideas and experiment together with new strategies. Also, we will have access to the URJ’s professional staff and expert consultants, some of the most renowned thought leaders in their fields.

Over the past year, we have shifted our religious school and continue to transition to HaMakom’s vision for youth learning, geared towards innovation and engagement. Participating in this Community of Practice will enable us to fulfill these goals through collaboration and learning from best practices while sharing our successes with other innovative congregations.

We will work together with the other congregations in the Reimagining Congregational Education Community of Practice formally for the next 18 months to push the boundaries of existing congregational

efforts. We will receive guidance from peers and advisors to experiment in our own community, create congregational innovations, and garner skills that will benefit all areas of congregational life.

This Community of Practice is a joint effort between the Association of Reform Jewish Educators (ARJE) and the URJ. There will be monthly virtual gatherings and e-learning opportunities throughout. In addition, we will receive coaching, support, and consultation to support the planning and implementation of educational experiments. Results of these strategic experiments will be shared with congregations outside the Community of Practice and with the Reform Movement at large.

We are looking forward to getting started with our cohorts and as we progress, we’ll keep everyone updated on what we are learning!

YOUTH GROUP MITZVAHS! by Amanda FeldCamp Jenny, NFTY's Southern mitzvah corps project, gives children the opportunity to receive the love of big

"brothers and sisters," three nutritious meals a day, and encouragement for the future. They participate in outdoor activities while creating unforgettable experiences with their peers.

Temple Beth Am was delighted to hear that two of our high schoolers attended Camp Jenny this year as counselors… these are their stories:

Every memorial day weekend, over 150 elementary school children from FL Stanton Elementary in Atlanta, GA travel to URJ Camp Coleman for a 5-day summer camp experience. If these children attend school with a positive attitude and work hard to get good grades, they will have the opportunity to earn one of the 150 coveted spots at Camp Jenny. While it is an unforgettable experience for the campers, it truly changes the lives of the counselors as well.

This past May, I was humbled by the opportunity to be the Camp Jenny counselor for six 5th grade girls. My girls came from all walks of life and I really didn’t know any of the challenges they’ve had to endure. However, none of that matters at Camp Jenny. During these five magical days, the campers get to succeed at anything they put their mind to. Camp Jenny fosters a community of support unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

Even though I know these girls have been let down before, I am amazed at how much love and kindness they have in their hearts. On the first night, I had

already formed a special connection to each one of my campers. At the first friendship circle at Camp Jenny, I sat in the grass as one of my campers, Destiny, was cuddled in my lap and my other camper, Zaria, was braiding my hair. I don’t think they have any idea about how much they changed my life.

I keep a list of my campers in the back of my phone case, and everyday it reminds me to be the best version of myself. As one of my friends told me right before the campers arrived, “Everyone has a Camp Jenny sized hole in their heart. You just don’t realize it until it’s filled.” Hannah Rubin , NFTY-STR Communications Vice President

Over Memorial Day weekend of 2016, I had the privilege of working at Camp Jenny. All of the money to run this special camp experience is raised throughout the year so the kids won’t have to pay a single penny to attend; they just need to show that they are making a positive effort at school. The counselors and specialists of Camp Jenny are all high school aged; the majority of whom are a part of NFTY.

My job at Camp Jenny 2016 was as an arts & crafts specialist. I had a chance to work with each and every kid in the camp with their daily activities. Before the start of camp, I worked with the other arts & crafts specialist to design fun, interesting, and theme-related projects that the campers would be able to enjoy. When the campers arrived, I helped the kids with meaningful art projects and made sure everything was running smoothly.

I also had the opportunity of being attached to a cabin housing 3rd and 4th grade girls. Even though I was a specialist and did not have the chance to really spend all day with my campers, during meals, unit programming, and at celebrations, I was still able to form a special bond with a hilarious, intelligent, sweet, and eye-opening group of little girls. Being on staff at Camp Jenny truly allowed for me to meet some incredible people and have the opportunity to help make a positive impact on the FL Stanton community.
