How To TreaT and wHaT To doaT Home? • Usearecommendedheadliceproduct.Always
speaktoapharmacistabouttheproductthatisappropriateforyouandyourfamily.Followdirectionsspecifictotheproductbeingused.
• Headliceproductskillthehead
liceandmanyeggs. **Removenitswithanitcomb
ordragthenitdownthehairshaftwithyourfingernails.Useabrightlightsoyoucanproperlyseethenits.
• Checkforheadlicedaily,
andremoveanynitsthatarepresent.Itisimportantthatyoutakethetimetodothis.Itisrecommendedtoremoveallnitsasheadliceproductsarenot100%effective.
• Onetreatmentmaynotbeenough,andasecond
treatmentmayberequired7-10dayslater.Overuseofproductscanbehazardous.
• Inorderfortreatmenttobefullyeffective,you
mustproperlycleanyourhouse.Thisincludes:
• Washallclothingandpersonalitems(includinghats,scarves,hairbrushes,combs,towels,bedding,stuffedanimals,etc.)inhotsoapywater.
• Vacuumsurfacesthathavecontactwithheads,
forexample:sofas,seatsofcars. • Itemsthatcannotbewashedshouldbe
drycleanedorplacedinanairtightplasticbagfortwoweeks.
• Cleanfrequentlyatthesametimeastreatments.

Youshouldonlyuseheadlicetreatmentproductsifheadlicearepresent.
Thereisnoevidencethatproductssuchasteatreeoiloraromatherapyworktotreatheadlice.

wHaT are Head Lice?Theheadlouseisaninsectthatlivesandbreedsonyourhead.Headlicefeedthemselvesbybitingyourscalpandingestingtheblood.Headlicearecommonandtreatable.Thereisnoreasontopanic.Simplyfollowthestepsoutlinedinthisbrochure.
wHo can GeT Head Lice?Anyone!
Anyonewhocomesindirecthead-to-headcontactwithanindividualwhohasheadlicecangetheadlice.Mostcasesarefoundinchildrenages3-10andtheirfamilies.
siGns and sympToms
• Itchingofthehead,particularlybehindtheears,atthefrontofthescalpandthenapeoftheneck.
• Scabbingonthescalp • Ticklingsensationonthehead,feelsasif
somethingismovingonthescalp.
How can i GeT Head Lice? • Directhead-to-headcontactwithsomeonewho
alreadyhasheadlice. • Head-to-headcontactismostcommonduring
activitiessuchassleepovers,sports,andcamp,etc.
• Sharinghairbrushes,hats, clothing,bedding,stuffed animals,pillowsortowelswith someonewhohasheadlice.
wHaT does Head Lice Look Like? Theinsectsaretiny,wingless,grayishbrownincolor,andmoveveryquickly.TheyCANNOTjumporfly.Therearethreestagesinthelifecycleofheadlice: NITSareheadliceeggs.Theyaredifficulttoseeandcanbeconfusedwithdandruff.Thedifferenceisthatdandruffwillmove,nitswillnot.Theyareovalinshapeandcanvaryincolor(whitetograyishbrown).Theytake7-10daystohatch.
A NYMPH isababylouse.Itlooksthesameasanadultlouse,butsmaller.Theygrowtoadultsinapproximately7days. ADULTliceareaboutthesizeofasesameseed,have6legs,andtheycanvaryincolor(tan,gray,orwhite).Theycanliveonthehumanheadforupto30daysandcanliveonsurfaces(clothing,bedding,furniture)forupto48hours.

yourchildfeelguiltyaboutheadlice.Itcanhappentoanyone.
• Contacttheschool,
daycare,andanyfriendsorfamilywhohavebeeninclosecontact.
• Begintreatmentas
outlined. • Checkallpeoplewithin
thehouseholdandtreatifnecessary.
• Continuetocheck
regularlytoavoidanotheroutbreak.
• Avoidhead-to-head
contact,sharingofhats,scarves,hairbrushesandcombs.
• Putlonghairinbraidsor
ponytails.
