"How many" y "how much" en inglés

Tanto how much como how many se usan para preguntar por cantidades, pero ¿cuándo se usa cada

uno? Veámoslo.

La teoría

Un sustantivo contable es cualquier cosa que se puede contar en unidades separadas: edificios, autos, lunares, botellas, lápices, niños, etc. Con ellos usamos how many: How many cars are there in your garage?

Los sustantivos incontables son los que no podemos contar en unidades individuales: el agua, el aire, la luz, la nieve, la lluvia, el hierro, etc. Con ellos usamos how much: How much water is there in that glass?

La práctica

¿Vamos a ver primero cómo usamos la estructura How many… are there?:

¿Cuántos parques hay en esta ciudad? How many parks are there in this city?

¿Cuántos bancos hay en este pueblo? How many banks are there in this village?

¿Cuántos edificios hay en Medellín? How many skyscrapers are there in Medellín?

Ahora nos fijamos en la estructura How much… is there?.

¿Cuánto crimen hay en Bogotá? How much crime is there in Bogotá?

¿Cuánta polución hay en China? How much pollution is there in China?

¿Cuánta luz solar hay en San Andrés? How much sunlight is there in San Andrés?

Por último, veamos algunos sustantivos que son contables en castellano, pero incontables en inglés:

¿Cuántas noticias hay sobre el nuevo plan? How much news is there about the new plan?

¿Cuánta gente hay en tu familia? How many people are there in your family?

¿Cuántos consejos hay en la carta? How much advice is there in the letter?

Clave de pronunciación

Al decir how ten muchísimo cuidado de no pronunciar /jau/. En inglés, pronunciamos la h como si

estuviéramos echando el aliento a un espejo para abrillantarlo. Piensa en esto mientras dices /hhhau/.

Error común

Aunque en castellano se pregunte ¿Cuánta gente hay?, en inglés no puedes decir nunca How much people is there? porque people es un sustantivo PLURAL. Recuerda: How many people are there?

Consejos de uso how much how many

Se trata de unas partículas usadas habitualmente en modo interrogativo:

How many? – ¿Cuántos/as?

How much? – ¿Cuánto/cuánta?

Aquí te dejamos unos ejemplos:

How many coats do they have in their wardrobe? – ¿Cuántos abrigos tienen en el armario?

El verbo "can" en inglés

El verbo can (poder) es un verbo muy

popular en inglés que se usa a menudo para

hablar de habilidad o permiso. Por lo

general, can se usa como verbo modal, lo

cual significa que siempre se usa junto con un

verbo principal. Sin embargo, can también

puede funcionar como verbo principal cuando

significa enlatar.

El uso de can como verbo modal

Ten en cuenta que can solo se usa en el presente.

Para hablar de permiso o habilidad en otros tiempos

gramaticales, se suele usar be able to.

A diferencia de otros verbos, la conjugación de

los verbos modales (modal verbs) no cambia

según el sujeto (no necesitan s o es en las terceras

personas del presente).

Can para expresar habilidad

Can es un verbo modal que se usa junto con un

verbo principal. Por lo general, se usa cuando uno

quiere hablar de habilidad y es parecido al

verbo poder en español. Si quieres usar la forma

negativa de can, puedes usar cannot o

su contracción can't

. Esta fórmula demuestra cómo usar las formas

afirmativas y negativas:

can, cannot o can't + la forma básica del verbo

principal

Aquí hay algunos ejemplos de su uso:

William can come pick us up at eight.

William puede recogernos a las ocho.

Can you call me when you get home?

¿Puedes llamarme cuando llegues a casa?

I cannot believe that summer is already over!

¡No puedo creer que el verano ya se acabó!

Sarah can't make it to the party tonight.

Sarah no puede llegar a la fiesta esta noche.

Can para hablar de permiso

Además de habilidad, can se usa para hablar de

permiso, aunque la estructura formal para pedir o

dar permiso requiere el uso del verbo modal may

You can ride your bike after you clean your

room.

Puedes andar en bicicleta después de limpiar tu

cuarto.

Can I go to the bathroom?

¿Puedo ir al baño?

Rogelio can bring his girlfriend along.
