Nutrition Basics

• Carbohydrates• Calories• Fiber• Protein• Fats• Cholesterol• Vitamins• Minerals

Carbohydrates

• Starches and sugars found in food• Examples:• Body’s preferred source of energy• Simple and complex

Calories

• Energy the body gets from foods• Body requires a minimum # set calories each day• Take in fewer calories than burned: lose weight• Take in more calories than burned: gain weight

Fiber

• Found in tough, stringy part of vegetables And fruits

• Special form of complex carb• Cannot be digested, used as energy• Waste removal

Proteins

• Build strong healthy bone, muscles, tissue, and teeth

• Makes new blood cells and protect important organs, such as the heart, brain, lungs, and skin

Fats

• Most concentrated form of energy• Beef, pork, egg yolks, dairy foods

higher in saturated fat than in fish or chicken

• Unsaturated fat is liquid fat, proven to reduce heart disease

Cholesterol

• Fat like substance produced in liver of all animals and found only in amimals

• Excessive can form plaque between artery walls

• Break off –clot• Lead to stroke and MI

Vitamin

• Compounds that help regulate digestion, and metabolism

• Needed in small amounts (micronutrients)

• No claories but some give you energy

Minerals

• Inorganic substances that the body cannot manufacture

• Act like workers to regulating many important body functions

• Calcium: strong bones and strong teeth
