From Bread & Wine to Faith & Giving

A Journey into the Spiritual Discipline of Generosity

Around the Table of Jesus

The gospel s tor ies are about transformation. The work of God at work in the world. The Holy Spirit at work in the followers of Jesus. We celebrate transformation each time we gather around the Lord’s Table. Bread and Wine become for us, in some unique way, the presence of Jesus. We come to the Table wrestling with the complexities of life and leave with the simple assurance of God’s abiding love. The financial gifts we offer and place upon the Table become the resources for ministry and mission.

On November 2, we will begin a four week journey around the Table, considering how we are transformed by our encounter with Jesus in the gifts of bread and wine. We will learn how the stories that focus on the act of sharing at a table with Jesus inspire us to acts of generosity. Every Sunday a story from the life of Jesus will focus our attention on how God is at work in and through us.

On November 23, we will have the opportunity as a community of faith to offer our estimates for the investment we feel led to make for resourcing the things God is calling us to do as God’s church. I hope you will be intentional about not missing a moment of the

rich things God has in store for us at Faith United Methodist Church!

There is another reason to mark November 23 on your calendar as a “don’t miss this day” event -- we will have our traditional all church potluck at 5:30pm in the Koinonia Room. We know you won’t want to miss this annual event as we not only celebrate our commitments to ministry in this community and in he world, but also offer our thanks for the many blessings that God has given to us.

God has done, and continues to do remarkable things with us. Your prayers and your participation are keys to helping us get to the next level of discipleship. We know that when the early church gathered, they did so with glad and generous hearts and that there was no need among them (Acts 2). We desire such a spirit to be among us. I look forward to seeing you around the Table, where each week Bread and Wine become Faith and Giving.

May God bless us during this special time in the life of our church

God bless, Pastor Jody

Everyone should give whatever they have decided in their heart. They shouldn’t give with hesitation or because of pressure. God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:7, CEB)

During the summer of 2010, I struggled with whether or not to leave my job at the City of Mesa and devote 100% of my time to finishing my Masters of Divinity Degree so I could (hopefully) become a full time pastor some day. It was a difficult decision, made even more difficult by the amount I was being compensated for doing my job. That salary, though not huge, was helping us keep a roof over our heads and food on the table. It was helping us put our children (and me!) through school, and it contributed to the lifestyle to which we had become accustomed. Over and over again I wrestled with God about this really big decision in my life. I found myself challenging God, telling God that if God really wanted me to devote 100% of my time to school and ministry, then God would have to provide the means in order to make that happen. But it wasn’t until I figured out that instead of challenging God, I needed to trust that God would provide for our basic needs that I was finally able to take that step. And in October of that year, I took an early retirement…and wouldn’t you know it, everything we needed fell right into place!

This month is Stewardship month at Faith United Methodist Church. It’s the one time of the year that both pastors and churchgoers dread…because it has to do a lot with money. But Stewardship is so much more than that; it’s about trusting God to take care of us when we do our part by giving the necessary resources for God’s church to do God’s work in the world. Jesus taught us all about this in his Sermon on the Mount, when he said:

“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough

food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?

“And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. When we give generously and cheerfully,

our blessings are multiplied. Our gifts are combined so that much can be done, and God is glorified through our giving. But as Paul wrote in his letter to the Corinthians, “Everyone should give whatever they have decided in their heart.” Giving to God’s work through the church is a very personal decision that can and should only be decided after prayerful consideration. Yes, God appreciates a generous and cheerful giver. May we all hear God’s voice, especially in the coming weeks, as we consider how God is asking us to give of ourselves.

Blessings, Pastor Jody

Upcoming Sermons at Faith UMC

From Bread & Wine to Faith & Giving Receiving Holy Communion is at the center of Christian community. When we come to the

table, God uses these elements as visible signs of God’s pure, unbounded love for us. They signify God’s desire for all people to live together in love, peace, justice, and abundance. When we eat the bread and drink from the cup, we embrace God’s unconditional love as the basis for our lives as individuals and communities, and we commit ourselves to live in God’s ways of love.

In this sermon series we will be reminded that God’s table is a Giving Table. God gives to us so that we can give back. We pray you will join us as at God’s table this month. November 2014 - Page 4

During the month of October, our church took the first steps toward identifying our vision for the future through a sermon series called “Casting Our Vision.” First we honored our past by looking back at the founding of Faith Church in the mid-1960s. Several church members, including charter members, shared their memories of days gone by, and we celebrated our legacy as a Servant Church. It was a great way to kick off the process of casting our vision.

The following Sunday we looked toward the future. We envisioned what we want our church to be in 1 year, 5 years, 10 years, and 15 years. Those in worship were asked to share their vision for the future of this church, and the ideas they shared were absolutely fantastic.

In 1 Year, we want our congregation to be larger by 5-15 people, with more families, teens, and children. We want more Adult Studies and Bible Studies to be available, and we want to revitalize our Children’s Choir. We envision hosting more support groups and more Mission and Outreach opportunities, and offering more worship services, including midweek services. And we also want to

enlarge our prayer team, which means on Sunday mornings before worship begins.

In 5 Years, we want to grow our congregation by 20 members, and have more than 100 in worship. We want to expand our Community Garden and revitalize our youth group. And we want to offer even more Bible Studies and Mission opportunities. We see our church growing in many different ways.

In 10 Years, we want to have more diverse worship services, including both contemporary and traditional formats. We see a need for exansion of our facility and renovation of our classrooms. And more people…and more outreach. Although specific goals were not suggested, the emphasis was on continued growth, not only in the people we are bringing into the fold, but the people we are serving as well.

And in 15 Years, we see ourselves as a mother church, birthing a new congregation or starting a satellite church site. We see our membership rolls swelling to 200 members or more, and the average age of our congregation will drop to 50 or less. We will offer even more worship services – three, or four, or more – because we won’t all fit in our current Sanctuary!

Now some may think these visions are

unrealistic, but they’re not. If we all work together, we can turn these visions into reality. It

takes a village to grow a church…and we are that village at Faith United Methodist Church! In the coming weeks and months, you will be hearing more as we

continue Casting our Vision for the future. As our vision statements are finalized, and goals and action steps are cast, we will be asking everyone to do their part to grow this church and make disciples for Jesus Christ. Our vision for the future is bright! May God help us use our time, our talents, and our resources to make that vision a reality!

Postscript

As Pastor at Faith UMC and a Provisional Elder in the United Methodist Church, I’d like to add a couple of thoughts to Howard’s thoughts regarding the issue of marriage equality. First, I’d like to congratulate Howard on his first same-gender wedding. I have no doubt it was a great privilege to officiate a wedding for a couple who had been together for so long. I’m thankful that he was able to help make their dream of marriage come true. What Howard wrote about the content of the Book of Discipline is correct. By Discipline, UMC pastors are not allowed to perform same-gender marriages, nor are any same-gender marriages allowed to be performed on church grounds. However, as you’ve no doubt read in the news, a number of United Methodist pastors around the country have chosen to ignore the Book of Discipline and have lovingly and graciously performed such marriages. Some of these pastors have been brought up on charges, and have even been required to surrender their clergy orders as a result. In the most recent case involving Rev. Frank Schaefer of Lebanon, PA, he was defrocked then subsequently re-frocked on appeal, and just a few days ago the Judicial Council upheld the reinstatement of his clergy orders. Rev. Schaefer has been and is currently serving in Santa Barbara, CA. In light of the recent decision that essentially made same-gender marriage legal in the state of Arizona, some of our Desert Southwest Conference pastors have publicly stated that they will knowingly go against the Book of Discipline and perform same-gender marriages. These clergy do so at the risk of being brought

up on charges, as Howard indicated in his article, and at the risk of losing their clergy orders. Whether or not they are actually defrocked or not is a very complicated process. However, here in the Western Jurisdiction, of which our Conference and our church are a part, marriage equality has already been affirmed. No doubt this will be a significant issue in 2016 when our church’s General Conference will meet again and the possibility of the Book of Discipline being changed is possible.

Pastor Jody

THE PROPHET IN THE CHOIR I have always pondered why God has led

me in other directions than being ordained in the United Methodist Church. Today, I believe God’s reason became clear. I performed my first same-sex marriage ceremony for one of my patients and his partner of twenty-six years. It was a beautiful wedding in their home, and I have never seen my patient happier. If I had been fully ordained in the Desert Southwest Annual Conference, I would not have been permitted to serve this wonderful couple in this particular way. I would have been forbidden by the Discipline to officiate for them. If I had disobeyed, the Bishop would have been in the position of having to take disciplinary action, and those of you who know me realize that would have been a foregone conclusion. It may have also forced other members of the Conference to file charges against me. Again, those charges would probably have been filed. God has guided me into a position that has spared me and my family a great deal of grief. For that I am grateful. I am simply free to serve any couple which comes to me and asks me to marry them.

I must add, however, that I do not agree with the position of the United Methodist Church in the Desert Southwest Conference or General Conference. I believe that when two United Methodist Christians in a committed relationship wish to ask their pastor to marry them, they should not be prevented because they are of the same gender. While they now are able to marry in the geographic area served by the Annual Conference, no local UM Church can support them. Even worse, Jesus never said anything forbidding that affirmation of their love.

WHAT IS STEWARDSHIP? by R.C. Sproul Jun 18, 2014 - reprinted from http://www.ligonier.org/blog/what-stewardship/

We are to give ourselves to God as living sacrifices. This means we are to give our time, our energy, and our very selves to Him as acts of worship and gratitude. But we must always be aware that God has given us these and all things. Biblical giving, therefore, is done in the context of stewardship, our management of the good things the Father showers upon us.

The concept of stewardship begins with creation. Creation is celebrated not only in Genesis but throughout Scripture, especially in the Psalms, where God’s ownership of the universe is declared: “The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein” (Ps. 24:1). God is the author of all things, the Creator of all things, and the owner of all things. Whatever God makes, He owns. What we own, we own as stewards who have been given gifts from God Himself. God has the ultimate ownership of all of our “possessions.” He has loaned these things to us and expects us to manage them in a way that will honor and glorify Him.

The word that is translated “stewardship” in the Bible is the Greek word oikonomia, from which we get our word economy. It is two distinct words joined together to create a new word: oikos, which comes from the Greek word for house, and nomos, the Greek word for law. The word that is translated “stewardship” literally means “house law” or “house rule.”

In the ancient culture, the steward was not the owner of the house. Rather, he was hired by the owner to manage his house affairs. The steward managed the property and was responsible to allocate the resources of the home. It was his job to make sure that the cupboards were filled with food, the money was taken care of, the grounds were tended, and the house was kept in good repair.

Humankind’s stewardship began in the Garden of Eden, where God gave Adam and Eve full dominion over the entire creation. Adam and Eve were not given ownership of the world; rather, they were given the responsibility of

managing it. They were to insure that the garden was tilled and cultivated, and not abused or exploited, and that the goods God provided were neither spoiled nor wasted. So what we are talking about, fundamentally, when we discuss biblical stewardship is responsibility for managing or allocating resources that do not belong to us. They belong, ultimately, to God.

July 27 CHURCH CHARGE CONFERENCE Approximately thirty members gathered in the sanctuary Sunday evening for the annual Church Conference. The Rev. Gary Kennedy, District Superintendent, led us through necessary business and inspired us as he conveyed Bishop Hoshibata’s desire for all to connect with God in their present situation and ask “Lord, what am I to do now?” As people bring their vision back to their church the church can then in turn ask “What does God want us to do now.”

Update on Faith’s North Wing

It’s no secret that there is much work going on in the North Wing. A quick glance across the courtyard as you cross the breezeway makes it

obvious. Jerry Dotto reports that the necessary demolition has pretty much been completed and they will now begin creating the new

space. It is expected that all will be ready for Lura Turner Homes to move in within a few weeks.

RECYCLE PROGRAM PUT ON HOLD

Faith UMC recycling program is being

postponed or stopped effective now until we can re-implement the program. Gary Drown has been the moving force behind the recycling program for many years. He has collected, organized, transported and sold the items individuals brought to the Church. Gary is not able to continue doing this. I want to thank Gary for all the effort and work he has put into the program. The job he did was way above and beyond the basics.

Gary and I have met and discussed the program. We have agreed to postpone the recycling program for now unless someone wants to take the program over. The recyclables already collected will be taken to the recycling center in the near future. As of now, the congregation needs to stop bringing their recyclables to Church and instead recycle the items in their home recycle containers.

If in the future someone would like or is willing to accept responsibility for the program the program can be reorganized. Then emphasis of the program can be changed to meet the needs of the person or persons who would like to take over the program. The bottom line is the program needs someone who sees recycling as a mission.

Once again, thank you Gary, for all your years of dedication and work in implementing a successful recycling program at Faith UMC .

NOTES FROM MARIA Boy oh boy, we sure miss everyone at

Faith!! Fall has arrived indeed!! Hallelujah!! Amy and I have been so giddy lately with all the beautiful fall colors and the much cooler temperatures. We finally bought everyone a pair of snow boots and Diamond and Perla, a pair of snow pants. They look so funny in them because they are swallowed up in winter cloth but I'm sure they will stay warm and dry while playing in the snow. ... Alex started his driving class last week. … We have a new edition to our family. She is 12 weeks old, Black Lab, named Judith. Perla named her after a character in the zombie show, Walking Dead. Her name should be 'NO' or Stop That' instead of Judith since that's we're always saying to her!! Amy and Judith start puppy training class today.

MISSION STATEMENT Faith United Methodist Church Faith United Methodist Church is an

inclusive* Christian congregation dedicated to the care of its constituents in order to serve the local community; and in co-operation with other faith-based organizations, to reach out to all persons* who seek personal acceptance, require sustaining assistance, or yearn for a meaningful life purpose beyond self. *Regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender identity, race, or sexual orientation.

E-GIVING COMES TO FAITH!

In keeping up with the times, Faith United Methodist Church will soon offer several ways for you to give to the church electronically!

One way is by “swiping” your credit or debit card either before, after, or possibly even during the worship service. Using a secure online service called Amazon Local Register, your financial gifts will be automatically credited to the church’s account and also applied to your own giving record. You might want to use this method of giving if you are trying to earn “points” from your credit card account holder, if you forgot your checkbook, and/or you forgot to bring or don’t want to give cash.

Another way we are investigating would allow you to set up your biweekly or monthly giving through Electronic Funds Transfer, or EFT. Using this method, your financial gifts will automatically be credited to the church’s account and deducted from your bank account on the date you specify. Your gifts will also automatically be applied to your giving record.

Both options are safe and secure, and are used by many other churches and non-profit organizations as another option to receiving cash or checks. Please note: we will continue to receive gifts by check and cash. The e-givng options are just additional options for those who want to use them.

When you use e-giving, we all win because your gifts are automatically deposited into the church’s account, and it saves you, our counters, and financial secretary a lot of time and effort. We hope you will prayerfully consider these options as you also consider your financial support of our many valuable ministries at Faith United Methodist Church.

RAMBLINGS FROM THE EDITOR

Did you attend the Church Conference the other Sunday? This was our second church conference at Faith, and I must admit I was impressed. Trying to keep a group of people engaged at 6 in the evening is a challenge, but Gary Kennedy was able to do just that. We covered the necessary items, learned about our Bishop’s vision, and were touched by Gary’s passion for Africa University! And the great dessert prepared by Carol was figuratively and literally the icing on the cake!

Did you get the copy of Faith’s annual report that was distributed at the meeting? Did you read it? Believe it or not, I did. And trust me, if you want to catch up on what is going on here - read the annual report. Do you wonder who is on what committee and what they do? It’s in there. Do you wonder how many members are on the rolls? It’s in there. What have the Trustees been up to and what are their future plans? What does Pastor Jody see in our future? Yup, it’s all there. So, if you haven’t looked it over yet, I think you may want to. If you did not get a copy check with the church office for a copy.

Christmas Food Box Preparation

Dear Members and Friends of Faith United

Methodist Church, This is a reminder that Faith United

Methodist Church is once again asking you to fill a food box, if you can. Faith Church has been providing food boxes to people in need for more than 40 years. With your help, we will be distributing Christmas food boxes in December.

This year there is again a choice on how Church friends and members can help provide a food box to those in need this Christmas. This will allow participation by: Friends and members can donate the money

to Faith Church, and the Church will purchase food for a food box. The average cost is approximately $40 per box. These food boxes will be filled and boxed as a group activity, on Saturday, December 13, 2014. Everyone is welcome to come and help with this activity packing food boxes. Place that date on your calendar. We have some sit down jobs as well as those that require physical activity.

Church members can individually use the Food Box check list to purchase, fill, and deliver their food box to the Church. Church members who are still individually using the Food Box list to purchase food for their food box can return the food boxes to church on December 7, or on December 14, 2014. A sign-up sheet will be set out for those

individuals interested in participating in the group purchase. The sign-up sheets will be

available November 2, 9, and 16, 2014. The cost of a food box is approximately $40.00. That amount includes all the items on the food box list plus a few extra items. Individuals participating in the program may donate what they feel they can afford toward food boxes. Donations are due on or before November 30, 2014. It will allow time to purchase additional food.

Your donation for the food boxes can be done by making out a check to the Church, with a note in the memo section for the money to go for Food Boxes or individuals can pay cash. Checks can be placed directly in the collection plate. Cash should be placed in the stewardship envelopes and noted as for Food boxes on the envelope, and placed in the collection plate. Donations are due on or before November 30, 2014.

The food boxes will be given to Wesley Community Center and to Phoenix Indian Medical Center. Both organizations work year round with families and individuals that need help. We will also provide food boxes to individual or families, if possible, identified through the church. You can also recommend individual families who need our help.

November 16, 2014, food boxes will be set out for individuals who want to do their own shopping to pick up after the church service. Each box will have a list of recommended food to purchase for the box. Please attach this COMPLETED list to the food box indicating what is in the box. It will prevent us from having to go thru your box to determine if it needs additional food.

We will be delivering food boxes to Wesley Community Center and to Phoenix Indian Medical Center about December 17, 2014. If you are interested in helping with the delivery, let me know.

We appreciate your continued support of the Christmas food box mission project.
