Problem #1

Some of your fellow school counselors feel that students who request to be in the same lunch period as their friends tend to perform worse academically. You collect the names of all students who make this request and then take an average of their GPAs to determine which group performs better.

ExplanationIn this study students request status (requesting or not) is the independent variable or in other words students request status is independent of GPA because it is not influenced by it. On the contrary it supposedly influences GPA.

Problem #2

You just overheard a discussion among students in which they said that atheists suffer from depression more because they don’t believe in God. You are skeptical of this claim and set out to prove that one’s belief in God is not connected with amount of depression.

You just overheard a discussion among students in which they said that atheists suffer from depression more because they don’t believe in God. You are skeptical of this claim and set out to prove that one’s belief in God is not connected with amount of depression.

Explanation

In this study students’ belief status (believe or not) is the independent variable or in other words belief status is independent of depression. The idea here is that depression supposedly does not cause a belief or lack of belief in God and is therefore independent of it (this could be debated but that is the general idea).

Problem #3

Lately you have had several younger high school students talk to you about having suicidal thoughts. You have a hunch that such thoughts differ across grades (freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors). You also think it is affected by gender.

Lately you have had several younger high school students talk to you about having suicidal thoughts. You have a hunch that such thoughts differ across grades (freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors). You also think it is affected by gender.

Explanation

In this study there are two independent variables: grade level and gender or in other words grade level and gender are independent of suicidal thoughts. The idea here is that suicidal thoughts cannot change or influence your gender nor your grade in school.

Problem #4

It is time for graduating seniors to begin applying for college and you want to know if acceptance rates differ across gender. You compare the average acceptance rates for males and females to see if there is a difference?

Explanation

In this study gender is the independent variable or in other words gender is independent of acceptance rates. The idea here is that acceptance rates cannot change or influence your gender.

Your principal has asked you to determine if the average ACT scores at your school are significantly different than ACT scores nationally. The national average the previous year was 23.2 and your school’s average was 24.6.

Explanation

There is no independent variable in this study. At this point we are not interested in knowing what influences ACT scores (the dependent variable), we just want to compare your sample to the population average ACT scores.

Explanation

The independent variable in this study is time - before and after taking the course. The dependent variable is student growth measured by the test.
