Only to re-create it

Collaborative Intranets and Knowledge Portals
We have done lots of projects
So we know a thing or two about stakeholdersEngagement
but we like to think beyond today
and dwell on emergingpatterns
First
The intranet, as we know it, is dead
why?
information in silos
Informationcontrol
No participatorydecison process
Top-down Information flow
Companies typically install intranets top-down to distribute HR policies and other corporate information that workers are doing their best to ignore.
Cluetrain Manifesto
intranets are about process & information
and never about communication
guesswhat?
we are human beings
we need to
communicate, socialize, belong, share, create, talk, like, agree, disagree, invent, comment, ask, help,
…
that’s howwe get
creative
and creativity solves
problems
and creativity brings
innovation
intranets are sterile places
it was never a question of workflows or
technologies
but always a question of culture and
collaboration
Paranoia kills conersation. That's its point. But lack of open conersation kills companies.
Cluetrain Manifesto
we need to
shift from this
information
Into…
communication
But we need to go one step
Further
collaboration
that’s when we take advantage of our
collectiveintelligence
and we are not talking of ants
or bees…
we know that CI is complex
but’s lets skip the
academics
this is a good starting point:
collective intelligence is the capacity of human communities to evolve towards higher order complexity and harmony, through such innovation mechanisms as differentiation, integration, competition and collaboration.
George Pór
in business terms:
collective intelligence is the capacity to collaborate, compete, share knowledge and integrate different skills in order to achieve a common goal.
every manager’sHolly Grail
ok, but how do we harness this capacity?
remember
it’s not a question of workflows or
technologies
it’s a question of organizational culture
in order to thrive, ci needs an environment with:
openness
peering
sharing
Acting Globally
you may still control some critical data:
patents
financial information
personal data
strategic plans
etc.
but you have to loose control
to have collaboration
so The intranet
is dead
how can CI re-create it?
by modeling it to is users
people already use
social networks, wikis, groups, forums, social bookmarks, blogs, knowledge communities, expertise networks, …
in their personal life
let them use it for work!
technology is not an issue
open sourceclosed and licensed SAAs
it’s up to you
stimulate the mindset
change the environment
give them the tools
loose control
they’ll take care of the rest
Intranets naturally tend to route around boredom. The best are built bottom-up by engaged individuals cooperating to construct something far more valuable: an intranetworked corporate conersation.
Cluetrain Manifesto
They are your real value. Give them control
Thank you
