How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Scarlet Wellings
Social Groups
In my magazine it represents white British women between the ages of 15-19. The
representation of them is a particularly real representation of women in today’s society.
How they are representedYoung women are represented negatively with the
story of ‘Heather’s Wild Nights Out’, they are represented negatively because it relates to
stereotypical young women not being able to handle their drink and being disorderly when intoxicated.
Furthermore…Young women could also be seen to be
represented as bitches in my magazine, when it comes to the double page spread. On the double
page spread the story is about how one friend, who has recently become famous, is accused by
an ex best friend of stealing her music and passing it off as her own. This is also creates the ideas of enemies as it is claimed in the story that
Megana, the new star already has one enemy.
IdeologyDominant Ideology – The idea that teenagers
are off the rails and are wild is represented through ‘Heather’s Wild Nights’. The dominant
ideology that girls like fashion is represented from the images included on the contents page
of two different pairs of shoes.
Continued..Emergent ideology, that girls are bitchy and are two-
faced, is represented in the story between Megana and Paris on the double page spread. This challenges
the dominant ideology of girls and young women because they are dominantly seen as individuals who
are sweet and innocent and not people to be two faced behind people’s backs.
Attracting the Social Groups
The colours I have chosen to use in my magazine are red, grey and white. I think that these colours will
attract girls and young women. The colours make it girly and the red as the background of the front cover makes it bright and stand out. The fact that there is a
girl on the front cover and the colour on the background is red means that a girl is more likely to pick up the
magazine rather than a boy.
INDIEMy magazine is an indie magazine and is therefore is
aimed at the Indie social groups. In my magazine Indie social groups are represented through the page that is
dedicated to festivals. I also think that the image of Paris used on the contents page, in front of the trees represents
Indie social groups because it is a different type of photo and not a photo found in many types of music magazines.
