How Do I Reference a Book?
©2016 Susan Merrick
Go to your project dashboard...
And click on Sources
Now click on + ‘Create new citation’!
Then choose how you accessed your book! Mine is a print copy.
Next you will be asked to click on the type of source you want to cite. In this case, it is a book.
Now it is time to find the information you will need! All citations for books need a minimum of 5 pieces of information:
1. Author2. Title (and Subtitle, if there is one)3. Publisher4. Place of publication5. Date of publication
Where do I find this information? On the front cover?
NO! Why not?
All the information may not be present and sometimes it is incorrect!
Where then? Start with the title page of the book!
Title
Author
Publisher
But what about the place of publication?
Help! There are two places named:Boston and New York!
You can choose the first of the two or you can check on the back of the title
page to see if there is more information there!
On the back of the title page you will find...
The copyright dates...
The Publisher
The Place of Publication
Now that you have found all the necessary information...
You are ready to fill in the form and create
your citation!
This book is the print version...
And it has both an author and an illustrator...you can use the arrows to change the role of the person
Now for the rest of the information...
Title
Publisher
Date
Place of Publication
But what does it mean if there’s a red squiggly line under a title?
There’s a mistake in the
capitalisation of the title!
And this ‘exclamation mark’ in a yellow triangle will tell
you what it means! Just put your curser over it.
Suggestions
Check to be sure you aren’t capitalizing entire words (unless they are acronyms)
Happy with everything? Now click on ‘submit’!
And you’re done!
