How can IT help manage and reduce emissions?
IMO measures to reduce GHG-emissions
IMO Assembly Resolution A.963(23) set the starting point for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
from shipping.
The following instruments have been developed:
EEDI - Energy Efficiency Design Index
• as a future mandatory technical measure for new
ships (first interim Guidelines published in 2009 as
MEPC.1/Circ.681)
EEOI - Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator
• as a voluntary technical measure for ships in service
(first interim Guidelines published in 2005 as
MEPC/Circ.471, revised in 2009 as MEPC.1/Circ.684)
SEEMP - Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan
• as a mandatory operational measure for existing ships
(first interim Guidelines published in 2009 as MEPC.1/Circ.683 )
Market-based measures, e.g. an Emission Trading System, a GHG-Fund coupled with a bunker surcharge,
efficiency-based system, have been discussed but not yet agreed.
Slide 6GL Maritime Software | 10.10.2012 | Digital Ship
How can IT help manage and reduce emissions?
Non-mandatory market drivers seem to become stronger than regulations
Observations from the Market:
• Carriers are requesting an emission reporting for their individual transported cargo on ships
• Global players like DHL, ABX, Ikea, Automotive manufacturers are demanding emission data for their annually sustainability reports
• Industry associations have been formed to enable carriers emission reporting (CCWG)
• Ports are beginning to differentiate port fees according to ships environmental impact
⇒A first emission reporting is necessary / required
⇒Leading shipping companies need support to be ahead of regulations

As the saying goes...

How can IT help manage and reduce emissions?
You can’t manage what you don’t measure
 Easier said than done!
Slide 8GL Maritime Software | 10.10.2012 | Digital Ship
How can IT help manage and reduce emissions?
Actually there are “tons” of (valuable) voyage data reported already
There is a lot of voyage
reporting done today onboard:
• noon, arrival/departure, stop, ...• bunkering, fuel change over, ...
• same data, different formats,
redundant entry
Many of these data are highly
valuable if used systematically:
• fuel, lubes ...• speed, position ...
• voyage, vessel ...
A lot of new environmental
regulation will need these data:
• SOx, NOx regulation
• CO2 measures
• NGO reporting
Make better use of this reported data !
How? - Harmonized voyage reporting, structured data collection and analysis

Wouldn’t it be nice to have an integrated system capable of making use of all existing operational data?
GL EmissionManager
•Software solution
•Onboard recording of voyage, operational and
state data
• substituting already used daily noon, departure and
arrival reports ...
• one data entry for different purposes
•Onshore derivation and analysis of all
operational, bunkering and emissions
information
• performance monitoring for a vessel and the entire
fleet
• based on comprehensive data logging
•Emission data can be certified
Emissions:
• into air (NOx, SOx, CO2,...)
• into water (oil, ballast, bilge water ...)
• on shore (e.g. garbage, sludge, ...)

How does this all work in reality?
 Customer case study:
Slide 13
Improving the environmental performance of the fleet:
• Efficiency of ships: e.g. optimised hull, trim/draft software, propulsion
improvement devices
• Operation of ships: e.g. slow steaming, open sea ballast water exchange, bilge
water de-oilers with 5 ppm limit
• Information flow: environmental information system
In order to fulfill stakeholders’ demands, also in the future, such an information system is
key!
Their data requirements will become even more complex in the future (megatrend).
Already today the reporting needs cause tremendous workload onshore, but also at sea.
• However: No information system currently exists to systematically collect and
analyse all environmentally relevant information from ships
 Data not detailed enough
 Non-uniform reporting of data
Some environmental topics not reported ashore at all

How can IT help manage and reduce emissions?
You can’t
manage what
you can’t
measure!
Holds true for
environmental topics,
too.
Therefore IT can help to:
• Identify environmental hot spots or improvement areas
• Gather relevant information for the setting of environmental targets
• Analyse target achievement
• Sensitise staff on board and onshore
