The How Hill TearoomThe tearoom is open:

Every weekend from 26th May right through until the 9th of September

Every day during the spring half term holiday (28th May – 1st June)

Every day during the summer holidays (23rd July – 9th September)

We serve a delicious selection of homemade cakes, scones and sandwiches, locally made ice creams and hot and cold drinks. The tearoom is located in the wooden building to the rear of How Hill House, and is signposted from the public car park.

Open GardensThe hidden woodland gardens, known as the ‘secret gardens,’ were established in the early 1920’s by the original owner of How Hill House, Edward Thomas Boardman. The azaleas and rhododendrons are especially spectacular during May and June, and in October the autumn colours can be beautiful. These gardens are open every day and access is signposted via the wood at the rear of How Hill House. A map and guide is available. Entry is free but donations to the How Hill Trust charity are welcome.

The formal gardens surrounding the house are sometimes open. Please check the signs on the gates.

If you would like to learn more about the history of the house and gardens, private tours with the Trust Director and Head Gardener can be arranged.

Opening times: 11am-4pm

How Hill has been providing residential environmental education for school children for over 50 years. Since the centre opened in the mid-1960s, children’s lifestyles have become increasingly sedentary and screen based, with limited time spent outside. We work with children and offer opportunities to explore, understand and enjoy the natural environment of the Broads. These experiences are essential to children’s wellbeing together with inspiring the next generation of conservationists.

As a small independent charity, we have to raise every single penny we spend – we get no statutory funding whatsoever. In recent years it has become evident that money needs to be spent on the fabric of How Hill House to ensure that we can keep providing residential environmental education for years to come. To this end, we are running a 50th anniversary appeal.

Please visit howhilltrust.org.uk/50appeal for details and to donate.

Join the Friends of How Hill The Friends raise valuable funds to support the How Hill Trust by organising events. They are an independent charity with their own committee, AGM and newsletter. New members are always welcome. Membership costs just £10 per year. Please contact Friends Secretary Jeanne Flett on 01692 678560.

The How Hill Trust, situated in the heart of the Norfolk Broads National Park, provides a unique opportunity for children to experience this ecologically important area. We have an incredible site offering a variety of habitats for study, including dry and carr woodland, reedbed and grazing marsh, drainage dykes and windpumps, the river Ant and Cromes Broad.

We have fantastic facilities including our Freshwater Ecology Centre with a studio and laboratory; a beautiful thatched building on our private field for day visits and two boats for visiting Barton Broad, Turf Fen Mill and the marshes.

How Hill has been awarded the ‘Learning Outside the Classroom’ quality badge – which combines learning and safety into an accreditation scheme, making it easier for staff to take students on educational visits.

All our activities are linked to the national curriculum and we can tailor a programme to suit your needs. Our knowledgeable and friendly staff aim to provide an enjoyable educational experience which children will remember forever.
