Lesson:

Show a picture of the food guide pyramid (enclosed). Ask if anyone knows what this is and what it represents. Talk about how our government has come up with a pyramid to show the proportions of food we should be eating each day. Point out that the healthier foods should be eaten more than the sugars and fats category.

The Lord has told us what is healthy for our bodies to eat and what we shouldn’t. He has even given us some guidelines of how to treat our bodies. It is known as the Word of Wisdom. Read D&C 89 or choose parts of this section to highlight this section. (optional: use attached activity sheet from The Friend)

Read the following to find out how we have the Word of Wisdom:

“How the Word of Wisdom Came to Be” (or read in Doctrine and Covenants Reader chapter 31)

When the church was first started, no one knew about the Word of Wisdom except Heavenly Father. One day Joseph Smith walked into a priesthood meeting where the men were smoking and chewing tobacco. It was hard to breath because of the smoke. When the men spit the tobacco juice, some of it went in the bucket, but some of it splashed on the floor and the wall. Joseph’s wife, Emma, was not happy about having to clean up the mess and talked with Joseph about it. He pondered and prayed about it. His prayer was answered with instructions about how we should take care of our bodies. These instructions are called the Word of Wisdom.

The Word of Wisdom tells us not to drink alcohol or use tobacco. It also tells us not to drink tea or coffee. These things are not good for our bodies. We should eat grain, fruits, vegetables, and a little meat.

Joseph told the members of the church about the Word of Wisdom. They listened to him and soon the Priesthood room was clean. The men took good care of their bodies. If you take good care of your body and follow Heavenly Father’s commandments, the Holy Ghost will be with you and give you comfort, answers, and directions.

1. Cut out pictures of different foods from weekly grocery ad and glue them onto pieces of paper labeled: grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, meat and beans.

2. Circle the healthy foods in the picture enclosed. Taken from Virginia Pearce, “Sharing Time: Joseph Smith Receives a Revelation,” Tambuli, Jun 1992, 6.

3. Choose an outdoor activity to do as a family (i.e. bike ride, walk, jog, run, soccer, volleyball, basketball, kick the ball, crab walk, jump rope, work in garden, etc.)

4. Read the poem, “The Foolish Old Lady.” Use the clock to help tell the time at different parts in the poem. How do you think the foolish lady felt after eating all this food? Was she eating healthy food? Why is healthy food so important for our bodies? Why do you think Heavenly Father gave us the Word of Wisdom?

“The Foolish Old Lady” (use clock enclosed and brass brads to attach hands to face of clock)

Once there lived an old lady,Who was extremely fat and wide;She loved to snack on junk food,And she never walked outside.

Every day she sat and watched TV,And all she did was eat, eat, eat!

At one o’ clock she ate a Big Mac;

At two o’clock she had some Cracker Jacks.At three o’ clock she ate a candy bar;At four o’clock she had cookies from a jar.At five o’ clock she ate some French fries;At six o’ clock she had a lemon meringue pie.At seven o’ clock she ate some potato chips;At eight o’clock she had a bag of peppermint sticks.At nine o’ clock she ate a hot dog on a bun;At ten o’ clock she had cotton candy just for fun.At eleven o’ clock she ate some chocolate cake;At twelve o’ clock she had a stomachache!

Testimony of Word of Wisdom and keeping our bodies healthy.
